Results & photos of the Munster Junior & Masters Cross Country Championships...Sun 11th Jan 2015

This was held in Waterford city on Sunday the 11th of Jan 2015. In the mens senior race, East Cork AC won the club title with the Cork team taking Silver. In the senior womens race, there were only two women from Cork in it so not enough to scare as a team (4 required).

The winner of the Senior womens race was Shona Heaslip who represented Ireland at the U23 race at the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria last December. Members of the Kerry team took all the podium positions and the county title as well.

Addendum...
Just a quick look at the numbers. In the senior races this year, there were 22 women and 39 men. That compares to 13 women and 40 men when it was held in Tipperary the previous year so there is obviously an issue with numbers taking part.

In the Munster masters cross country in Watergrasshill at the start of Dec 2014, there were 66 women and 182 men...a complete contrast.

Looking at the results of the Munster Senior and Junior Crosscountry Championships it is sad reading from a Cork view, Junior Women, 4 all Togher, Junior Men NO Cork athlete, Senior Women two from Cork and all this from a County that is the only one one in Ireland that owns its own Cross Country course.

Just wondering why there was no representation from Leevale AC or St Finbarr's AC in the Senior Mens race? Did the Senior Mens XC clash with some other race or did the clubs make a decision not to send members? Perhaps there is some other reason. It's not just the cork clubs, but this race was poorly supported by clubs across Munster. After all, only 39 athletes competed with 11 of these being from Waterford AC. V

Leevale were on a training weekend in Banna so that explains their absence.

The honour of representing your county should surely supersede a training weekend, in the old days to be picked to represent your county was the objective that all athletes aspired to.

It's also an odd time of year for a cross country race. The cross country season usually runs from October to December. A lot of clubs are now looking at the indoor season or the upcoming 10 milers.

Has the Munster council and its championships outlived their usefullness? Athletics Ireland boasts of membership increases year affter year yet the numbers competing in senior and junior competions is declining, who is foooling who? Athleats, clubs and county boards should all be asking questions up to recently the Munster cross countrys in all grades was keenly contested by all six counties puttng out their best athleats. It appears a Munster medal has no value. With the Schools cross country being held later in the month shurley Sunday was a perfect run out to asssertain their level of fitnes.
