Cork runner Niamh Allen wins National 10k Championships in Co Meath - 23rd March 2025

The Dunboyne 10k road race was held on Sunday 23rd March 2025 and it also doubled up as the National 10k road race championship.

Cork runner Niamh Allen of Leevale AC won the women's title in a time of 31m 44s.

2 Annmarie MCGLYNN 33:07 508 F FS NAT FS Letterkenny A.C.
3 Ide NIC DHOMHNAILL 33:17 2 F FS NAT FS West Limerick A.C.

Niamh's time of 31:44 was also the fastest 10k time on Irish soil and only Sonia O’Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan have run faster times.

Dunboyne AC write... "The women’s race saw Niamh Allen of Leevale AC take first place (31.44), running the fastest 10k on Irish soil, and third fastest overall (Sonia O’Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan hold first and second record, but ran their races abroad). Niamh was followed in second place by Annmarie McGlynn of Letterkenny AC (33:07) and in third place was Ide Nic Domhnaill of West limerick AC (33:15)."

Leevale AC was also the first women's team.

Results of the 5k parkruns around the county on Saturday 22nd Mar 2025. Approximately 1151 runners and walkers took part in the 10 events in Co Cork.

Report... With the winds swinging around to a more northerly direction, conditions were a lot cooler for this weeks eleven 5k parkruns in Co Cork. Even though the temperature was around 8 deg C, the wind made it feel a good bit cooler.

This seems to have deterred a few with a drop in numbers this week but still over the 1000 mark fo Co Cork.

Overall results of the Cloyne Commons 4k Series - Nov 2024 to Mar 2025

The 16th of March marked the end of another successful Cloyne Commons 4K Series which started back in November of 2024. 

The average numbers per race was 280 with a high of 336 in the November edition and a low of 147 in February when the weather was awful.

164 runners completed 4 out of the 5 events to reach the level to get the series dry fit top while 36 did all 5 events.

Athletics Ireland are holding a Level 2 Coaching Course at MTU in Cork over three weeks. This is aimed at Level 1 coaches who want to specialise in a particular field.

The courses for the various disciplines will be held over several weekend...

Weekend 1 - March 22nd & 23rd 
Weekend 2 - April 19th & 20th 
Weekend 3 - May 10th & 11th  
9:00am - 5pm all days

The Level 2 courses are normally held in Athlone so this is a good opportunity for any coach who wants to upskill their coaching badge.

Results of the Crosshaven 10k & 5k - Sun 9th March 2025

After a break of several years, the Crosshaven 10k road race made a return this year on Sunday the 9th of March 2025. While the numbers weren't as good as the last edition in 2020, they were very similar to the 2019 event.

The race was held on the same day as the Midleton 10-mile, the BHAA cross country and Banteer 5-mile so it perhaps suggests that having a race locally is a very consideration for a lot of runners when deciding whether to take part in an event or not.

Clashduv Junior parkrun restarts 23rd March 2025

Back in February, the team behind the Clashduv junior parkrun  in Togher announced that their event was cancelled until further notice.

The good news is that it is expected to restart on Sunday 23rd March 2025!

Report... With the blue skies and sunshine, there was a definite jump in numbers for the 5k parkruns in Co Cork this weekend,

Clonakilty... There was parkrun in Clon on the 15th of March. They'll be back on the 22nd.

Glen River... The Glen River parkrun celebrated it's 250th edition this weekend!

It's the only 5k parkrun on the north side of Cork City and it started on the 24th of Nov 2018.

At the same event, Oonagh Goggin completed her 100th 5k parkrun!

Ballincollig... There were a lot of milestones reached the Ballincollig 5k parkrun this weekend. Paula Lees and Jim Costello reached 100 parkruns! Pat Twomey, Siobhan Collins and Michael Brennan reach 200! And finally Liz O'Donovan and Donal Fennessy reach 250!

Notice: Cork BHAA Stryker 4 mile race in Carrigtwohill - Wed 30th Apr 2025

This 4 mile race in Carrigtwohill in East Cork is coming up on Wednesday the 30th of April at 7:30pm. This is a change from the last few years when it was held in August and it is now reverting back to its more traditional April date.

As with all Cork BHAA events, the entry fee is €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-registered.

Located just a few minutes drive from the Jack Lynch tunnel, this one is very close to Cork City and is easy to get to.

The race HQ is the local community centre and the race route takes in a loop to the north of Carrigtwohill. Note that the start line is a few hundred metres away so allow plenty of time to get there.

The course is the same as last year. The race will take a left at the local Aldi and then make use of the new roads that pass by the new apartment block and schools. This is a reasonably quiet section and the wide roads will allow the field to thin out nicely in the first mile.

As BHAA races go, this one is noted for having some pretty good prizes and of course, there are loads on offer with the various categories and teams.

As in previous years, the organisers are holding raising funds for the Children's Units in both the CUH in Cork and the UHL in Limerick.

BBC piece about the 'ultramarathon business'

The Business Daily radio programme on the BBC World Service recently carried a piece titled 'The ultramarathon business - How extreme running events became a big money-spinner.'.

In the last decade or so, doing long distance events that are well beyond the usual marathon distance of 26.2 miles / 42.2 kms have become hugely popular as runners seek new challenges.

Notice: Cork BHAA PwC Anthony Reidy Memorial 5k in Cork City - Wed 9th Apr 2025

The Cork BHAA PwC 5k in Cork City is coming up on Wednesday the 9th of April 2025 at 7:30pm.

This is always a very popular race and should get a good crowd again as it's centrally located in the heart of Cork City and about as flat a 5k course as you can get. It's also the first evening race of 2025 in Cork!

First off, the race HQ is the PwC building at One Albert Quay. You can enter there on the evening of the race from 6pm. As always, it's €5 for registered BHAA runners and €10 for non-registered.

This is located just east of Cork City Hall and about 600m from the start line.

Anthony Reidy was an Assurance partner in PwC’s Cork office. He sadly passed away in July 2021. He was much beloved, well respected and well known amongst his colleagues, clients and around Cork. We are holding this race to commemorate him.

Course... This is the route for 2025 subject to any ongoing roadworks. It goes down Monahan road, does a loop near SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh and then back via Centre Park Road.

The main thing to remember is that the start and finish lines are near Kennedy Park and about 600m from the race HQ at One Albert Quay. 

As per usual, there will be refreshments post race in One Albert Quay, which is where the BHAA prize-giving will happen.

Results & Photos of the Midleton Greenway 10-mile race - Sun 9th March 2025

It was anyone's race at the halfway mark in the augural Midleton Greenway 10-mile but Michael Harty (130) would go on to take the win.

You couldn't have asked for nicer conditions for the inaugural Midleton Greenway 10-mile race with mild conditions and hazy sunshine. The light easterly breeze was a bonus on the return leg from Mogeely back to Midleton.

A total of 540 runners took part which is good for the first outing. Proceeds  from this event go towards a project to establish a new athletics track for the east Cork region so this event should be a regular on the calendar.

Results of the Cork BHAA ESB Cross Country 5k - Sun 9th Jan 2025

The rescheduled Cork BHAA ESB Cross Country 5k was held in Beaumont Park on Sun 9th March 2025 with 106 finishers. This is well down on 180 that they got last year and might be the lowest ever for this particular event.

It's usually held at the start of January but this year, it looks as if it got squeezed by the Midleton 10-mile and the 5-miler in Banteer.
