Irish Relay Team sets a new national record in Euro Championships

The Irish relay team set a new record in the 4 x 100m relay at the European Athletic Championships in Zurich today. In the second heat, the Irish team finished in 4th place in the second heat in 43.84 seconds. That broke the old record of 43.93 seconds set in 2010.

L-R...Amy Foster, Kelly Proper, Sarah Lavin & Phil Healy of Bandon AC
That 4th place was almost enough to qualify for the final but was just outside. The last fastest losers spot from the first heat with 43.80s.

The Irish team in order of running were.....Amy Foster of Lisburn AC, Kelly Proper of Ferrybank AC, Sarah Lavin of Emerald AC and Phil Healy of Bandon AC.

In a post race interview with Phil Healy, she said..."We can’t ask for any more than that, we came out today and broke the national record, the changeovers were good, and the practicing we have been doing has been really good. We will plan for next year with the World Championships to look forward to."

The previous record of 43.93s was set in Barcelona at the European Championships and the team then was Amy Foster, Niamh Whelan, Claire Brady and Ailis McSweeney.

Race video.....It shows both heats and it's about 13 mins long. The intro to the Irish race starts about 8 min and the race at 9:30...

Results & Photos of the Cork City Sports...Tues 8th July 2014

The 63rd Cork City Sports were held at the CIT track in Bishopstown on Tuesday the 8th of July. The numbers attending seemed to be pretty much the same as last year with the stand area mostly full and plenty of people spread around the ground area as well.

The weather on the evening was sunny but there was a strong blustery wind from the north-west. As well as keeping things a bit on the cool side, it resulted in a strong headwind in the back straight and a tailwind in the home straight.

Overall, there was a very good atmosphere with the crowd really getting behind the Irish athletes.

These are a few of the performances that stood out for me...

Mens 400m hurdles....The Irish record holder 22 year old Thomas Barr finished 3rd in a time of 49.95 seconds.  This was about 1 second outside his best of 48.90 seconds which he set in Geneva last month. Any result under 50 seconds in those conditions is really an excellent performance.

3 Barr Thomas                  92    IRL      49.95

In the womens 3000m, Fionnuala Britton finished 3rd in a time of 9:01.01. For much of the race, Fionnuala was at the front with Helen Clitheroe sitting behind looking comfortable. Eventually Hall and Duncan took over at the front and the field began to string out behind. It looked as if Fionnuala was beginning to fade away in the penultimate lap but then really pushed for home with about 300m to go and passed Clitheroe and then Penney to finish third.

Womens 100m...In the womens 100m, Phil Healy of Bandon AC was on fire running a time of 11.36 seconds. A significant factor here was the tailwind of 3 metres per second which for sprinters makes a huge difference. The legal limit is 2 metres per second so any times set don't count as personal bests or as records. However note Phil's time....11.36 seconds. The Irish national record is 11.40 seconds. Phil is still only 20 years old so the chances of her breaking the Irish record in the future must be a real possibility.

Mens 3000m race walk....One of the top performances of the evening was that of Alex Wright in the mens 3000m walk. Alex used to be one of the top race walkers in the UK and declared for Ireland at the start of this year. He is a part of Rob Heffernan's training group in Cork and they are often seen out on the roads locally training. Alex's time of 10:58.47 was a new Irish record and beats the previous record of 11:10.02 which was set back in 2002 by Rob Heffernan. Rob who is of course the world champion over 50 kms also broke his old record.

Womens 100m hurdles...In the womens 100m hurdles, Sarah Lavin from Limerick finished second and only two one-hundredths of a second behind the winner. She possibly could have won except for knocking a hurdle in the middle of the race. Sarah's time of 13.30 seconds was very close to her personal best of 13.23 seconds which she set in Geneva last month. The following wind for this race was 1.7 metres per second so it was ok for records.

Phil Healy of Bandon AC sets a new PB in Geneva...

There was a large Irish contingent of athletes at the competition in Geneva last Switzerland. One of those who set a personal best was Phil Healy of Bandon AC. In the womens 100m, the 19 year old Cork woman set a new personal best time of 11.53 seconds, improving on her previous best of 11.63. That moves her up to 7th place on the Irish all time list.

The criteria for qualifying for the European Athletics Championships this summer are...

a) An athlete must achieve an “A” Performance Standard within the Qualification Period for the particular event  on, at least, one occasion.
b) Development Athlete Selections will consist of individuals who are identified/carded by Athletics Ireland as ‘Development’ athletes and have minimally achieved two (2) “B” standards within the Qualification Period.

The 'A' standard for womens 100m is 11.4s while the 'B' standard is 11.6s.

Phil actually ran inside the 'B' standard twice last Saturday. In the heats, she ran 11.53 and ran 11.56 in the final.

I presume this may be enough to see her getting selected for the European Championships?

Sarah Lavin from Limerick finishes 3rd at British Indoor Champs

Sarah Lavin of Emerald AC / UCD AC finished 3rd in the womens 60m hurdles at the British Athletics Indoor championships in Sheffield on Sunday, February 9th.

Sarah's time of 8.25 seconds was also a personal best and it now moves her from 3rd to 2nd in the Irish all time standings. The chart below shows the relative times of the top 10 fastest. As you can see, there is a small incremental step between each of the times but Derval O'Rourke's time of 7.84 seconds is in a completely different league altogether. This was set in Moscow in 2006 when she won the World Indoor Championship title aged 24.

It's worth noting that Sarah Lavin is still only 19 years old and has a bright future in athletics. The fundraising page for her athletics career can be seen at http://www.ntrai.com/index.cfm/crowd-funding-projects/sarah-lavin/

Irish athletes look for funding for the Rio Olympics in 2016

As anyone who follows Irish athletics will know, funding for individual athletes is always an issue. Every year, the Irish Sports Council give out grants but only the very top international athletes like Rob Heffernan can hope to get the maximum amount. For younger up and coming athletes, their grants, if any, are a lot smaller and money is always an issue. They have the dilemma of trying to do the training required to reach an international standard and still be able to support themselves.

An interesting development on the Internet in the last year or two has been the use of sites like Kickstarter whereby people are asked to fund various business ideas and projects. The concept is called 'crowd sourcing'.

With those two facts in mind, some of Ireland's up and coming stars are now looking for funding for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Brother and sister Thomas and Jessie Barr from Waterford are top Irish hurdlers. Thomas put in some great performances in 2013 and came within five one-hundredths of a second of equaling the Irish 400m hurdles record. Jessie is the second fastest woman on the Irish all time list for the 400m hurdles.

This is their fundraising video...

This is the Barr's fundraising page.

Sarah Lavin from Limerick is just 19 years old and is already the 3rd fastest woman in the 100m hurdles on the Irish all time list.

Sarah Lavin...Silver medalist at the recent European Athletics Junior Championships

At the Irish Senior Track and Field Championships in Dublin last weekend, Sarah Lavin of Emerald AC in Limerick won the Gold in the womens 100m hurdles in a winning time of 13.61 seconds.

Just one week earlier on the 20th of July, 19 year old Sarah won the Silver medal in the final of the European Athletics Junior Championships in Rieti, Italy. Sarah's time of 13.34 seconds was a new Irish Junior record for the event and she is currently the third fastest on the all time list for Irish women.

The gap between second and third in the final was just two one-hundredths of a second...

The race in full......(Actual race starts at 4:00)

Post race interview...

Medal ceremony...

So how does Sarah Lavins time of 13.34 seconds compare to Derval O'Rourkes times?

In 2000 when Derval was aged 19, her best time was 13.61 seconds. In 2003 aged 22, Derval broke the 13 second barrier when she ran 12.96 seconds. Derval's best time of 12.65 seconds was in 2010 when she was 29 years old.

They are of course two completely different athletes and there is no guarantee that Sarah can reach Derval's world class times but the potential is certainly there. It will be interesting to see how she progresses towards the 13 second barrier over the next few years.

Results and Photos of the 2013 Cork City Sports...Tues 2nd July 2013

Conditions were pretty much ideal for the Cork City Sports this year. The wet weather that was present in the morning had well cleared by evening time and the wind had dropped to a gentle breeze. A fair size crowd were on hand to watch the event with the stand area being pretty full with the ground area less so. While it was maybe not as busy as last year, it was certainly a lot busier than the weekend event of previous years.

The best thing about the Cork City Sports is of course that it's live. You get to notice things that you won't see on TV and you get a different perspective on the speeds that the athletes are running. Watching and having the noise of a crowd does of course makes for it's own unique atmosphere which adds to the event, something that's hard to convey on TV. The biggest problem of course is that there's no action replay! ;o)

If there was one disappointment on the night then it was that some more of the big names in Irish athletics were not in attendance. I know from looking at a multitude of websites on sports that athletics is very much a minority interest. Other than the odd occasion when an Irish athlete wins a medal at a major championships, Irish athletics can be largely ignored. There was no better example of this recently when there was no coverage by RTE of the European Athletics 1st League in Dublin yet Portugese TV thought it important enough to provide a live feed on their website. The likes of the Cork City Sports and the Morton Games in Dublin are a great way for Irish athletes to connect with the general public and they deserve all the support that they can get.

Here are a selection of the results from the evening...

In the mens 100m, one performance to note here was Marcus Lawler. Just 18 years old and having just finished his Leaving Cert exams this year, he is already the 6th fastest Irish man ever on the record books. One to watch for the future.

In the mens High Jump, 17 year old David Cussen from Old Abbey AC in Cork finished in 5th place overall. He cleared 1.90, 1.95 and  2.00 metres on his first attempt. With the bar raised to 2.05m, he cleared it on his 3rd attempt, just one cm short of his personal best of 2.06m. When the bar was raised to 2.10 metres, David failed on the first two attempts but cleared it on his last and final jump setting a new personal best in the process. This moves him up to joint 15th highest Irish man ever and he is still only 17.

In the womens 100m sprint, two of the big Irish names went out due to false starts.
