Note from the organisers....All those who ran in Ballyandreen will have their numbers ready, lists start with No 1 for men and No 401 for women. Lists will be displayed on the wall, just find your number and ask for it at table.

Results of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race...Thurs 23rd June 2016

The second race of the Ballycotton Summer Series attracted a field of 570 runners on what was an overcast but cool evening.The race was won by Mark Hanrahan of Leevale AC in a time of 24:28, the fastest time there in 25 years. Aoife Cooke of Youghal AC won the womens race in a time of 28:23, the fastest winning time since Sonia O'Sullivan set the record of 27:33 back in 2001.

Numbers were down a fraction this year for the Shanagarry 5 mile road race with 562 taking part. That's still way above the historical average but down on the record 602 of 2014, possibly a sign of the sheer volume of races on at the moment.

Results of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race...Thurs 26th June 2014

A record 602 runners took part in this years Shanagarry 5 mile road race in East Cork, the second race of four in the ongoing Ballycotton Summer Series. Although this is just five ahead of the previous record of 597 set last year in 2013, what makes it remarkable is that almost 600 people took part in a 5k in Macroom at the same time.

The chart below shows the breakdown of numbers....

The mens race was won by James McCarthy of East Cork AC in a time of 24:53. It's worth noting that the last time that someone ran sub 5 minute miles for this race was back in 2005.

Another notable performance was that of Cathal O'Connell who set a new M50 course record when he ran 27:17. The previous M50 record was held by John Buckley who ran 27:37 back in 1996.

Details about the 2014 Ballycotton Summer Series...

The Ballycotton Summer Series is the oldest road race series in the country and it's hugely popular every year. The dates and times are always the same...4th Thursday of every month from May to August....Starts at 8pm except for the last one which is 7:30pm.

The one big change this year is the number of t-shirts for women. While the top 50 men in the series have got finishers t-shirts, the women have got 20. As I pointed out in this post last Autumn, the number of women now completing the series is at a level that 30 would be more appropriate. The organisers have now taken this on board and the top 30 women will now get t-shirts.

Every race usually gets around 500 runners so it's advisable to get to each one well before the start time. This map shows the locations of each race...

Results of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race...Thurs 27th June 2013

A record 598 runners turned out for this year's Shanagarry 5 mile road race, the second of four in the annual Ballycotton Summer Series. This is a big jump on the previous peak of 512 set back in 2011 and no doubt the fine weather on Thursday evening was a major factor in attracting the record crowds.

It's very easy to take the results and numbers for granted but it takes a lot of work and organising for a race of this size to be a success. For example, note...

1) Entry fee only €5.
2) No chip timing. This would have added probably something like €2.50 to the entry fee and yet a full set of accurate results were still produced.
3) ........and what most of you don't know. The results were being worked on until the early hours of Friday morning. They were e-mailed to me around 3am and I started on this post about 7am. The full results are up on the Internet and available for people to check just 12 hours after the race finished.

So it is worth remembering that Ballycotton Running Promotions, the organisers of the Summer Series and the Ballycotton 10 are doing all of this work on a voluntary basis. You might turn up and just run the race but there is an awful lot of work going on behind the scenes to make races like this a success.

The second race in the Ballycotton Summer Series goes ahead this evening with the Shanagarry 5 mile road race. The entry fee is just €5 and with the fine weather, it looks sure to attract a large crowd.

With an 8pm start, it is advisable to arrive in plenty of time...certainly well before 7:30pm. Note that the car parks are often some distance from the start line so take note.

Results of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race - Thurs 28th June 2012

A total of 485 runners turned out for the Shangarry 5 mile road race on Thursday, the 28th of June 2012. That's down a bit on the record turnout last year of 512 but that may well be explained by the wet weather and the fact that the semi-final of the European Football Championships between Germany and Italy was on the television. In the end, it was dry for most of the race with just some pools of water on the road. (2007 = 279, 2008 = 281, 2009 = 471, 2010 = 503 and 2011 = 512)

The winner of the mens race was Tim Twomey of Leevale AC while the first woman home was Helen Leonard of Rathfarnham-WSAF AC.

Race preview...Shanagarry 5 mile road race - Thurs 28th June 2012

There are three races coming up in the next two days that might be of interest. On Thursday evening, the second race of the Ballycotton Summer Series goes ahead in Shanagarry, East Cork.....details below. On Friday evening, there is a 10k road race in Courtmacsherry in West Cork. Race notice HERE and a preview to follow. Also on Friday evening, there is the Kilfinane 5 mile road race in South-East Limerick. This is the fourth race in Ballyhoura Active Series.

The 2nd race in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race Summer Series takes place in the small village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening at 8pm. Considering that they got 512 for this race last year, then it's likely to be a similar number again.

Directions... If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and from the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and follow the main R629 Midleton to Ballycotton road. Shanagarry is located on the main road between Cloyne and Ballycotton. If you are coming from Waterford, take a left at Castlemartyr for Ladysbridge and Garryvoe and follow the road on towards Shanagarry.

Parking... Note that due to the large number of cars, there are special parking arrangements. Follow the stewards instructions on the night.

Entries... Entries will be taken in a marquee at the GAA grounds in the centre of the village. There will be 2 queues for entries. If you ran the first race in the series in Ballyandreen then check the lists there for your number and join the appropriate queue. If not, join the other queue.

From the organisers...
SHANAGARRY ‘5’ RACE NUMBERS.......All those who ran in the first race of the Ballycotton Summer Series (Ballyandreen ‘5’) last month are automatically entered for the second race at Shanagarry this Thursday night. 
The numbers are in alphabetical order and can be seen at this LINK - it would help if people could find their number in advance and ask for same at one of the entry desks. There will be three distribution desks – those with numbers 1 to 200; numbers 201 to 400; and numbers 401 to 598.

Also, it would be appreciated if people had the correct fee of €5 ready to speed up the process. Entries will open from 6pm onwards with the race starting at 8pm.

For new people on the night (anyone who didn’t run Ballyandreen), there will be a separate entry desk as normal – entry fee again €5.


The race starts at 8pm and people are requested to arrive early in view of the large numbers expected and due to parking facilities this year being some distance away from the race headquarters.

Course...
The race starts just outside the petrol station at the main road junction on the Ballycotton road. It then drops slightly into the hollow by the GAA entrance, up past the road junction where the finish will be, past the church, down again into another slight hollow and up a bit of a pull until the road flattens out as you head towards the 1 mile mark. A pretty fast mile with no major drags.

The second mile is pretty flat. You run down to Garryvoe next to the beach, around a sharp bend and head inland again. A flat fast mile.

The third mile is not so easy. It is basically a long gentle uphill section until you turn off left onto a quiet country road and the 3 mile mark. You can expect to lose some time on the long climb.

The fourth mile starts easy. The first half mile is along a flat road with a great view to the left over the East Cork countryside....

At the next road junction, you take a very sharp left and then the road drops rapidly. It's almost too steep to really run on comfortably. Then it flattens out for a short section and then, you hit the hill! Not as bad as the 'Beast of Ballyandreen' but a nasty one all the same. After the initial shock, the gradient reduces as you hit the 4 mile mark. A tough mile.

For the start of the fifth and final mile, there is still a gradual climb for about 300 metres after the 4 mile mark. Then it flattens out as you negotiate a series of bends with matures trees on either side of the road providing plenty of cover. The last half mile is very fast as it is slightly downhill all the way to the finish.

Note from the organisers...."Regarding the course, we would like to remind runners to keep on the left after passing Garryvoe, there is no advantage to be gained by crossing over to the right and it can also be very dangerous."

It's beginning to sound like a bit of a cliché but it was yet again, another race with another record turnout. A total of 512 turned out for the 2nd race of the Ballycotton Summer series breaking last years record number of 503. Just to show how it has grown in recent years, here are the previous numbers...2007 = 279, 2008 = 281, 2009 = 471 and 2010 = 503

The winner of the mens race this year was John Shine of Leevale AC in a time of 26:22 (avg 5:16 per mile), just 7 seconds ahead of the winner of the 1st race in the series Roy Fahy of East Cork AC....(26:29...avg 5:18 per mile). In 3rd place, Chris Harrington of Leevale AC ran 27:02 (avg 5:24 per mile).

In the womens race, Claire McCarthy of St.Finbarrs AC made it two in a row for the series by winning in a time of 29:59 (avg 6:00 per mile). In 2nd place, Rhona Lynch of Eagle AC finished 2nd in 30:16 (avg 6:03 per mile) while Ann-Marie Holland of Eagle AC put in a strong finish to move through the field to take 3rd place in 31:31 (avg 6:18 per mile)

The 2nd race in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race Summer Series takes place in the small village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening at 8pm. Going on the numbers at recent races, it looks likely that there might be another record number. Considering that they got 520 for the first race in the series and they got 481 for this race last year, will the 500 barrier will be broken this year?



Directions...
If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and from the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and follow the main R629 Midleton to Ballycotton road. Shanagarry is located on the main road between Cloyne and Ballycotton. If you are coming from Waterford, take a left at Castlemartyr for Ladysbridge and Garryvoe and follow the road on towards Shanagarry.

Parking...
Note that due to the large number of cars, there will be new parking arrangements this year. If you are approaching from Cork, you will be directed to a car park which is about 800 metres from the registration point. This is roughly a 10 minute walk so allow for this.


Entries...
Entries will be taken in a marquee at the GAA grounds in the centre of the village. Here is some advice from the organisers...
All those who ran the first race at Ballyandreen last month are automatically entered for the Shanagarry ‘5’. Numbers are listed on the Ballycotton website in alphabetical order. On the night, there will be two queues – one for those with numbers from 1 to 300, the other for people with numbers over 300.
It would help greatly if you would note your number and join the correct queue and ask for the number at the entry desk. A similar list of names and numbers will also be displayed outside the marquee. Also, it saves a lot of time if you have the correct entry fee (which is just €5) at the ready.
Runners who did not run in Ballyandreen can enter in the normal way at a separate table (entry fee again €5).

Results of the Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race...Thurs 25th May 2009
n 2008, this race attracted 281 runners which was a record number at that time, a slight increase on the figure of 279 for 2007. For the 2009 race, they had an entry of around 471 runners which is 67% up on the 2008 figure. To have a new race grow by 67% might be fair enough but for a well establised race like this to grow by 67% is remarkable.

Where are all of the extra people coming from? It's probably fair to say that a lot must be Cork City Marathon Relay runners. If an event like that can attract several thousand runners, a lot of them will be new to the sport and of course, a percentage of these will go on to take part in other local races.

Preview of the Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 25th June (8pm)
The 2nd race in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race Summer Series takes place in the small village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening at 8pm. Going on the numbers at recent races and the fine weather, it looks likely that there might be another record number. Considering that they got 411 for the first race in the series and they got 281 for this race last year, surely the 300 barrier will be broken?

Directions...
If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and from the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and follow the main R629 Midleton to Ballycotton road. Shanagarry is located on the main road between Cloyne and Ballycotton. If you are coming from Waterford, take a left at Castlemartyr for Ladysbridge and Garryvoe and follow the road on towards Shanagarry. Parking should be available at the GAA grounds in the centre of the village and next to the church. Just follow the stewards directions. See map above.

Entries...
The event centre for this race is NOT in the usual small boxing hall which is located between the GAA grounds and the petrol station. Instead, it is inside a marquee in the GAA grounds.

Inside, there will be 3 queues....
Queues 1 & 2).....All those who ran in Race 1 will have numbers allocated corresponding to their finishing positions in Ballyandreen (winner will wear no. 1, second no. 2, etc). For women, the race numbers start with 301 (winner wears 301, etc).
There will be two desks in the marquee for the above pre-entered. The first will be for numbers 1 - 200, the second for numbers 201 - 425. This second desk will include all the women. People are asked to check for their numbers on the lists displayed at the entrance (in race number and alphabetical order) and ask for same at the desk.
Queue 3)...There will be a seperate entry desk for anyone who did not run the 1st race in Ballyandreen last month. This is not a BHAA race, so if you are not a member of an athletics club just say where you are from (Cork, Charleville, Cloyne, etc).

The entry fee is €5 and having the correct amount ready helps to speed up the process. It also helps if you can try and get there early so they have plenty of time to get everyones details onto the laptop.
Course...
The race starts just outside the petrol station at the main road junction on the Ballycotton road. It then drops slightly into the hollow by the GAA entrance, up past the road junction where the finish will be, past the church, down again into another slight hollow and up a bit of a pull until the road flattens out as you head towards the 1 mile mark. A pretty fast mile with no major drags.
The 2nd mile is pretty flat. You run down to Garryvoe next to the beach, around a sharp bend and head inland again. A flat fast mile.

The 3rd mile is not so easy. It is basically a long gentle uphill section until you turn off left onto a quiet country road and the 3 mile mark. You can expect to lose some time on the long climb.
The 4th mile starts easy. The first half mile is along a flat road with a great view to the left over the East Cork countryside. At the next road junction, you take a very sharp left and then the road drops rapidly. It's almost too steep to really run on comfortably. Then it flattens out for a short section and then, you hit the hill! Not as bad as the 'Beast of Ballyandreen' but a nasty one all the same. After the initial shock, the gradient reduces as you hit the 4 mile mark. A tough mile.
For the start of the 5th and final mile, there is still a gradual climb for about 300 metres after the 4 mile mark. Then it flattens out as you negotiate a series of bends with matures trees on either side of the road providing plenty of cover. The last half mile is very fast as it is slightly downhill all the way to the finish.

Note from the organisers...."Regarding the course, we would like to remind runners to keep on the left after passing Garryvoe, there is no advantage to be gained by crossing over to the right and it can also be very dangerous. Also, in view of the fine weather (!) traffic to the beach, etc will be heavy and to allow for this when travelling to the race."

Results of the Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race - 26th June 2008
Looking out the window today at 1pm at the wind and the rain, I was really expecting to head down to Shanagarry tonight for a good soaking. 7 hours later, the sun was shining and if anything, it was a little bit too warm. The joys of an Irish Summer! Perhaps the bad weather earlier might have deterred a few of the less hardy from making the trip yet still 281 turned out to set a new record attendance for the race. As always, the Ballycotton crew had everything down to a fine art.....parking, entries, stewarding.........and the weather!
