Notice: Run in memory of the late Mary Toher in Carrignavar - Sat 19th Nov 2022

Following the recent passing of Mary Toher, Marathon Club Ireland are organising a run in Carrignavar on Saturday the 19th of November 2022.

While the main event is a full marathon starting at 8:30am, it is open to all runners and walkers.

The course is a one-mile loop and people can run whatever distance they like. There will probably be runners on the course until 1:30pm so anytime in the morning would do.

There will be a bucket for donations and the funds go towards cancer research and the purchase of a special mattress for St Mary's Ward in CUH.

The venue is Colaiste an Chroi Naofa which is just to the east of Carrignavar.

Cork runner Michael Haydon completes his 300th marathon!

Back in June of 2010, I had a post up about Cork runner Michael Haydon and how he had just completed his 100th marathon. That was a time when marathons were far and few between and it took him 11 years to reach the century mark.

Fast forward to the 2018 and Michael has now reached the 300 mark after completing the Cork City marathon!

This year, he ran it in support of the Westgate Foundation, Ballincollig who provide a wide range of important quality services and supports for older people in the community including Day-Care, Sheltered Housing, Meals-on-Wheels, Social, and Active Retired Club, Social Work, Counselling, and Transport.

Michael is shown pictured above wearing the number 300 along with some of the other marathon regulars.

Results of the Marathon Club Ireland Marathon in Cork...Sat 9th May 2015

Marathon Club Ireland organise a number of events throughout the country and have traditionally been in the West of Ireland and in the Midlands. On Saturday the 9th of May 2015, they held one in Cork City near Blackrock Castle.

The marathon route was a 5 mile loop from the Mahon walkway...up the Railway cutting walkway...Marina...Blackroock Castle. This was done just over 5 times to make up the 26.2 mile distance.

Marathon Club Ireland featured on Irish TV

Marathon Club Ireland (MCI) as the name suggest is a club for marathon runners in Ireland. They were established in 2010 and currently have about 200 members from all over the country.

There was a recent 24 minute long feature on Irish TV about the club and a recent marathon held in Westmeath.

Programme description........"This week’s Westmeath County Matters looks at the work of Marathon Club Ireland who recently held an event at Lilliput Adventure Centre outside Mullingar. We chat to the Chairperson and PRO of Marathon Club Ireland about how the club came about; We meet David and Sandra of Team Kerr, whose son is confined to a wheelchair, and they explain how marathons have become a family occasion with the purchase of a very special chair; Several runners aged from 68-78 talk to us about what marathons bring to their lives; and we speak with Eimear Hurley, who was a finalist in RTE’s ‘Fittest Family’, about her experiences in Lilliput."
