Results of the Glen River 5k parkrun - Sat 4th May 2019

There was a modest turnout of 64 runners for this weeks 5k parkrun in the Glen on the north side of Cork City.

After this parkrun started back in November of 2018, it looked as if it might get around 100 runners a week. As can be seen from the chart above, it's down around 60-70 per week at the moment which is a bit suprising considering the number of people living within say a mile of the park.

KEITARO BIDS FAREWELL ... by John Walshe

KEITARO BIDS FAREWELL ... by John Walshe of Ballycotton

Keitaro Ado from Osaka in Japan has been a familiar figure on the Cork running scene for the past three-and-a-half years. Sadly, however, he has to say goodbye as he returns to his native land this coming week.

A participant in events of all distances, he was also a regular at the Ballincollig parkrun every Saturday morning where he had a PB of 21:34. With a beaming smile for all he encountered on his travels, he will be missed by those who got to know him.

At the Midleton race on Thursday night, Keitaro was made a presentation and best wishes were extended to him with the hope that he might return in the future to participate in some of the many races that he enriched by his presence.

Picture show Louise Barry making a presentation to Keitaro along with Midleton club officers Danny McCarthy, Marc Dalton and Gillian Bransfield.

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2019 (Up to May 2019) ...by John Walshe

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2019 (As of 1st May 2019)... by John Walshe

Last year an Irish 10-mile ranking list was compiled for men and women, giving all performances under 55:00 (men) and 65:00 (women). As most of the 10-mile races takes place in the spring months, this year were are publishing an interim list up to the end of April.

Already, the leading marks of Sean Tobin (48:34) and Aoife Cooke (55:17) are faster than last year’s overall times of 48:41 (Kevin Seward) and 56:47 (Laura O’Shaughnessy). In 2018, eight performance under 60:00 were achieved by women which has already been equalled this year. A similar number of men broke 50:00 last year, although only four have done so this spring.

It will be interesting to see if last year’s respective totals under the standards of 55:00 (81) and 65:00 (47) will be surpassed come the end of December.

As usual, any additions or amendments to the published lists can be sent to John Walshe at: jowalshe AT eircom DOT net

The joys of running a marathon dressed as Big Ben

UK elite runner Hayley Carruthers crawls over finish line for 2h 33m time in London Marathon

One of the most memorable sights in the 2019 London Marathon was that of UK elite runner Hayley Carruthers crawling over the line to finish in a time of 2h 33m 59s.

The 26 year old who works in the NHS ran the first half of the race way too fast and had to give everything just to get to the finish line. It was also a three minute PB!

In a post race interview with BBC Radio 1, she said......"We started too fast and I got carried away with the excitement of being in the elite race and all the excitement of London really. We ran the first half far too quickly and it just ended up being a survival fest.

I started counting my steps and my head was gone, I think I lost sight in one eye. My legs felt like lead and I felt sick. It gradually got worse and worse.

To get to 20 miles and think I've still got another 10km to go - I genuinely didn't think I could finish.

It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I just couldn't lift my legs at all and I just couldn't move. It was just petrifying."
