While most people know the basic rule that one leg must be in contact with the ground at all times, some of the other rules may not be so clear. The IAAF have produced this simple document which helps explain some of the finer points of race walking.
By the way, the person who helped write it was Jane Saville from Australia. She was leading the 20k walk in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and was disqualified just as she entered the stadium.
