One of the golden rules in athletics is to 'Run through the line', that is, push all the way to the finish line in a race and don't ease up until you cross it.
American athlete Molly Huddle learned that lesson the hard way when she started to celebrate finishing 3rd before she reached the line in the womens 10,000m at the World Championships in China. Her teammate Emily Infeld lunged at the line to finish in front of her.
POS ATHLETE COUNTRY MARK
1 Vivian Jepkemoi CHERUIYOT KEN KEN 31:41.31
2 Gelete BURKA ETH ETH 31:41.77
3 Emily INFELD USA USA 31:43.49
4 Molly HUDDLE USA USA 31:43.58
Prior to this, Huddles best performances were 6th in the 5000m at the World Championships in 2013 and 11th in the 5000m at the 2012 Olympics. The unfortunate thing is that this opportunity to win a major medal like this may never happen again as these races are usually dominated by African athletes.
