This race has been cancelled due to rain.
Message from Mick Dooley of the Cork BHAA... "The Bhaa race will not go ahead this morning . It will be rescheduled for another date."
I was shocked to hear this morning about the recent passing of Thomas Bubendorfer after an accident in Spain.
Thomas will be known to many runners from his Diary of a Rubbish Marathon Runner blog in which he outlined a diary of his activities as a runner. Starting on a journey to break three hours for the marathon, he found his real calling as an ultra endurance runner and he represented his native Austria several times.
For many years, Thomas lived near Caragh Lake in Co Kerry and took part in many of the races in Cork and Kerry and was a very active pacer for many marathons including Cork and Dublin.

** Beat The Train 10mile ** 🚃🚃
Fantastic charity race coming up on November 12th.It is run on the Wateford Greenway starting from Kilmeaden Station with a 5ml out and 5ml back loop.
Money raised goes to Down Syndrome Waterford and Down Syndrome South Kilkenny groups. It is hosted by the fantastic Saturday Road Runners gang.
So if your training is going well then this is one to test your speed late in the Year. Get some decent tempo runs for stamina and some speed intervals to improve leg turn-over and you might even Beat the Train….! 🤣
If your training has slipped then it might be worth considering. 9 weeks to go from Saturday and plenty of time to train for it. Get out for 2 nice midweek runs and every weekend add 1 mile to your long run. What could be simpler.
Starting next Monday A sample training plan.
Could also be a good stretch of the legs after DCM22 to check if they are still working. It is only 10 miles, handy one
For anyone who runs you will be happy you made the effort and I can tell you, this is one of the nicest feel-good races you will ever take part in. All for a good cause in a stunning location with the most hospitable of people.

The organsers of the 5k parkrun in Youghal have said that they hope to restart their weekly event by the end of September 2022.
The Pobalscoil na Tríonóide parkrun originally started in late October 2021 and there were 35 events until it had to be cancelled in mid-June 2022 due to building works at the school. The average number of participants over the 35 events was 66 which is pretty good.
The next closest parkrun is in Cork City so I'm sure a lot of runners in East Cork will welcome its return.
The Happy Feet running group are starting a Couch to 5k programme in Blarney on Tuesday the 13th of September 2022 and best of all, it's FREE!

One of those on the missing list was the Janssen 6k which is usually held every February.
The Cork BHAA have now announced that the Janssen 6k race will be held in Little Island on Sunday the 11th of September 2022 at 11am.
As always, the entry fee is just €5 for Cork BHAA registered runners and €10 for non-reg.
The Grant Thornton 5k in Cork City was held on Tuesday the 6th of September 2022 with 384 runners taking part. While that number in itself seems reasonable for a 5k race in Cork City, it's actually down a whopping 58% on the figure for the lasting outing in 2019.

Analysis... While we have seen some drop in race number this year compared to before the pandemic (10-20%), the drop for this one has been exceptional. Obviously the rain and wet weather didn't help. The usual date before I think was in June so perhaps a September date made a difference?
One curious stat is that just 17 runners were under 20-minutes, it's as if most of the faster runners just stayed away.
Commercial race... The Grant Thornton race is essentially a commercial race with Athletics Ireland looking to make as much money as possible out of it. Over the years, they've issued permits for other races which have made a lot of money so this is their way to cash in on the running boom.
One thing about this race however was the very high entry fee. The general idea is that companies would be prepared to pay for their employees to take part so the entry fee was set at €100 for a team of four.
They also had an individual entry fee of €35 for the 5k which was excessive and making it the most expensive 5k race in Cork to date.
There are two obvious problems with this race...
1) Price... The Cork BHAA races are also inter-company and they charge just €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-reg. Contrast that to €35 for the Grant Thornton.
2) Course... There was nothing special about the race. It was on the Centre Park Road circuit which the Cork BHAA also use for their races.
The thing about the Grant Thornton 5k race is that it is solely held for commercial reasons. Once the numbers drop below a certain level then it's gone. I've no idea what the break even point is but there must be a question mark about the future of this event.
For this weeks online jigsaw, we have a photo taken by Mick Dooley of a group before the start of the 2022 Stryker 4-mile road race in Carrigtwohill. With over 500 participants, this was one of the largest races in Cork during the month of August 2022.
