This low key 5 km road race is coming up in the village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening, the 10th of August.

As you can see from the race flyer above, the entry fee is only €3! The 5k course is pretty flat so it's good for fast times.

74 runners turned out for this years Shanagarry Christmas 5k in East Cork on Saturday the 17th of December 2016. In contrast to Cork City, the temperatures seemed a good bit milder and it was hard to believe it was mid-December running in the winter sunshine.

A total of €360 was raised for the charity GOAL.

Results & photos of the Shanagarry 5km road race...Thurs 4th Aug 2016

The annual Shanagarry 5k is one of the oldest 5km races in Cork and this year was its 30th edition. On what was a lovely dry sunny evening, the race attracted a field of 80 runners, up 35% on the 59 of 2015.

This is just a personal opinion but this low key 5k race for me is one of the best on the calendar. It's just a well run race on a reasonably fast 5k course.

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5k...Sat 20th Dec 2014

The annual Shanagarry Christmas 5k road race was held on Saturday the 20th of December and attracted a record crowd of 111 runners. This is up 18% on last years figure of 94.

Up to recently, this used to be a very small race with only about 40-50 taking part. Now the numbers have doubled and that of course means that more money is raised for charity.

This race is usually a pretty low key event with only about 60-80 runners taking part. There are no big prizes or anything like that, it's just a very simple 5k race which is usually held every year on the weekend just before Christmas day. The entry fee is usually just €3 and any proceeds go towards charity.

Out of all the local road races in the Cork area over the festive period, the Shanagarry Christmas 5k must be one of the smallest. Today, it had a record entry of 94 runners, up from the record 89 of last year.

The weather conditions were somewhat wet...in fact, it rained constantly the warm up, the whole race and the warm down! The joys of racing in Ireland ;o)

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5k road race - Sat 22nd Dec 2012

Despite the wet conditions, a record crowd of 89 runners turned out for this year's Shanagarry Christmas 5k. While it has always been a very low key race costing €3 to enter, a total of €415 was still raised for GOAL. The GOAL charity mile will be held in numerous venues throughout the country on or very close to Christmas Day. More details in a later post.

A small crowd of just 47 runners turned out for this 5k race in Shanagarry in East Cork. The mens race was won by Sean McGrath of East Cork AC in a time of 17:30. First woman home was Jessica Vonhatten of Leevale AC in 21:12.

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5k - Sat 17th Dec 2011

Weather conditions were almost perfect for this Christmas 5k race in Shanagarry in east Cork. The showers had cleared nicely leaving blue skies and winter sunshine for the race. A total of 71 runners took part which was way up on last year when only 27 took part due to all of the snow and ice.
The mens race was won by Sean McGrath of East Cork AC in a time of 15:43, managing to keep a gap of seven seconds on his fellow club member James McCarthy. In the womens race, Niamh Walsh of Leevale AC was the clear winner in a time of 19:29.

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5k road race - Fri 24th Dec 2010

This 5km road race in Shanagarry, East Cork went ahead today despite the freezing conditions. It was obvious driving down to this race that once you got over the hill between Midleton and Cloyne, there was a lot less snow and ice on the ground. The course for the race had a few slippy patches but it was more of a case of a hard frost rather than anything like the frozen crushed snow that we have closer to Cork city.

Considering that it was Christmas Eve, it probably wasn't the best day for a race and this was reflected in the low numbers. It was still however a lovely day for a race with clear blue skies and bright winter sunshine. It's really great to get out in conditions like this.

Preview of the Shanagarry Christmas 5km Road Race - Sat 18th Dec (12:30pm)

There are 2 races in Cork this weekend. On Saturday, there is the annual Shanagarry Christmas 5 km road race. On Sunday, there is the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 mile road race. First off, the preview of the Shanagarry race...

This race is usually a pretty low key event with only about 60-80 runners taking part although they did get 86 runners last year. There are no big prizes or anything like that, it's just a very simple 5k race which is usually held every year on the weekend just before Christmas day. The entry fee is €3

I have to admit that it is probably one of my favourite races in the year. I'm not sure why....maybe it's the small field, the quiet country roads, the scenic area, the tradition of it being a Christmas run or maybe it's just a combination of all of these.

Location...The race starts and finishes in the village of Shanagarry in East Cork. If you are not sure of where that it, it is on the road between Midleton and Ballycotton. See the map above. Cloyne and Ballycotton are shown for reference.

Course...See map below. You start in Shanagarry, just outside the Church (or near the finish line in the 5 mile race if you know where that is).

You run back towards Cork, passing the garage and the road junction and after a pretty flat 1 km, you take a left.

You are now onto real quiet country roads until you re-join the road to Ballycotton at about the 2.5 mile mark. Then it's left, back into Shanagarry...

...right past the garage and the 3 mile mark and the finish is in the little dip just outside the GAA club. Overall, the course is reasonably flat and there are no real hills to speak of.

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5km road race...Sat 19th Dec 2009

Despite the threat of rain with some light drizzle before the race, the skies cleared nicely and the race was run in cold but dry conditions. A record crowd of 86 turned out for this low key race with all proceeds going towards the Irish charity GOAL.
