Preview of the John Buckley Sports 10 miler in Cork City - Sat 31st Aug 2019

I've had a number of messages asking for details of the new route for this years John Buckley Sports 10 mile in Cork City.

The start this year will be on the Centre Park Road and it will finish by Kennedy Park on Monahan Road.

The course can be broken up into two parts. The first part is the 2.4 mile loop shown below in pink arrows...

Once you cross the start line again, you then head off down the Marina... past Blackrock Castle ... onto the Mahon walk and then back to the finish by Kennedy Park.

You'll find an updated and more comprehensive review of the course here... https://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.com/2013/01/cork085.html

Weather Forecast...... There is heavy rain expected early Saturday morning but it is supposed to be pretty dry by the evening. There will be a possibility of some pools of water out along the course (e.g. Atlantic Pond) but it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

There is a strong breeze from the North-West but there will be a lot of shelter in the old railway cutting when it is a headwind. Might be a factor in the last mile.

The last two years were wet affairs so this year looks a lot better.

*****
As for the weather forecast, it looks like a mixed bag for the weekend. Rain on Friday, dry on Saturday and rain on Sunday. The question is what time will the rain arrive on Sunday? The afternoon looks worse than the morning although with the pressure being so low, the rain is never that far away.

The only thing that is likely is a south-easterly breeze...

It's unlikely to be a major factor early on but after the runners reach the walkway around the 6 mile mark after Blackrock Castle, it could be. That area is wide open and once you turn the corner around 6.3 miles, there is no shelter.

On the flip side, once the runners reach the water station around 7.5 miles then the wind should be behind them. The last two miles will be in the railway cutting and with the overhead trees and steep banks, it is very sheltered from the elements.

The temperature will be in the low teens so a singlet or dry fit top on its own is probably best.

Dry Fit Top for the 2015 Cork City 10 Miler...Sun 13th Sept 2015

The John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler is coming up next Sunday the 13th of March and it should attract a lot of interest. With a course set out around the Marina and the Mahon walkway, it's a fast 10 mile course.

This is the dry fit top that will be given out to the first 800 to enter...

In contrast to the red top last year with white trim, this year the colours are reversed.

From St.Finbarr's AC...The countdown has begun for the John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler...
Online entries have reopened and will remain open until Saturday 12th. Entries are being accepted in John Buckley Sports until Saturday evening at 5.30 pm and on the morning from 8.00 am at Lee Rowing Club at a cost of €25. There will be no fee increase on the day but there will be no guarantee of T-shirt with the Sunday morning entries...

Notice...John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler - Sun 13th Sept 2015

Here is another one for the diaries. The John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler race is coming up on Sunday the 13th of September 2015. This is the second year of this particular event and this year, it will double up as the Cork County 10 mile championships which is something new.

Located in the heart of Cork City, this is going to be popular with a lot of runners. 10 miles is a favourite distance for a lot of people as can be seen by the huge numbers doing the various 10 milers like Dungarvan and Ballycotton in the Spring.

As 10 mile courses go, this is up there with the fastest of them and takes in the flat walkways around Mahon and Blackrock.

Results of the John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 mile road race - Sun 14th Sept 2014

A total of 500 runners turned out for the inaugural John Buckley Sport Cork City 10 Miler on Sunday the 14th of September 2014. Organised by St.Finbarr's Athletic Club, this new 10 mile race replaced the old half-marathon in Blarney.

When it was announced back in July that it would be changing to a half-marathon, there was a mixed reaction. Just looking at the numbers, the record for the Blarney Half was 501 in 2012. The figure for the new 10 mile race almost matched that so there is no real drop.

Preview of the John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler...Sun 14th Sept 2014

The big race this weekend is of course the John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler organised by St.Finbarr's AC. More info in this earlier post.

Course Preview......You can see a preview of the 10 mile course HERE

Remember that you can still enter on the morning of the race at Lee Rowing Club next to Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Entries open at 8am. Entries close around 9:30-40am.

Note that there is a technical top for the first 800 entries. Roughly 400 people have already pre-entered. If you are entering on Sunday then do so as early as possible to make sure you get a top.

Update from the organisers St.Finbarr's AC...
1) People will collect the tee shirt after they finish / collection point will be between the finish & the boat club. The first 800 entries are entitled to a shirt . To keep track of this, the first entrant got number 1 and so on – no tee shirt for anybody with number higher than 800.  With the launch of a new race it’s impossible to gauge the expected numbers, hence tee-shirts for the first 800 entries only.
If anybody pre-entered before the deadline last Sunday and didn’t receive their number in the post we will look after them at the registration desk on the morning (they will definitely get a tee shirt). If anybody pre-entered late (online or in John Buckley Sports) after the numbers were posted on Monday, their number can be collected from the registration desk.

2) There will be two timing mat’s...one at the start and one at the finish.

3) Two water stations – 250 ml bottles sports caps (approx 4.5 ml and 7.5 (near halfway point for marathon opposite Harty’s Quay).

4) There will be some overtaking at the end of the second lap Centre Park Road / Monahan Rd – fastest 10% is lightly to catch the slowest 10% of runners (just like in the John Buckley Sports 5K). Runners  on their first lap stay tight to left hand side as usual, the runners passing will be turning off to the right anyway so should not be an issue.

5) Pacers...There will be 60, 70, 80 and 90 minute pacers
