In January of 2013, a world class indoor athletics track opened at the Athlone Institute of Technology...see this old post. One of the people behind the project was Cathain O Cathain, president of Athlone IT and former president of Athletics Ireland.
On Wednesday the 26th of February, Pat Kenny of Newstalk Radio interviewed him about the facility in Athlone and how the whole project which was in the region of 11 million Euro was largely self financed.
The 10 minute interview can be heard here...
In other track related news, it was also announced a few weeks ago that work would proceed in mid-2014 on the construction of new indoor facilities at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin. This will also include an indoor athletics track and Athletics Ireland are part of that project. How that impacts on the facility in Athlone when it is finished is another question? Will future indoor championships be held in Abbotstown with the large population on it's doorstep rather than in the midlands?
On a more local level, is it feasible to have a facility like the one in Athlone in or near Cork City?
