Results & photos of the Munster Masters Cross Country Championships in Dungarvan...Sun 20th Nov 2016
The Munster Masters Cross Country Championships were held in Dungarvan on Sunday the 20th of November and West Waterford AC were the host club.
As is common with these events, the fields for both the men's and women's races were dominated by more local clubs. For example, in the women's race, there was no county team from Limerick or Clare. In the men's event, only Cork, Waterford and Tipperary had enough for a county team.
Overall, the standard for Masters was pretty high and many fast runners finishing well down the field.
The full results are now up on the Munster Athletics website

Results of the Munster Novice Cross Country Championships...Sun 23rd Oct 2016
The Munster Novice Cross Country Championships were held near Carraig na bhFear in Cork on Sunday the 23rd of October. The numbers taking part were pretty good with 66 in the women's race and 88 on the men's.
However, when you drill down into the results and look at the inter-county competition, you'll see that a lot of counties are missing. In the mens novice race, there was no county team from Kerry, Waterford and Limerick...i.e. half of the counties in Munster. For the women's event, there was no teams from Waterford or Limerick.
The full results can be seen on the Munster Athletics website HERE

Results of the Munster Marathon & Half-Marathon Championships...May 2016
The Great Limerick Run doubled up this year as the Munster Marathon and Half-Marathon Championships. This is part of an 3 year arrangement between Munster Athletics and the Great Limerick Organisers. In previous years, the Charleville Half-Marathon was used as the Munster Half-Marathon Championship.
The one negative aspect about this years results are that the team results are for mixed teams. Instead of having proper results with a separate womens section, they just lumped the men and women in together which is a bit of a cop out. It's almost like they couldn't be bothered which will confirm to a lot of people that this championship is more about making money than really caring about a proper competition.
These are the medal winners from Cork...

Here are the results from 2015 when it was held in Charleville. Proper results with separate womens teams. Obviously it wasn't making as much money back then.
* Update...Tues 10th May...It would seem as if someone has made a pretty big mistake with the category results. See the graphic below. On the left are the categories as laid out before the race. It states quite clearly...Men Over 40, Men Over 50 and the same for women. On the right, you can see what categories can be searched on the chip timing website. They are broken down on M35, M45, M55...not M40, M50. Munster Athletics have based their M40 results on the M45 positions, the M50 results on the M55 positions and so on. It's the same for the marathon.

Great Limerick Run appointed official Munster Marathon & Half-Marathon Championships for 2016-2018
It was announced today that the Great Limerick Run held every May will be the official Munster Athletics Marathon and Half-Marathon Championships for 2016 to 2018.
This is a major change from the last few years when the Charleville Half-Marathon in September was the Munster Half-Marathon Championship.
The entry fee according to the race website is €65 for the full Marathon and €50 for the Half-Marathon. The €50 for the Half is in marked contrast to the Rock n Roll Half-Marathon in Dublin where club runners get a discounted price. The Munster Marathon Championships are a new development.
Another question that arises is how much is this actually worth to Munster Athletics? Will the money be funneled back into athletics? It's an important consideration as the Limerick race is a commercial event.
The Great Limerick Run takes place on Sunday the 1st of May 2016.

Results of the Munster Senior Cross Country Championships...Sun 8th Nov 2015
The Munster Senior Cross Country Championships were held in Beaufort, Co.Kerry on what turned out to be the wettest day of the week. The numbers for a Munster competition were a bit on the low side but perhaps the weather was a factor there.
In nearly most cross country races for adults, the men always outnumber the women by quite a margin. Unusually this time round, they were almost equal. There were 33 in the mens race and 28 in the womens. Maybe it shouldn't be such a suprise considering how strong womens cross country running is in Kerry with the team from the Kingdom scoring very high nationally last year.

This was held in Waterford city on Sunday the 11th of Jan 2015. In the mens senior race, East Cork AC won the club title with the Cork team taking Silver. In the senior womens race, there were only two women from Cork in it so not enough to scare as a team (4 required).
The winner of the Senior womens race was Shona Heaslip who represented Ireland at the U23 race at the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria last December. Members of the Kerry team took all the podium positions and the county title as well.

Addendum...
Just a quick look at the numbers. In the senior races this year, there were 22 women and 39 men. That compares to 13 women and 40 men when it was held in Tipperary the previous year so there is obviously an issue with numbers taking part.
In the Munster masters cross country in Watergrasshill at the start of Dec 2014, there were 66 women and 182 men...a complete contrast.
The winner of the Senior womens race was Shona Heaslip who represented Ireland at the U23 race at the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria last December. Members of the Kerry team took all the podium positions and the county title as well.
