The annual Cork BHAA Pfizers 6-mile road race was held this year on Wed 14th May 2025 on what was a lovely summer evening. Despite the fine weather, the numbers were down about 12% this year. This may have been due in part to the large numbers going to the Cheetah Run 5k in Fota Wildlife Park the following evening.

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Pfizers 6-mile road race - Wed 10th May 2023

There was a good turnout of 368 runners for this years Cork BHAA Pfizer 6-mile road race on what was a nice sunny evening. As can be seen from the chart above, it was the 3rd highest number for this event.

In 2022, this race was cancelled so the 2023 race numbers should be seen in the light of pre and post pandemic. Nearly all races dropped in 2022 after the pandemic with a modest rise for 2023.

The 2019 race was at the end of wet day so that would have lowered numbers back then, this is especially true for a race where you enter on the night rather than pre-enter online. We probably shouldn't compare 2023 to 2019 but to the general numbers in the few years before the pandemic. Taken in that light, the 2023 numbers are good.

The Cork BHAA is independent of Athletics Ireland and there is no need to online entry with the extra fees or the costs of a one-day licence. People just look at the weather, turn up on the night and put €5 or €10 into the biscuit tin.

The fact that the BHAA races are now some of the cheapest to enter on the race calendar must surely have something to do with the good numbers.

Cork BHAA Pfizers 6-mile for 2022 cancelled

The Pfizers 6-mile road race in Ringaskiddy was originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday the 11th of May 2022 but it has now been cancelled.

The Cork BHAA write... "The Pfizer 6 mile race has been cancelled for 2022 due to Covid concerns. We hope to have this race back on our calendar next year."

This follows on from the BHAA UCC 10k which was also cancelled a few weeks ago.

Hopefully both races will be back in 2023 although the construction work for the new N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway should be in full swing by this time next year.

This new road goes right through the middle of the Pfizers 6-mile course so that may cause its own problems.

Notice : Cork BHAA Pfizers 6 mile road race - Wed 8th May 2019

The next race on the Cork BHAA calendar is the Pfizers 6 mile road race near Ringaskiddy on Wednesday the 8th of May 2019.

Given its proximity to Cork City and Carrigaline, it should attract a good bit of interest.

Directions.......It's very easy to find. From the South Ring Road in Cork City, follow all of the signs for Ringakiddy. As you get closer, you come to the small village of Shanbally.

Follow the signs for Rinaskiddy...straight through the roundabout...and 500m later, take a left...signposted 'Raffeen Creek Sports Club'. Follow the stewards directions on the night on where to park which will probably be next to the playing fields.

Entries, post race refreshments and prize giving will be at the Pfizers club house.

Entries......As with all Cork BHAA events, the race entry will be €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-registered. It's probably best to be there from say 7:00pm to 7:20pm so that you can enter in plenty of time.

This year the course is on its traditional route.

From the organisers...

· 37th anniversary of long running BHAA race

Here’s a list of prizes –

·        The top 4 men and women

·        Men’s category 1st, 2nd & 3rd  in 0/40 0/45 0/50 0/55 0/60 0/65 & 1st & 2nd in 0/70

·        Women’s category 1st, 2nd & 3rd  in 0/35 0/40 0/45 0/50 0/55 & 1st & 2nd in 0/60 + 1st 0/65

·        To mark 50th anniversary of Pfizer in Ireland, there will be a prize for the 50th male & female finisher

The post race refreshments put on by the staff of Pfizers are second to none and there's a pretty good chance you will eat more calories than you burn off by running the race! ;o).

A race with a long history. Recommended.

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Pfizers 6 mile road race...Wed 10th May 2017

The Cork BHAA Pfizers 6 mile road race was held on Wednesday the 10th of May 2017 with a total of 402 runners crossing the finish line. That's represents a 13% jump on last years numbers and is the second highest ever for the event.

If you follow the results of local races in Cork, you'll see that a lot of races are struggling to maintain their numbers. For a 6 mile race to get such good numbers is something special, especially when you consider that the distance is too far for a lot of the Couch to 5k runners out there.

From the organisers...

· The 6 mile course route is shown in the poster, and is a new course for 2016 due to road closures in the area.
· 34th anniversary of long running BHAA race
· The race will be starting in the opposite direction to previous years, and further back from the roundabout than usual.
· The first mile is will be very fast, with a descent of about 60 feet over about 800m into Ringaskiddy village.
· The second mile starts flat but then you have the first climb of the evening - a right turn onto a sharp hill of about 400m just opposite the entrance to Ringaskiddy port. After cresting the hill, the next half mile or so is downhill, past the national school, which is just beyond the 2 mile marker. Anyone who does the Army/Navy 5 mile will be familiar with this road, except you will run it in the opposite direction here.
· After the national school the third mile continues with a slight drag, turning left at the junction with the R613. From here you pass the entrance to Novartis. Just after the 3 mile marker there is a good downhill stretch, loosing 60ft over about 400m. Turn right at Coolmore cross.
· The next mile will be tough on tired legs as you climb gradually to the Grotto at the back of Shanbally and turn right around the back of Novartis and past the 4 mile marker.
· The fifth mile starts with a small drag of about 400m or so, and then its nearly all downhill as you continue down this narrow country road and turn left back onto the R613 and fast descent back down to just outside Ringaskiddy village.
· The last mile starts as you turn left onto the N25, with a gentle climb back up past Pfizer and a slight downhill to the finish just outside the Rafeen Creek Sports Club (formerly the Pfizer Sports Club).
· A challenging course, with plenty of climbs and descents
· Legendary post-race refreshments afterwards

Overall.......a longstanding race which is popular with a lot of runners. Parts of the course are challenging yet you should still post a reasonable time.
