Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Novartis 5k road race - Wed 3rd Aug 2022

This years Cork BHAA Novartis 5k road race was held on Wednesday the 3rd of August 2022 with 283 runners taking part on what was a dry evening. As can be seen from the chart above, the numbers are down about 20% on the 2019 numbers. In fact, we'd have to go 20 years to 2002 to find a lower number.

On one hand, 283 is still a good number for a local road race and there would be a lot of other races that would be delighted to get 283 runners. It's just that it's not as good as it was.

The Cork BHAA races are some of the cheapest to enter with €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-reg so it's not the cost that is responsible for the drop.

Why does a race that got over 600 runners back in 2014 get less than half now?

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Novartis 5k road race... Wed 1st Aug 2018

There was a big drop in numbers for this years Novartis 5k race in Ringaskiddy with 312 runners taking part, down 27% on last year. Considering that it was a damp wet evening, many people probably opted to stay at home.

As can be seen from the chart below, the last time the numbers were lower than this was way back in 2002!  It's probably likely that the numbers will be up again next year if the weather is kinder but I suspect that the days of getting 600 like back in 2014 are well behind us.

Results & photos of the Cork BHAA Novartis 5k race...Wed 3rd Aug 2016

Weather conditions were dry and overcast for this years Cork BHAA Novartis 5k road race on Wednesday the 3rd of August 2016. A total of 392 runners took part which is a 27% drop on the 2015 numbers.

At the front of the field, Mark Hanrahan had a huge lead over the rest of the field even after just two miles. It was pretty obvious at the two mile mark that it was more of a time trial for Mark than it being a race. You can look at the results and the times but it's only when you see Mark pass and then you stand and wait for the next person to pass that you see how huge the gap was.

Results of the Cork BHAA Novartis 5k road race - Wed 3rd Aug 2011

A total of 384 runners turned out for this 5 k road race in Ringaskiddy on Wednesday evening. While it was down on last year, when you look back over the last decade you can see how the numbers attending road races have grown. It is probably safe to say that the number of races has also grown so it's a sign of just popular running is at the moment.

The winner of the mens race in Novartis was John Meade in a time of 16:22. The first woman home was Martina Kiely in 18:12.

The full results can be seen HERE

By the way, there seems to have been a problem with people leaving the chute early at the finish. It might be worth pointing out that when people do this, it causes a lot of hassle for the organisers when they are trying to work out the correct results.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km road race - Wed 4th Aug 2010

Photobucket
A total of 424 runners turned out for this 5 km road race in Ringaskiddy on a fine Summers evening. This figure was down a bit on the last years number of 468 (2008 = 416).

With some recent debates about the ongoing high entry fees (e.g. €50 for Half-Marathons), this Novartis race is really at the opposite end of the spectrum. When you consider that the entry fee is only €5 for registered runners and you got a t-shirt for that as well, it really shows what good value the Cork BHAA races are.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km road race - Wed 4th Aug 2010

This 5 km road race takes place at 8pm on Wednesday evening, the 4th of August at 8pm. Registration is in the Novartis plant near Ringakiddy and the start and finish points are just outside the entrance.

Directions...If you are not sure of where to go, then just follow the signs for the car ferry from Cork city. As you enter Ringaskiddy, take the first right and go up the hill. The Novartis plant is about 1 km up this road on the right.

Registration....There will be 2 entry desks as normal.......one for registered runners (€5) and one for non-registered (€8). As always, it will help to get there as early as possible as there should be a big turnout.

Course details...This is a hilly 5 km race yet it seems to produce some fast times. The start and finish are more or less in the same spot just outside the Novartis plant. The first mile is probably the fastest with an overall fall of ground to the 1 mile mark. The 2nd mile is a long drag all the ways up that hill by Pfizers and Shanbally. The 3rd mile has a bit of everything......it starts with a pull up out of Shanbally, then a downhill section and then finishes halfway up a steep hill. Beyond the 3 mile mark, the final 150 metres or so is a tough pull and the finish line is just beyond the end of the climb.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km road race - Wed 5th Aug 2009 (Updated Thurs 6th 11pm)
They always seem to get nice weather for this race and so it turned out again last night with a nice mild summers evening. Somewhere in the region of 470 runners turned out for this 5 km road race, an increase of about 50 on last year's figure of 416.

Results........the full results are now available HERE.

Photos........
1) Jorge Ruiz Villasante was out again with his camera and took another excellent series of photos. Here are a selection that I picked out.

In this shot, Jorge uses the natural dip in the road to capture almost all
of the 470 runners as they head towards the half-mile mark.

At first sight, perhaps not the nicest of photos? Yet, the BHAA are an inter-company series of road races and the race did take place in a largely industrial area so the photo puts the rest into context.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km Road Race - Wed 5th Aug (8pm)
This 5 km road race takes place at 8pm on Wednesday evening, the 5th of August. Registration is in the Novartis plant and the start and finish points are just outside the entrance. This is exactly the same route as the Cork BHAA IPS/Garda 5k back in May except that the start and finish points are at different point on the loop.

Directions...If you are not sure of where to go, then just follow the signs for the car ferry from Cork city. As you enter Ringaskiddy, take the first right and go up the hill. The Novartis plant is about 1 km up this road on the right.

Registration....There will be 2 entry desks as normal.......one for registered runners (€5) and one for non-registered (€7). As always, it will help to get there as early as possible, especially considering that the weather forecast looks ok and there should be a big turnout.

Course details...This is a hilly 5 km race yet it seems to produce some fast times. The start and finish are more or less in the same spot just outside the Novartis plant. Results of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km Road Race - Wed 6th Aug 2008
A record crowd of 416 runners turned out for this 5 km road race in Ringaskiddy. It was obvious from early on that the numbers were going to be high when the Novartis car park was full to capacity. 416 is a huge number for what is just a local 5 km road race. Looking at some of the results of the Dublin BHAA, they don't anything near 400 runners for their races. Why are we getting 400+ down here when they are getting around the 250 mark up in Dublin?

Photos...There are now 2 sets of photos up on the Eagle AC website.
John Quigley has 274 shots available

Pat O'Driscoll has 150 photos

Refreshments...A cup of tea would have been nice

Results...The full results are now available HERE.

Note....There is a slight error in the results in that they mention that the next BHAA race, the ARMY/NAVY 5 Mile is on the 20th of August at 8:00pm. Please note that the race starts at 7:30pm!!

Comments...
"Would just like to congratulate the BHAA on the speed of the results from last nights race, they took a bit of stick not to long ago about how slow results were and fair play to them for having them out today less than 24 hours after the race. Well done to all involved............John Dunphy, Midleton AC"
