The Olympic Women's Marathon was held on Sunday, the 5th of August and three Irish women took part. The first Irish woman home was Linda Byrne in a time of 2:37:13 in 66th place. Just behind was Ava Hutchinson in 28th place in a time of 2:37:13. Both were very close to the 'A' standard of 2:37 which was used to qualify for the Olympics. The third Irish woman home was Caitriona Jennings who obviously had a tough time with a foot injury finishing well back in last place in a time of 3:22:11.

Irish women finish 66th, 68th and 107th in Olympic Marathon

Given that Catriona admitted on the TV after the race she was injured for the last three weeks shouldn't she really have cried off the team and let the fourth Irish woman, Maria McCambridge (Letterkenny AC) who also achieved the standard for London to run instead? I know it must be an experience to partake in the Olympics and it would be hard to give it up, it being so close.
