Nora Lawton sent on details about this virtual run which aims to raise funds for Marymount Hospice. Anyone can take part and all you need to do is to do a run somewhere during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
If you happen to be taking part in a race that weekend then you can use that as your virtual run if you want to.
Nora writes... "We are organising a fundraising 'virtual' run for Marymount over Easter weekend. It's in memory of my younger brother, Killian. He passed away last July after a short battle with cancer. He was 24.
Tickets are €20 with all proceeds going directly to Marymount.
Tickets are available via: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/virtual-run-walk-hike-in-aid-of-marymount-tickets-268820307777
To date, over 65 people have signed up. We have supporters taking part all over the world – in places like Cork, Dublin, London, Brussels, France, Abu Dhabi, Sydney and Washington DC.
As most people know, Marymount is a charity-based hospice that offers an incredible service to those who need it most. They provide specialist palliative care of the highest quality for those with a life-limiting illness. Marymount needs to raise €3.5 million every year in order to sustain their vital services. The event organisers have seen first-hand the amazing, loving care offered in Marymount and have been inspired to organise this fundraiser in honour of Killian Lawton (RIP 2021), Alice Crowley (RIP 2018), and Michael Clancy (RIP 2020).
Indeed, 2022 will mark the second virtual event we have hosted for Marymount. The first was held during lockdown in November 2020. Over 600 people signed up and we managed to raise a phenomenal €18,000 for Marymount.
This year’s event is dedicated to Killian Lawton, who passed away from cancer in July 2021. Killian was 24 years old. He spent over 3 weeks in Marymount, and it proved to be a home away from home during his final days. No words will ever capture the care administered in this unique hospice.
Killian was an extraordinary person - smart, kind, creative, well-read, and charismatic. He was a beautiful person in a million different ways. Always forward. When we think of Killian before his cancer diagnosis, we think of his vibrancy and energy. A lightness radiated from him. Luckily for us, and despite all the challenges (of which there were many), he held onto this until the very end. Shortly before he passed away, Killian said: "Don't count the days, make the days count". So, join us by making the days count and making a difference.
250km Run for Marymount during January 2021... by David O'Keeffe
For the month of January I will be running a total of 250km, or roughly 8km a day, in support of Marymount Hospice. As some of you will know, the cause has meant a lot to me since my mom passed away two years ago. I will never forget the care Marymount provided, nor the empathy, compassion and kindness shown to my family during the most difficult time of our lives. The hospice has faced significant financial difficulties this year due to the halting of fundraising activities. It is hugely important to me that its vital services not be jeopardised, and that patients and families continue to be supported, as my family was. Any donation, however small, would therefore be very much appreciated!
I'll post updates on my Instagram page, so feel free to follow along @davidok98!

WITH no athletics competitions taking place at present, an unusual initiative for the month of November by the senior members of Midleton Athletic Club has seen Marymount University Hospital & Hospice benefit to the tune of £2,000.
Held over the month of November and called the ‘MOVE-MBER Challenge’, the background of how it came about is explained by club captain, Marc Dalton.
“The club committee held a meeting in late October to come up with a unique plan to get our members out running while stuck in lockdown as because of the restrictions they could not train together or attend training sessions.
"The club always likes to support charities through race takings and always encourages its members to get involved in such campaigns.
“We thought with very little outgoings this year that we would be in a position to help out at least one charity.
"We asked all participants to vote on their chosen charity, and the one chosen by the members was Marymount Hospice.
"It’s very well known and most people in Cork would have some connection to the hospice and the great work they do in providing respite care.”
One thing that every runner talks about is how many miles a week they run, so the challenge was simple – just go out and run as many miles as possible and log it at the end of each week.
As well, weekly tallies were shared on social media platforms to keep all participants motivated throughout.
“The plan was to motivate our runners with a challenge to run a target of 5000 miles for the 30 days of November and we called it MOVE-MBER,” added Marc.
“For the initial goal of every 1000 miles achieved, the club would donate €250 to the chosen charity with the overall target of 5000 miles, if this 5000 target was reached we agreed to allocate a set amount of €2,000.”
