Update: 10th April... Course Record Bonus Announced For Ballintotis 4 Mile Race - With just over a week to go to the Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race, the organisers have confirmed that there will be a course record bonus of 250 euro for the first man and lady to break the existing respective records.  

These are 19.11 set by Ryan Creech last year and 21.21 set by his Leevale colleague Lizzy Lee in 2016. Don't forget there are great individual prizes for the first six male and female runners across the line, first to third prizes in all age categories and team prizes (outside of first 6).

The 13th running of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race, hosted by Ballintotis Area Community Council and held in association with East Cork AC, will take place this year on Thursday April 18th (starting time 8pm.)

Up until recently, the middle of April was the start of the Summer season of evening road races in Cork. In this guest post by John Walshe, he looks back at the Castlemartyr 4 mile road race which preceded  the current Ballintotis 4 mile.

Given the glorious weather we’re having of late, no doubt there would have been a huge turnout for this Thursday’s Ballintotis four-mile road race, traditionally the opener to what promised to be another exciting summer of evening events. But alas, for obvious reasons, it is not to be.

Therefore, as we while away these strange times, less us take a look back to the race that preceded Ballintotis which took place in the nearby village of Castlemartyr. On this Blog there is another article [March 2015] on one of those four-milers which was prompted by a photograph discovered by local man Pat Walsh and shows the start of the 1989 event on Castlemartyr’s main street.

That was the fourth year of the race organised by East Cork AC and Castlemartyr in mid-April would herald the start of the spring and summer races for well over two decades. Just 81 runners took part that night, with victory going to Liam O’Brien of the promoting club in 19:25, eight seconds ahead of his team-mate, John Kearney. Eileen Prunty, also East Cork, was first of the women in a time of 23:41.

However, there was a four-mile race in Castlemartyr before East Cork was formed and this was held on three occasions from 1983 to 1985. The first event, on the evening of Friday July 8th, was organised by Imokilly Social Club and sponsored by local firm O.R.M. The winner was Michael Dwyer from Limerick in a time of 19:53. Michael had run in the junior race at the previous year’s World Cross-Country Championships in Rome and at the time of his Castlemartyr victory was working in Shanagarry.

Second that night (20:08) was Denis McCarthy, then of the Youghal club. Later that same evening Denis travelled to Midleton where he took part in the 5000m organised by the East Cork Board, finishing fourth. Dick O’Brien of St Nicholas, who had also run in Castlemartyr, fared better in Midleton when coming second in the 5000m behind club-mate Mike Griffin.

Michael Dwyer had finished 18th in that year’s Ballycotton ‘10’, his time of 52:40 putting him one place and 10 seconds behind Castlemartyr man Pat Whyte, a member of the Midleton club. Pat would go on to run 49:52 for eight position the following year at Ballycotton. No doubt his early morning runs before work around that Castlemartyr circuit – which formed part of his 100 miles a week training schedule – played a major part in his significant improvement.  

Although, as that picture shows, by 1986 the race commenced on the main street those early races had a slightly different start. The route was the same, on to the Ladysbridge road for almost a mile, then a left around Dower before re-joining the main N25 Youghal road just before three miles with the finish on the roadway outside the national school.

Pat Whyte’s brother John, who worked at O.R.M., was involved in those early races and was responsible for the results (below) of the 1984 race which shows 87 finishers, a fine turnout at the time. Two Youghal natives, Martin Drake and Mary Sweeney, took the individual honours with both setting respective course records of 19:40 and 23:49.

A year later just 23 runners took part and so brought the first piece of the Castlemartyr story to an end. With the formation of East Cork AC in that year of 1985, a road race was planned for the following April over the same route and this continued for the next 24 years until Ballintotis came along in 2010. Numbers there continued to increase for the following decade, culminating in last year’s record 1,240 finishers.

And so, along with the 1984 results (below), let us also take a nostalgic look back to the 10th (1995) and 20th (2005) Castlemartyr 4-Mile events and recall those enjoyable races as we scroll through the names of those who participated ‘All in the April Evenings’ going back to a quarter-of-a-century ago.

History of the Castlemartyr 4 mile race...by John Walshe

The Ballintotis 4 mile road race is coming up near the town of Castlemartyr in East Cork on Thursday the 16th of April 2015. More info in this earlier post.

This is a relatively new race which was first run in 2010 and it has its origins in the annual Castlemartyr 4 mile road race which was first held back in 1986.

In the following article, John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions outlines the history of the race which has traditionally marked the start of the summer season of evening road races in Cork.

CASTLEMARTYR ROAD RACE HISTORY...by John Walshe
With the Ballintotis four-mile road race just two weeks away, this might be an opportune time to have a look back at the event which preceded Ballintotis, the Castlemartyr race over the same distance held for the first time on Thursday April 17th, 1986.

The race was organised by the then newly-formed East Cork AC and Castlemartyr in mid-April would herald the start of the spring and summer races for the next 23 years. Numbers taking part over that near quarter-of-a-century show an average of 108 runners per race, a far cry from the 1,000 or so expected this year on April 16th.

The biggest race was the final one in Castlemartyr in 2009 which had 217 finishers. The following year of 2010, East Cork AC – in conjunction with Ballintotis Community Council – moved the short distance to the picturesque lakeside setting. The numbers that year jumped to 435 and the phenomenal increase since can be seen from last year’s total of 996 finishers.

A nostalgic photograph which recently surfaced shows what the start of a typical road race was like 20 to 30 years ago. It is of the fourth Castlemartyr race, held on Thursday April 20th, 1989. The race started on the main street, as can be seen from the old entrance to the Carmelite College (now Castlemartyr Resort) in the background. The route turned right over the bridge on to the Ladysbridge road for almost a mile, then a left around Dower before re-joining the main N25 Youghal road just before three miles with the finish on the roadway outside the national school.

Just 81 runners took part that night, with victory going to Liam O’Brien of the promoting club in 19:25, eight seconds ahead of his team-mate, John Kearney. Tony Ryan from Dungarvan was third in 19:37. It is worth noting that 41 of the 81 finishers broke 24 minutes with only 10 runners slower than eight-minute pace (32:00).

The serious intent of those taking part can be seen from their posture on the starting line, in particular the track stance of Liam O’Brien (fifth from left) who had in the previous five years represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and World T&F Championships in Rome.

The man on the left with the gun held high in the air is the legendary starter Dan McCarthy who will once again be setting a much bigger number on their way in two weeks time.

Along with Liam O’Brien, some of the other runners on the front line include Eric Meade, Tony Ryan, Mary Sheehan, Denis McCarthy, George Walsh, Marion Lyons, Eamonn McEvoy (who, along with Denis McCarthy and John Walshe, ran all 24 Castlemartyr races), John Delaney, Tom Hartnett, Joe Murphy, Michael Roche, Pat Kerrigan, John Kearney, Paul Mulholland, Willie Griffin, Bryan Meade and Tom Owens.

First evening race of the Summer...Ballintotis 4 mile - Thurs 16th April 2015

After a long winter of dark evenings, it's time to look ahead to the upcoming summer season of evening road races. In Cork, the tradition has been that the Ballintotis 4 mile opens the summer season of evening races and the Ballycotton 5 at the end of August brings it to a close.

This year, the Ballintotis 4 mile will be held on Thursday the 16th of April at 8pm. Last year, they  managed to use manual timing to record almost 1000 runners which was an impressive feat considering the distance is only 4 miles and there would be a lot of runners finishing at the same time.

A new development this year is the introduction of chip timing. As a participant, you won't really notice any difference except that your time should be more accurate. If they have a timing mat at the start line then your time doesn't start until you cross it. In previous years, your time was based on when the gun went off but if you were near the back then it could take you a while to cross the start line. It also makes life a lot easier for the organisers behind the scenes.

The countdown is underway to the 2015 Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race which takes place on Thursday April 16th – 8pm. After last year’s very successful event which attracted 996 runners and was won for the fifth year in a row by James McCarthy of East Cork AC, another big entry is expected this time around.

Chip timing at start and finish will be introduced this year and with it comes the opportunity to pre register.  On line entry will be open from Monday March 9th until 12 midnight on Monday April 13th. Thereafter there will still be the opportunity to register at Race HQ in Ballintotis Community Centre. Registration will be open there from 5.30pm to 7pm on the evening prior to the race and again from 1pm onwards on race day Thursday April 16th. Entry fee is 10 euro (plus administration fee if availing of the convenient on line entry) By logging on to www.ballintotis.com from March 9th and following the link to PRECISION TIMING, participants will be able to pre register and also find out the latest pre-race news.

This year’s race will again feature a very generous list of prizes with individual prizes to the top 6 men and women across the line. There also be 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories and a host of spot prizes to be won. Each participant in the race will also receive a souvenir of the occasion.

Both Castlemartyr Resort and Trabolgan Holiday Centre have again confirmed that they will sponsor the top prizes. Launch of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race...

The Ballintotis 4 mile road race is one of the largest evening road races in Cork and always attracts a huge crowd. There was an official launch night for the race last Friday evening when organsiers, sponsors and members of Ballintotis Fit4Life came together at the local community hall.

The race is coming up on Wednesday the 16th of April 2014 at 8pm. More details in this earlier post.

Race notice...Ballintotis 4 mile road race - Thurs 18th Apr 2013

After a long dark winter, the summer road racing season kicks off on the 18th of April with the Ballintotis 4 mile road race in East Cork. Located just to the west of Castlemartyr, it always attracts a huge crowd. In 2012, they got over 700 runners and I'm sure that the organisers will be hoping for another bumper crowd this year again.

With just 5 weeks to go preparations are continuing at pace in Ballintotis as the local community looks forward to welcoming the running fraternity to their 4 Mile Race on Thursday April 18th

There should be a great buzz of activity in the area as the local Community Council Race Committee have again joined forces with East Cork AC and Ballycotton Running Promotions to host what promises to be a memorable sporting and social occasion.

In the heart of this vibrant community there are now 3 major focal points - St Colman’s Church, the local National School and of course the new Community Centre. Regular visitors to Ballintotis over the past few years have seen the development of the new Centre.  All monies raised from the race have initially gone towards it’s construction and from now on will go towards enhancing it’s facilities and offsetting running costs.

The race setting is surely one of the most charming on the busy Cork circuit. It’s start and finish line border scenic Loughaderra Lake with the final mile of the course skirting this well known beauty spot. Participants should note that again this year early entries will be taken from 1pm on race day inside the Community Centre and this area will also be the venue for post race refreshments and prize giving.  Top prize on the night for both the first man and first lady across the line is a three night extended weekend break at Trabolgan Holiday Centre, whilst there are also some excellent runners up, placed and category prizes to be won.

Entry fee for the race is 10 euro and all taking part will receive a souvenir t shirt to mark their visit to Ballintotis.  There will also be plenty of spot prizes to be won on the night.

Incidentally, a new Fit4Life Club has also recently sprung up in the Ballintotis area with the moving of the race from nearby Castlemartyr in 2010 generating a huge interest in running amongst the locals. The new club members will officially launch this year’s race on Wednesday evening March 20th.

So, there is still time to get into training for the big race, get on those running shoes and enjoy the 2013 Ballintotis ‘4’ Miler on Thursday April 18th. Results of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race...Thurs 19th Apr 2012

The 2012 Ballintotis 4 mile road race in East Cork attracted a huge field of 737 runners this year, an increase of 32% on the figure for 2011. It's a remarkable figure for what was the first evening road race of the summer season.

The mens race was won by James McCarthy of East Cork AC in a time of 19:56, well ahead of Chris Harrington (20:43) and John Shine (20:52) of Leevale AC. The womens race was a much closer affair with the first three women finishing within ten seconds of each other. Sinead Ní Chonchuir of Eagle AC won in a time of  23:41, seven seconds ahead of Martina Kiely of St.Finbarr's AC in 23:48. Just three seconds behind in third place was Annmarie Holland of Eagle AC in 23:51.

Preview of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race - Thurs 19th Apr 2012

After a long dark winter, the first road race of the Summer Season starts in Ballintotis near Castlemartyr in East Cork on Thursday, the 19th of April at 8pm. This 4 mile road race is sure to attract a huge crowd so give yourself plenty of time for parking, queues for entry and then get to the start.

Location..... Ballintotis is just off the main N25 Cork to Waterford road. It is located just a few kms west of Castlemartyr. If you are coming from Cork City then look for the turn off right about 5 kms after Midleton. There is a green signpost showing that the turn off is coming up. If you are coming from the easterly side then drive through Castlemartyr and take the first left after Lough Aderra which you can't miss.

The entry fee is €10 and a T-shirt is included in that price.

Info from the organisers.....Ballintotis will again host the opening evening fixture on the extremely busy Cork road running calendar on Thursday April 19th. Two years ago, the inaugural ‘4’ miler at the picturesque venue, located just off the Main N25 road between Midleton and Castlemartyr, proved an outstanding success with nearly 450 runners taking part. Twelve months on over 550 went to the start line, whilst another sizeable contingent took part in the non competitive walk.

This year’s race was officially launched by the Lakeside at Loughaderra with Donal O’Sullivan, General Manager of Trabolgan Holiday Village, joining local organisers to kick start the countdown to an occasion that will again see all proceeds going towards the Ballintotis Area Community Council Building Fund.

East Cork AC who previously held the fixture in nearby Castlemartyr are again to the fore in the organisation and promotion of the race as are members of the highly respected Ballycotton Running Promotions team. Without the tremendous help and co-operation of both the aforementioned the race would not be possible to stage.

Currently the main objective of the Ballintotis Community Council Committee is to provide a suitable multi purpose floor on the splendid new Community Centre which is located adjacent to the Church grounds. Since last year’s race tremendous progress has been made as reflected by the fact that the Centre will be HQ for the big April 19th fixture. The staging of the race at the venue over the past 2 years has generated a vital part of the funding which has seen such major work already completed.

So this year (weather permitting) the focus will both be on the new construction and the Car Park of St Colman’s Church which will again be the venue for after race refreshments on the lake side at Loughaderra. The start line is approximately 200 meters from the race base and the course will see the runners pass the Car Park as they set out on what is predominantly a fast flat course along quiet country roads, before finishing back in front of the Church.

Entry fee for the event is €10, with all finishers receiving a souvenir tee shirt. There is a wide range of prizes in all categories along with a plentiful supply of spot prizes. For those who make the headlines up front some attractive prizes are on offer topped by a family weekend break at Trabolgan Holiday Village for both first man and first lady across the line. Incidentally, James McCarthy of East Cork AC won the event in both 2010 and 2011 while Rhona Lynch and Niamh Roe of Eagle AC won the women's race in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Race time on Thursday 19th is 8pm with all participants urged to arrive early and follow the advice of the stewards in relation to parking..

Meantime a non competitive walk will also be held beginning at 6.30pm over the same course. Again entry fee for adults is €10 which automatically entitles the participants to the aforementioned commemorative tee shirt.

Children accompanied by an adult can partake free of charge.

Entry to both the race and walk, changing facilities, refreshments and prize giving will all be centred in close proximity.

Course.....
Basically, it is a loop course with the start and finish area overlapping by about 200 metres. The start line is very close to the church and right next to the lake...

The start is on the approach road to Ballintotis from the main road to the north. As you pass the church, the road opens up...

and then you turn right at the next junction. This is where the only real hill of the race starts...

Coming so early in the race, it's a pretty minor affair. Around the half-mile mark, you pass the 16th century  Ballintotis Castle...

 and then you are onto the quiet country roads in the area. The photo below shows what you can expect....

.......narrow quiet country roads with a hedgerow on either side.

At around 3.5 miles, you come back onto the hard shoulder of the M25 road as you pass Lough Aderra....

Then it's next left, back onto the narrow road again and on to finish just outside the church.

Overall.....a 4 mile road race on a relatively flat circuit on nice quite country roads. No real hills to speak of so you can expect to get a fast time. The only issue might be that the start is narrow but it's no worse than say the likes of Ballyandreen. A nice race to kick off the summer season of evening races.

2012 Ballintotis ‘4’ Mile Road Race Thursday April 19th - 8pm
CAR PARK ‘A’
This is located adjacent to ‘Ballintotis Community Centre which is the Race H.Q. The car park will cater for walkers, early arrivals for the race, stewards and other race officials. It was also used for last year’s race. (Please note use of this car park is dependent on favourable conditions)
CAR PARK ‘B’ This is located approx 0.5 miles from Race HQ and is the situated beyond the school and close to Balllintotis Castle. It will cater for runners arriving from 6.30pm onwards. *After the race traffic heading in a westerly direction towards Midleton from this car park will be directed left on the road known as the Kiln Boreen.
CAR PARK ‘C’ This is located at the eastern side of Loughaderra Lake and will initially be for all race traffic approaching from Castlemartyr and Youghal direction. It will be also be for use by runners arriving later from any direction. The car park is just under 0.5 miles from Race HQ.

Other Notes
**After 7.30pm it is important to note that access to all car parks will be via the road on the Castlemartyr side immediately east of Loughaderra Lake.
*Also note that the field used as a car park on N25/Church Cross Junction last year is not available this year.
*A temporary lighting system is also being erected to assist participants on their return journey to each car park.
*Weather permitting refreshments will be served and prizes will be presented in the Church Car Park adjacent to Loughaderra Lake. In the event of rain these will take place in the Community Centre.

Note To All Participants
The organising committee has decided to open an entry desk from 1pm at the newly built Ballintotis Community Centre. Whilst this might seem a very early hour, we feel it could facilitate a number of people who commute regularly on the N25 Cork/Waterford road. It will also of course be an advantage to local people living in the vicinity of the race.
Overall we urge runners to arrive early and please follow the advice of stewards and members of the gardai. Hopefully with a bit of luck weather wise, we will all have another enjoyable evening in Ballintotis.

The first evening race of the season starts in Ballintotis near Castlemartyr in East Cork on Thursday, the 19th of April at 8pm. This race has grown in popularity and is considered by many to be the first race of the 'summer'.

It’s all systems go for the opening evening road fixture in Cork -  the Ballintotis ‘4’ Mile Road Race which takes place on Thursday evening April 19th – 8pm. This will be  the third year of the race at this venue and once more Trabolgan Holiday Village have given the event a major boost by sponsoring the top prizes.

This year the race winner and the first lady home will both receive a 3 night weekend break at the famous East Cork holiday venue.  Furthermore there is an attractive runners up prize of a family day package pass to the venue.  The Ballintotis committee will offer a full range of prizes in all age categories together with a free t shirt to all participants.  The race is being held in conjunction with East Cork AC and with the help of Ballycotton Running Promotions.

Donal O’Sullivan, General Manager of Trabolgan Holiday Centre was in Ballintotis recently to confirm his company’s involvement in a race that last year attracted over 550 participants to the picturesque East Cork venue.  Expectation is that another very large gathering will be present this year to run on what is a fast course over country roads.

Race HQ this time around will be the newly built Ballintotis Community Centre.  Thanks to the injection of funds following last year’s race and several other fund raising activities, construction work began last summer and as planned the doors were opened before Christmas.  Now it’s a case of maintaining the cash flow to help finance the work completed and weekly running costs of the new centre and with this in mind the race continues to be a major contributory factor.

Entries will be taken at the new venue but weather permitting the intention is to again to serve refreshments in the open air adjacent to Loughaderra Lake.

Article on the Upcoming Castlemartyr 4 mile road race by John Cashman...
Now that the clocks have changed, it will soon be bright enough for an evening road race. For most runners locally in Cork, the Castlemartyr 4 Mile road race is always seen as the first evening event of the summer season.

The race is coming up in 2 weeks time on Thursday, the 22nd of April. This year, there is a change in the course as the event moves a few kms to the south-west to the East Cork village of Ballintotis. With that in mind, John Cashman of Midleton AC has written an article which appeared in last Saturday's Evening Echo and is re-produced here with his permission.

The first evening road race of the 2010 Cork running season will bring a new venue into the spotlight.  East Cork AC has joined forces with Ballintotis Community Council to promote the ‘4’ mile event formerly held in Castlemartyr.  


A move of just a few miles west will see Ballintotis host the race for the very first time with a fast course lined up for competitors on Thursday April 22 (8pm start) 


Headquarters for the event will be the Church Car Park in Ballintotis which is located beside picturesque Loughaderra Lake, just off the main N25 Road between Castlemartyr and Midleton. 
In the heart of this vibrant community the two main focal points are St Colman’s Church and the local National School.  But now the ambitious Ballintotis Area Community Council members are undertaking the task of building a Community Centre and the upcoming race is just one of many planned fund raising ventures. 


The fixture, which has been held in Castlemartyr in mid April over the last few decades will take on something of a new look at it’s new venue. 


 For starters the setting promises to be one of the most charming on the busy Cork circuit.  St Colman’s Car Park will be transformed with the erection of marquee for changing on the shores of Loughaderra Lake and competitors will be chasing a top prize of a mountain bicycle for first man and first lady across the line (both kindly sponsored by Trabolgan Holiday Village). 


Registration, tasty refreshments and the prize giving ceremony will all be centred at the one venue in the Car Park, whilst a large team of stewards are lined up to ensure the smooth running of  a race that is expected to produce some fast times. 


The course will predominantly take the participants over scenic country roads with the final section skirting Loughaderra Lake as the competitors run beside this well know beauty spot on the Main Road before finishing just in front of the Church. 


Entry fee for the race is 10 euro and all taking part will receive a souvenir cap to mark the first road race in Ballintotis.  There will also be plenty of spot prizes to be won on the night. 


East Cork AC have also introduced a new pre registration option for the race.  Runners may register in advance by e mailing obrienlm@eircom.net  and then pay their entry fee when arriving on the evening. Ballycotton Running Promotions have also kindly come on board to lend their expertise and support to the race. 


Last year Sean McGrath (20:29) led home a field of 217 runners  in Castlemartyr and the organisers of the new 2010 version of the race hope to build further on that figure. Former Cork City Marathon winner Roy Fahy was second with Con Marshall of St Finbarr’s next home.  Rhona Lynch of Eagle AC was the impressive leading lady in 23:24.


All proceeds this year from what promises to be a great sporting and social occasion will go directly towards the Community Centre Building Fund in Ballintotis. 


This race is just one of the many attractive fixtures in the east of the county over the summer months with the Midleton AC Joe Hourigan Memorial ‘5’ also on the agenda on Thursday May 6 and the Ballycotton 5 Mile Summer Series due to commence in Ballyandreen on Thursday May 27.

Results of the Castlemartyr 4 Mile road race - Thurs 16th Apr 2009

The first evening race of the year took place in more or less perfect conditions. The strong easterly wind that was there earlier in the day had largely died away leaving just a gentle breeze by the start at 8pm(.....or 8:10pm as was the case ;o). A total of 218 runners took part, an increase of about 60 on last year's figure of 156. Perhaps we are in for another summer of record numbers at the evening races? If there are over 200 runners at this stage, how many will turn out for the Cork BHAA races or the Ballycotton Summer Series?

Warm up / Warm down........Just a note for the future. Warming down afer the race last night in the fading light, it was obvious it was no longer safe to run out back along the course. So for the first time, I tried the road north of Castlemartyr. It turns out that it's quiet and has a good footpath for about 2 kms as far as Mogeely. It's a lot safer to warm down on, even when it's pretty dark (9:15pm ;o)

24th Annual Castlemartyr '4' Road Race

Preview of the Castlemartyr 4 mile road race - Thurs 16th Apr (8pm)
This race, the first evening road race on the calendar, always marks for me the start of the Summer. The temperatures might still be a bit on the nippy side but the evenings are really beginning to stretch out.

Registration...
If you have never done this race before, the thing to remember is that everything is centered around the main crossroads in the middle of the town of Castlemartyr in East Cork. To register, you need to go to the school which is about 50 metres away from this major junction (...marked as an X above). There is a limited amount of parking in the schools grounds.

Course...
It's a reasonably fast course so you should expect to get a reasonable time. The start is just North of the crossroads. Once the race begins, they hold the traffic on the main N25 road as we cross this very busy junction and head South towards Ladysbridge. We don't quiet make that village however as we take the first left onto a quiet country road. The running is easy along this section until just after the 2 mile mark when there is a short sharp climb followed by an equally short and sharp decent down to the road junction with the busy N25 road. From here, we run inside the wide hard shoulder all the ways into Castlemartyr.
Just one thing...the finish. You have to remember that it is NOT at the school. You have to go as far as that busy crossroads, take a left and the finish is just there.

Overall...
This race usually seems to get a big crowd. It's almost like a bit of a tradition at this stage...doing the first evening road race every year. But with an 8pm start, you'll see that they are just able to squeeze it in. By the time the last runners are finishing or you finish your warm down, the light will be rapidly vanishing.

A total of 156 runners turned out for this 4 mile race, the first evening race since the clocks changed a few weeks ago. Conditions were more or less ideal although there was a cold Easterly breeze for the first 2 miles or so.

23rd Annual 4-Mile Road Race

Just a few video clips from last year. The first 2 are very short. The 3rd one shows Gerry Forde starting and the last one, which is the longest, shows the start of the race.

Preview of the Castlemartyr 4 mile road race - Thurs 17th Apr (8pm)

This race, the first evening road race on the calendar, always marks for me the start of the Summer. The temperatures might still be a bit on the nippy side but the evenings are really beginning to stretch out.

Registration...

If you have never done this race before, the thing to remember is that everything is centered around the main crossroads in the middle of the town of Castlemartyr in East Cork. To register, you need to go to the school which is about 50 metres away from this major junction (...marked as an X above). There is a limited amount of parking in the schools grounds.

Course...

It's a reasonably fast course so you should expect to get a reasonable time. The start is just North of the crossroads. Once the race begins, they hold the traffic on the main N25 road as we cross this very busy junction and head South towards Ladysbridge. We don't quiet make that village however as we take the first left onto a quiet country road. The running is easy along this section until just after the 2 mile mark when there is a short sharp climb followed by an equally short and sharp decent down to the road junction with the busy N25 road. From here, we run inside the wide hard shoulder all the ways into Castlemartyr.

Just one thing...the finish. You have to remember that it is NOT at the school. You have to go as far as that busy crossroads, take a left and the finish is just there.

Overall...

This race usually seems to get a big crowd. It's almost like a bit of a tradition at this stage...doing the first evening road race every year. But with an 8pm start, you'll see that they are just able to squeeze it in. By the time the last runners are finishing or you finish your warm down, the light will be rapidly vanishing.
