It seems as if work on the new Tinkers Cross Park has commenced in Mayfield. It was announced some time ago that a grant of €100,000 was made available for this project and it will be a new park for the north side of Cork City.
The location of the new park is shown on the map below and as can be seen, it is just off the North Rung Road in Mayfield.
The perimeter of the park is about 580 metres but it may be more once fully developed.
Junior parkrun??? ...This raises the question if this would be a suitable location for a 2km junior parkrun for 4-14 year olds?
One of the criteria for a junior parkrun is that all participants must be within sight of a marshal at all times. While there is a successful 5k parkrun nearby in the Glen, there are too many twists and turns for a junior parkrun.
Wide open grassland parks like in Ballincollig are ideal for a junior parkrun. For the Tinkers Cross Park, it would seem as if at least 4 laps would be required. Maybe with additional paths, this might be reduced to 3 laps so it would seem like it might be possible.
For a junior parkrun to be viable, the demand has to be there from the community. It needs a core group of local volunteers who would like to see it happen and to keep it going.
Adults... As for adults, this will be a welcome new place for people to walk and do short runs.
As for a completion date, I'd presume something like the end of 2025 might be possible.
