Cork Firefighter Alex O'Shea sets new world record in Cork Marathon
Cork firefighter Alex O’Shea set a new world today when he completed the 2014 Cork City Marathon in full firefighting attire in a time of 3h 41m 10s. As you can see from the photo above, this included steel-toed reinforced firefighting boots, fire-retardant pants and jacket, as well as his 3lb firefighters helmet and visor.
The previous record was 4h 39m 13s which was set in the London Marathon last April.
3:41 is a remarkable time even for someone just wearing the boots alone let alone wearing all of the fire gear as well. It work out as 8:26 per mile pace.
Alex O'Shea was running this in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and BEDA Ballineen Enniskeane playground development fund. If people would like to make a donation then his website is http://greatfirerun.com/
