Notice - Clonmel Half-Marathon, Tipperary ... Sun 26th Aug 2018

Update 3rd of Aug : There are now fewer than 100 places left for this half-marathon in Clonmel

The Clonmel Half-Marathon is coming up on Sunday the 26th of August 2018 and there is an entry limit this year of 1,000 runners. Since it first started back in 2010, it has grown in popularity every year and if you are interested then you should enter as soon as possible.

This one is always popular with runners from Cork and is just a few miles off the M8 motorway.

The standard entry fee is €35 and that includes a dry fit top.

Upcoming race...Ballynonty 10 mile road race - Sun 30th July 2017

Even though this is a low key event, it's one of the best on the race calendar. It might be best described as a traditional old fashioned 10 mile road race. No medals, no dry fit tops, no chip timing, no razzmatazz. Just a good honest 10 mile road race for €10 with a fine spread afterwards.

Located just a few miles east of the Horse & Jockey in the centre of Tipperary, it's pretty close to the M8 motorway.

New 5k parkruns starting soon in Listowel and Clonmel

As can be seen from the map above, there are quite a number of 5k parkruns in Munster and soon, there will be two more.

On Saturday the 22nd of April 2017, a new 5k parkrun will be starting in Listowel in Co.Kerry. It will be held in Listowel Town Park and it will be on a tarmac surface.

Listowel has a population of about 5,000 people so there are probably enough runners locally to support a parkrun here. The numbers will probably be pretty small though. Newcastle West in Co.Limerick is about 20 miles away and has a similar population. The parkrun there gets an average of 19 runners per week.

On Saturday the 20th of May 2017, there is a new 5k parkrun starting in Clonmel, Co.Tipperary. This one will be at Powerstown Racecourse which is at the northern edge of the town.

This one is different from Listowel in that the population of Clonmel is close to 16,000 people so numbers won't be an issue. The big question here is what impact it will have on the local road races? Clonmel Athletic Club have been organising local road races for years and host a very successful 4k and 6k series. While the entry fee is usually only €5, a free local 5k parkrun every Saturday morning could be an issue.

Both parkruns will have start times of 9:30am and are of course free.

Slowly but surely, new parkruns are popping up every year. In Cork, there is still no sign of Tramore Valley Park in Cork City opening up. As for other locations in Cork, Doneraile Park in North Cork is an obvious venue but this is being used by many clubs, schools and charities at present for fundraising. A free 5k parkrun there would have a big impact.

As most of you know, there is no shortage of events on the calendar at the moment and at times, it seems as if there are too many. As more of these free 5k parkruns start up, they are bound to have an impact on existing races.

Major upgrade to Nenagh Indoor athletic track

The 200m indoor track in Nenagh, Co.Tipperary is the only one of its kind in Munster and is used every year for various Munster & County Indoor Championships. In the past, it was the venue for the National Championships but that is now held at the  new state of the art facility in Athlone IT.

As indoor facilities go, it's pretty basic but it's an indoor track all the same. The host club Nenagh Olympic AC have now embarked on a major upgrade.

Races this weekend and a new website!!!
For those of you who are regular visitors to this website, you'll have noticed that I have been expanding the content of the site over time. I have recently started to mention some of the races outside of Cork with some maps for the following reasons...
a) I know that a certain small percentage of Cork based runners might be interested in doing races in adjoining counties.
b) While the majority of visitors to this website are from Cork, it also gets quite a number of visitors from others counties as well.
c) I have received several e-mails from people outside of Cork asking for details of races in their areas.

However, I know that the majority of visitors are mainly interested in Cork events. It is after all called the Running in Cork Blog!! The question is how do I find the correct balance? I was reluctant to put up too much non-Cork related material.

My solution....start another website!! So, I have put together another blog and naturally enough, I have called it the 'Running in Munster' blog. It's not my intention to go into the same level of detail there as I do with the Cork blog but I hope to put up some brief information about the races in Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford on that site. So, in future for races outside of Cork, I'll give a brief mention on the Running in Cork site and then link to the main content which will be up on the 'Running in Munster' site.

Races this weeekend...There are 2 races of offer on Friday, the 14th of June. One is a 6 mile race in the Gaeltacht area of Ring, just South of Dungarvan in West Waterford. The other one is a 7 km race in Thurles in Tipperary. Both races start at 8pm.

"Great idea, it's often very hard to find out about these races. I'm living in Co. Limerick and travel to all the races in Cork. It's just as easy for me to travel to Tipperary and Waterford. This might even result in more races cropping up. I know the mountain running races need more promotion maybe they could be included as well. Results of the 'Bulmers' 10km race in Clonmel, Co.Tipp - Sun 11th May 2008

For anyone interested in travelling, the Bulmers 10 km road race takes place on Sunday, the 11th of May at 2pm in Clonmel, Co.Tipperary. I really don't have a whole lot of info on this race except for the following...

The Bulmers 10k takes place this Sunday, 11th May at 2pm. Entries, changing facilities and post race refreshments will be in the High School, Thomas Street, Clonmel. There is a T-Shirt and goody bag for all entries.
