Guest Post: Spring ...by Pat Walsh

 * Spring *

In Celtic mythology the 1st of February was Imbolc, a festival to celebrate life and new beginnings and marking the arrival of spring. We associate this now with St Brigid who was a Celtic goddess of healing, poetry and blacksmithing. 2 of out of 3 isn’t too bad for me. Note to self: get out the hammer and anvil.

“When one flower blooms, spring awakens everywhere.” – John O’Donohue

Last week felt like Spring for me anyway.

A new parkrun in Midleton last Saturday which drew a massive crowd of smiley heads.

There was a run for the ages with the winners and a huge crowd on Sunday in Dungarvan at the John Treacy 10mile. Super top class finishing times mixed with 2840 people of all abilities going over the finish line.

Running is strong in Ireland and we should be so grateful to have this sport / recreational amenity available to us. It is there to get out of it whatever you want from it and what you are willing to work for.

The weather has been great, after our recents storms it was beautiful. Bright now until 6pm (I sound like my Dad, RIP, saying that). I thought only older people had a fixation on this but then I looked at my birth cert and the truth dawned on me.

I’m still a bit crocked but trying to be positive. I’m on the mend and it only needs time and patience. I can volunteer to help and I’m free to spectate at events. This can bring its own joy and sense of fun where you can go home from something that you were part of. You still can do hugs and chats and banter with the added bonus of going for a mid-run coffee while all the merry gallopers are out the country somewhere bursting a gut.

The Bike is having a great time as my go-to fresh air exercise. It is quite photogenic and was loving that I cleaned it up for the cycles and the pictures. Feel free to contact if you want company on the new Greenway.

I can swim but I find the pool monotonous after a few lengths and please don’t be mentioning open water swimming. I have suffered enough.

SO spring off the couch and spring into action. A good week and year awaits you. Feel free to comment about your week and how wonderful you are. Don’t let the weeks slip pass now. The multitude of races will be coming soon and you want to be able for them.  Above all, live life and enjoy it, don’t waste it or miss the opportunity to better yourself. Loads of help and support out there.

The Running in Cork Facebook page now has over 20,000 followers...

A few weeks back, the Running in Cork Facebook page passed the 20,000 mark in terms of the number of followers. At the time of writing, it has 20,494 followers.

What impact does this have? With Facebook, it's all about the algorithm. When you put up a post there, they don't show that post to all of your friends or followers. They first see what kind of initial response the post gets and that then determines how many people they will eventually show the post to.

The number of followers here is an important consideration. If a page has 200 followers, you're pretty much talking to yourself. If it has 2,000 followers then you're starting to get places. When you have 20,000 followers, you can really get the word out.

A case in point is the new Midleton Greenway 5k parkrun. On the 7th of January, I put up a post on the blog about the new parkrun and I then put up an associated post on the Running in Cork Facebook page. That post was viewed 86,398 times on Facebook and reached 52,184 accounts there.

On the 28th of January, I put up a reminder on Facebook and it got 41,999 views there and reached 32,401 accounts. On the 31st of January, I put a guest post by Pat Walsh up on the blog and the associated graphic on Facebook got 15,896 views and reached 12,016 accounts.

Add up all of those views on Facebook and the number of visitors to the blog and it was probably no great surprise that the inaugural Midleton Greenway parkrun had 636 finishers and according to Pat, broke the record for Ireland for a new parkrun by about 250.

If we look at the recent Dungarvan 10m, then it's important that the winners get credit and as much publicity as possible for winning. My photo of Fearghal Curtin on Facebook got 53,683 views and reached 39,770 accounts. My photo of Niamh Allen got 71,406 views and reached 52,952 accounts.

And then of course we have the photo of Birthday girl Maggie Dunne! Maggie who was aged 80 when she ran this years Dungarvan 10 got 77,283 views and reached 58,197 accounts!

If anyone wants to follow the Running in Cork page on Facebook then you'll find it HERE

Friday Jigsaw: Mick Dooley & Kate Veale - Feb 2025

It's been a while since I had a jigsaw up on the blog!

This one has 130-pieces and it's a photo of Mick Dooley with top Irish racewalker Kate Veale at the recent Dungarvan 10m road race.

Guest Post: Midleton Greenway Day 1 ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Midleton Greenway Day1 **

Fantastic day today and credit to all involved to get this venture off the ground.

Loads of background work, no idea what numbers to expect today and a brand new course to run on.

This was badly needed for running and leisure activity and it will be a great help in for physical exercise and fresh air in the area.

It will encourage people to run and take part in something and we didn’t have that in Midleton.

636 is the official finishers but I think as many locals get used to finish tokens and funnels we may have lost a few.

As the guy roaring and marshalling everyone at the finish line we counted 647 going over the line. I think it broke the record for Ireland for a new parkrun by about 250…. OMG

Huge credit to Liagh as the Director today, no second name and no pic as she would kill me. As we celebrate the life of St Brigid this weekend we had our own lady to lead the team. Thanks to the experienced parkrun officials who travelled from their own home run to help delivery the baby.

Thanks to everyone who took part. This is not a race, it is a run to enjoy and the general good mood and buzz from everyone was unreal. A run for everyone and still we had 2 Olympians in our midst. Brendan and Aoife delighted to see you both.

Of course there was slight issues and yes some learning to be done but the response from everyone was one of overwhelming fun and gratitude.

I personally fell in late to this venture and volunteered on the day as I am crocked. I would encourage anyone to lend a hand if they can. It is only through many volunteers that this is viable as a long term project.

If you are reading this and would like to take part then feel free any Saturday 9.30am at Midleton Greenway.

Notice: Skibbereen 10-mile & 5-mile road races - Sun 9th February 2025

Skibbereen AC are holding their annual 10-mile road race in west Cork on Sunday the 9th of February 2025. There is also a 5-mile option for anyone preferring a shorter distance.

Previous editions of this race were held in November but the club has decided to make it a February event.

This is very much a traditional type of road race with loads of refreshments afterwards (i.e. tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes, etc) and there are hot showers in the GAA club changing rooms.

Proceeds from both races go towards the Palliative Care Services in Skibbereen Community Hospital and St Patrick's BNS classes for children with autism.

Entries HERE

Registrations will also be taken on the day at the O Donovan Rossa GAA pavilion from 10:30am onwards. The entry fee for the 10 mile is 25 Euros while the entry fee for the 5 Mile run is 20 Euros.

The 10 Mile race will get underway at 1pm with the 5 Mile Run starting at 1:15pm.

Guest Post: Proud day for the village ...by Pat Walsh

 * Proud day for the village *

I wrote last week about 10 mile running times in Ireland and delighted to say I have been put back in my box.

Dungarvan 10 mile last Sunday and Fearghal Curtin won the race on 47.42.

I will repeat 47.42 for 10miles.

Fearghal is Youghal AC and living locally but as his Dad and myself soldiered on GAA fields for Castlemartyr and ran road,  I'm over the moon for this result.

It has entered the records in the top 10 all time fastest runs in Ireland.

Unreal and yes the modern generation are something to be proud of.

The ladies course record was also broken by Niamh Allen from Leevale AC. 52.50.. WOWSER

Good day for Cork running

Results of the 5k parkruns in Cork - Sat 1st Feb 2025

Results of the 5k parkruns around the county on Saturday 1st Feb 2025. Approximately 1655 runners and walkers took part in the 11 events in Co Cork.

Report... The big parkrun in Co Cork this week was of course the inaugural Midleton Greenway which ended up with a huge turnout of 636 finishers!

Midleton... What can you say? 600+ finishers on the first outing which is really amazing. The numbers are now likely to tail off but maybe 150 to 200 a week will be the long term average?

Big field in Midleton for the inaugural event

It's worth mentioning that Cork Sports Partnership plays a crucial part in getting all of the 5k parkruns in Co Cork up and running.

Tramore Valley Park... No volunteers, no parkruns! Well done to Emma Hayes who earned her 100th volunteer credit this week... and it was also her 50th parkrun!

A century of volunteer credits

If I missed anyone who passed a notable milestone like 100, 200, 250 or above parkruns then let me know.

Guest Post: Midleton Greenway parkrun ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Midleton Greenway parkrun **

Saturday 1st February 2025 marks a new departure in running in Midleton, with the launch of a new parkrun 5k for the area. This long awaited venture is an exciting development on the newly opened Midleton to Youghal Greenway. This weekend marks the end of Winter and beginning of Spring. What better way to celebrate St Brigid's Feast.

Flat course out for 2.5k and back the same way to the finish. A flatter, easier course cannot be found anywhere in the country.

I have written before of the benefits of parkruns and how they are not competitive, no prizes, and the option of staying anonymous at the finish if you so wish. They are free to enter and people of all ages and abilities are most welcome. You only ever need to register online once, for free and that's it.

In an expanding town and rapidly developing area this is a fantastic amenity to have.

Running in recent years has become a cross-ages sport, as so many people recognize the health and mental benefits of some physical exercise in the fresh air. There are social opportunities to get out and meet others, chat and smile, share some thoughts and go home a better person.

The start and finish line is where the Midleton Greenway begins next to the Railway station.

There is parking available but it is limited so some co-operation is required.
Car-pool where possible.
Walk, jog or cycle from some other parking area that you are familiar with to the starting area.
Cycle rack is right next to the start line, so your bike will be safe.
Please don’t park in some estate and be a nuisance to the residents.
Remember the Train will be working so don’t be in the way of people using this facility.

The parkrun is sharing the Greenway with others who may wish to walk, run, cycle, or do whatever leisure activity the Greenway is designed for. So please please be conscious of others who will be using the Greenway but not taking part in the 5k.

In this day and age it hardly needs saying but I will remind you, take home your litter.

The long-term prospects for this run depend on striking a balance between the Railway Company, The Local Authorities responsible for the Greenway and local residents who may be inconvenienced by this event. If you are going, then please play your part and be a Charm Ambassador.

Do not go home without saying thanks to one of the many volunteers who made this event happen.

I look forward to seeing some of you there. In my current state, I’m reduced to a volunteer role which I will gladly do. Please say hello and we might even get a photo.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend.

Top 10-mile road races in Ireland in 2024...

Before the Spring 2025 season of 10-milers gets going, let's have a look back at the most popular 10-mile road races in Ireland in 2024.

During the year, I've been tracking all of the 10-mile races in Ireland and I think I've got most if not all of them. As far as I can tell, there were about thirty-seven 10-mile races in Ireland in 2024.

The top 10 races by size are shown above and two races stick out above the rest. The Frank Duffy 10-mile in Dublin is an autumn race and with nearly 3,300 finishers is the largest one in the country. The John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile in Co Waterford is the largest spring 10-mile road race with just over 2,800 finishers.

The Irish Runner 10-mile in Dublin was another autumnal race with almost 1800 finishers and heads up a long list of events that gradually taper off in terms of numbers.

It's interesting to note that the Trim 10-mile at #4 was actually held on the same day as the Dungarvan 10m race.

Three Cork races made it into the top 10... Mallow was 7th, Kinsale was 8th and Cobh was 9th. Other notable 10-mile races in Cork & Munster making it into the top half were the Kilkishen 10m in Co Clare at #14 and the Churchtown 10-mile in north Cork at #15.

In the lower half, we have the Beat the Train 10m in Kilmeadan at #19, the Michal Rejmer 10m organised by Dooneen AC in Limerick at #21, the Gap of Dunloe 10m at #23, Tralee 10m at #25, Kilsheelan in Co Tipperary at #31 and the Mooreabbey 10m at #33.

If we go back a decade or so, the pecking order for top 10-mile races in Cork was as follows... Ballycotton #1, Dungarvan #2 and Mallow was a clear #3. If we look at 2024, the gap between the Mallow, Kinsale & Cobh is much smaller and it's no longer obvious which one might the top 10-miler in Cork in 2025.

Top spring 10-milers in Cork... The chart below shows the recent history of the top spring 10-milers in Co Cork.

Mallow... With the demise of the Ballycotton 10m, the Mallow race got a boost in numbers and was promoted to being the largest Spring 10-mile road race in Co Cork. It reached a peak in 2019 but unlike others, it never recovered post pandemic. The 2024 numbers were down about a third on the peak of 2019 and it's now just ahead of Kinsale and Cobh.

Kinsale... This one is very much the new kid on the block. It bounced back nicely after the pandemic and is now challenging for the top spot, a really good performance considering it's a relatively new race.

Cobh... The Cobh 10-mile or to give it its full title, the Sonia O'Sullivan Cobh 10-mile road race is another one that got a boost post Ballycotton. Like Kinsale, it has bounced back post pandemic and hit an all time high in 2024.

Top spring 10-milers in Cork in 2025??? ... Looking ahead, we have a new 10-miler in Midleton joining the fray and is likely to dilute the numbers for the existing Cork races. Which one will be the top Spring 10-mile in Co Cork in 2025?
