Guest Post: The W word ...by Pat Walsh

 * The W word *

During the last week of September, the weather was poor. Yes we are heading for the Winter it cannot be denied or held back.

Last Sunday in Cork was wet, windy and cold since first light. Races and matches cancelled and a real feel of a change in seasons.

Did we ever actually get a Summer?

As a runner, are you ready for the few months ahead?

Many are in Marathon mode with a few months and the enthusiasm will get you there. Best of luck to all.

For others it is now more important than ever to have a goal to aim for. It will get you out to train and keep the fitness going.

Enter a race, it is a great motivator.

One job today, when I couldn’t get outside the front door, was to find some of the jackets and long sleeve gear that will be needed. The vest and singlets can be retired for the rest of the Year.

To run is a privilege and we must be grateful and accept it. The weather in general is never too bad in Ireland and we can run 12 months if the year if the willingness is there.

Excuses can always be made but we are codding no-one only ourselves.

If you wait for perfect conditions you will get nothing done.

We need to toughen the mind as well as the body to keep us on the road.

I didn’t run today, I will run tomorrow.

Thankfully I have topped up on the Vitamin D after a recent warm weather break.

When will I see sun and heat again?

Have a good week ahead.
