Results of the Cork BHAA 'IPS/Garda' 5 km Road Race - Thurs 14th May 2009

The weather for this race was almost a carbon copy of the conditions for the Pfizers race....dull, overcast and damp. Looking out at the weather at around 6:30pm, it looked like it was going to be an awful evening. However by the time the race started, the rain had more or less stopped. Despite the poor weather, the race still attracted nearly 300 runners which was down slightly on last year (314). No doubt if it was a nice evening, the numbers would have been well over 300.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'IPS/Garda' 5 km road race - Thurs 14th Apr (8pm)

The next race on the Cork BHAA calendar sees a return to Ringaskiddy for the 'IPS/Garda' 5 km road race. Last year, they got a turnout of 314 for this race which is good for any evening race. The Pfizers 6 mile race in the same location got 275 runners, an increase of 28% on the previous year. Will the IPS/Garda race get a 28% increase??? If they do, that will mean about 400 runners will take part! It's hard to imagine them getting that many but a lot of the races recently seem to be getting crazy numbers. The one big factor may be the weather as it would seem as if the rain won't be too far away.

Registration...The registration point for this race is the Pfizers Sports Centre which is located near Ringaskiddy. From Cork, take the main road for the Car Ferry and Ringaskiddy. As you go through Shanbally, you will pass through a small roundabout. About 400 metres later, you'll see the first turn off to the left. Take this and there will be stewards there directing you towards the car park. The entry fee is €5 for registered runners and €7 for non-registered.

Course...The start is between the entrance to the sports complex and the village of Shanbally. Just after the start, it's a bit chaotic as everyone takes the left at the roundabout and the field is still bunched. Then the road straightens out and you go up a slight uphill section, nothing serious but enough to put anyone starting too fast into oxygen debt. Then a sharp left, a sharp right, a long straight section with a steep drop at the end to the 1 mile mark near the road junction. The start of the 2nd mile starts with a short uphill section to the entrance of Novartis. Then, the going is pretty flat until there is a sharp drop down to the 2 mile mark near the road junction near Ringaskiddy. The section from the 2 mile mark to the finish is probably the hardest. It's a long section going up a gentle hill all the way. The finish is just outside the Sports complex.

Overall...
It's probably not the fastest of 5km course with the number of climbs along the route. However, none of the hills are that serious so your times won't be out that much.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'IPS/Garda' 5km road race - 15th May 2008

There seemed to have been a big turn out for this race. I'm not sure what the numbers were but it certainly looked in excess of 300 runners. In terms of weather conditions, it was a big contrast from the wet Pfizers 6 mile of last week as we were blessed with a lovely evening with some summer sunshine.

"The reality is that the usual race software used for the non-BHAA races does not suit the requirements of the BHAA. They need to sort out registered from non-registered runners and then they need to track the grade or handicap of each registered runner to work out the prizes in each category. At present, it takes someone several hours to generate the results and to get them up on the BHAA website. It's important to remember that all of this is done on a voluntary basis. Perhaps the whole process could be speeded up but it's not as easy or obvious as it seems...........John Desmond"

"Hello, As someone who has only being participating in the BHAA & associated races for the past few years, can I just say that these people complaining about not having results from races up immediately should really keep their thoughts to themselves. All of the work is being done on a voluntary basis, with (the same !!) people giving of their time every couple of weeks to ensure eveything runs smoothly. It is a fairly thankless job, and if complaining is the only contribution someone can make, they really should not bother. So, to all involved with the organising and running of the races over the year, thanks a million, it is very much appreciated by (almost) everyone........Anonymous"

"Hi John. Would like To reply to comments re BHAA results as I am a dedicated BHAA committee member. For years, we had the great work of a non-committee member working many long hours, sometimes while rest of us were asleep after an evening race whilst he sent results via e-mail to each of our members within 24 hrs. Were'nt we spoilt?? Maybe you guys/girls who are so disappointed could come on board our small hardworking committee and help get those results out sooner?.While ye are off home filled with Tea /Coffee, sandwiches etc, some of us are compiling results, picking up mile markers and lots more unnoticed work. To All The Rest, many thanks, we do it for the love of our sport......MT"
