The organisers of the Dingle Adventure Race have recently announced that they won't be holding an event in 2025. This event which involves running, cycling and kayaking has been a popular event in Co Kerry over the last decade.
From the organisers... "The next DAR will take place on 6th June 2026. After 15 years of running DAR we have taken the decision to have a break for 2025. We hope this will help boost numbers for the future as 2024 saw a dramatic decrease in numbers. The number of other events taking place during the year is ever increasing and this year another outdoor event took place in Kerry on the same day as DAR. Every year DAR calls on around 90 paid marshals to take time out of their busy lives, with some being involved for 2-3 days for the event (massive thanks to all of them over the years). This will give our valued marshals a much deserved break for 2025. We will transfer winners free entries from 2024 to the 2026 event and any deferred entries for 2025 will be moved to 2026. We have taken a few months to take this decision and we hope DAR will come back stronger in 2026 with the support of past and new competitors. We will open entries for DAR 2026 early next year to give competitors time to plan and train and to book accommodation. If any accommodation has been booked for 2025 already, please contact the accommodation providers and request for the booking to be transferred to 2026. The course options for 2026 will remain the same: Mini, Sport and Full. For now stay active, fit and healthy and we look forward to seeing you all for DAR 2026. Noel and DAR team."
I had a look at the results and the event is split up into the FULL, SPORT and MINI events. The overall number of finishers can be seen in the chart below...
As you can see, the numbers have been dropping for some time. While the numbers still seem high, I'd imagine there are substantial costs putting on an event like this with three disciplines, the equipment and the transition areas. It's certainly a lot more complicated than say a half-marathon.
