Vernon Mount Bridge to open in late Sept 2023

Back in March of 2023, I had a post up about the new bridge over the N40 South Ring Road in Cork City that connects the Tramore Valley Park to the Grange & Frankfield areas. The bridge was lifted in position in April of 2023.

Cllr. Shane O'Callaghan recently submitted a question to the Cork City Council Executive asking about an opening date.

In reply, an opening date for late September 2023 was given.

Once this bridge opens, it will not only up more running routes but it should also help more runners from the Grange & Frankfield areas gain access to the 5k parkruns on Saturday mornings.

Update 8pm: The new bridge will officially be called the Vernon Mount Bridge.

This opening is quite late, now we are on the cusp of November (2023). Very little appears in the way of updates upon searching, since the announcements of a name and an opening estimation of August/September. One would hope this is an exception but I am remineded of the total and extended closure of the Passage Greenway, during the pandemic when it was arguably most needed. That protracted effort was clandestine and covert and obviously done on with inadaquate resources. When the Blackrock site wasn't totally abandoned for months at a time I saw 1 -3 guys with shovels when the site should have been prioritised since it was the final bottleneck of the project.

Since then the second phase of that renovation has gone through the planning stage. I hope the public isn't going to allow such a laissez-faire approach for that. At the very least, instead of closing the entire passage, do one side then the other, thereby allow continued use of an important route.
