Results of the Ballinhassig 4 Mile Road Race - Thurs 17th March 2011
A record crowd turned out for this 4 mile road race in Ballinhassig on St.Patricks Day. No doubt the fact that the event also doubled up as the Cork AAI County Road Championships helped to swell the numbers but this race has grown year on year. Back in 2007, it attracted just 87 runners and today, that figure was 257 (2008-99, 2009-189, 2010-194).
The mens race was won by Wieslaw Sosnowski of Eagle AC in a time of 20:56 while Chris Harrington of Leevale AC was just 7 seconds behind in 2nd place in 21:03. Just 6 seconds behind Chris was Danny Smith of Ballynonty AC in 21:09 after making the trip down from Tipperary to claim 3rd place.

(L to R...Emma Murphy, Ann-Marie Holland and Michelle Nolan just after the 1 mile mark)
In the ladies section, Emma Murphy of St.Finbarrs AC was first woman home in a time of 24:12, winning her 2nd road race in 5 days. In 2nd place was Ann-Marie Holland of Eagle AC in 24:41 while Michelle Nolan of Midleton AC was just 9 seconds behind in 3rd place in a time of 24:50.

Preview of the Rising Sun AC 4 mile Road Race (Ballinhassig) - Thurs 17th Mar (11am)
Rising Sun Athletic Club are holding their annual 4 mile road race next Thursday, the 17th of March at 11am in the village of Ballinhassig. If you are not sure of where that is then from Cork City, just take the N71 Cork / Bandon road south from the roundabout on the South Ring Road and look for the signposts on the other side of the hill. Ballinhassig is only a few hundred metres off the main road.
The registration point is the Marian Hall in the middle of Ballinhassig. There is plenty of parking alongside the hall itself.
Race info...Rising Sun A.C. 7th ANNUAL Paddy Desmond Memorial 4 Mile Road Race....Thursday March 17th 2011th at 11.00am...In Ballinhassig....Race H.Q. The course...The race starts and finishes about 300 metres away from the Marian Hall.
The first section of the race is a tough uphill drag as you gain height and pass underneath the N71 Cork to Bandon road.
On your right, you can see the road where you'll come back for the finish but for now, you stay on the road and continue to climb until roughly 0.7 miles when you reach the top of the hill...
As you can see on the left of the road, you are now well above the valley floor. A tough start.
From here you turn left, out onto the main N71 road and head back. From about the 2 mile mark to about 3.5 miles, the course is flat and going slightly uphill at the end as you run inside a very wide hard shoulder on the road....(see above)
After about 3.5 miles, the road begins to climb and the hard shoulder begins to narrow. Soon, you reach a bridge and you can see the road you passed under at the start of the race.
Just after this, you turn left and left again...
...and you now have a downhill run all the way to the finish line.
Overall...Due to the hill at the start, it's probably not the fastest of 4 mile road races. However considering that it is on St.Patricks Day and how easy it is to get to from Cork City, it always attracts a good crowd.
If you want to have a look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. Here is the LINK.

Results of the Rising Sun 1 mile road race - Sun 16th May 2010
Just under 50 runners turned out for this charity 1 mile road race over a straight section of road near Ballinhassig. The photo above shows the start line on a lovely summer evening waiting for the start.
By the way, the runner on the far right is Ned Ramsell of Midleton AC who was running in his 3rd road race of the day having run earlier in a 5 km race in Villerstown and a 5 km charity run in East Ferry near Midleton. Obviously, one wasn't enough! :o)

Close finish to the 2010 Rising Sun Straight Mile Race...
Race report by Denis Looney of Eagle AC
Rising Sun 1 mile race, Ballinhassig.
48 runners turned out for this race on a beautiful summers evening. It’s a straight mile, with quarter miles marked on the road. You sign on at the finish and jog to the start. The starter drives off in his car in front of you from the start line and beeps the horn to set you off. Being a 1 mile sprint it’s a case of going out fast and hanging on.
To be honest you wouldn't notice any climbs or dips. However for the sake of filling out this Race Report, the first half mile is slightly downhill, then slightly uphill, and flat for the last half mile. Then you cross the finish line.
There were loads of spot prizes at the finish, it was like the Late Late Show with one for everyone in the audience. With all proceeds going to the Lavanagh Centre this was a charity race of a different kind.

Preview of the Rising Sun AC 4 mile Road Race (Ballinhassig) - Wed 17th Mar (11am)
Rising Sun Athletic Club are holding their annual 4 mile road race next Wednesday, the 17th of March at 11am. The registration point is the Marian Hall in the middle of Ballinhassig which is just off the main N71 Cork to Bandon road. There is plenty of parking alongside the hall itself.
Race info...Here is some of the info from the Rising Sun A.C. website ...6th ANNUAL Paddy Desmond Memorial ...4 Mile Road Race ...Wednesday March 17th at 11.00am ...In Ballinhassig....Race H.Q. Note that there are extra prizes this year compared to last, notably the inclusion of a M35 section.
The course...The race starts about 300 metres away from the Marian Hall. The first section of the race is a tough and uphill drag as you gain height and pass underneath the N71 Cork to Bandon road. Once the hill flattens out, you are on to the old Bandon road and this road is fairly quiet at this time of the morning. There are a few small drags along this section but nothing compared to the inital one at the start. You run into the village of Halfway and then left and out onto the main N71 road. From about the 2 mile mark to about 3.5 miles, the course is flat and going slightly uphill at the end as you run inside a very wide hard shoulder on the road.

Overall...Due to the hill at the start, it's probably not the fastest of 4 mile road races. Coming just 4 days before the Ballycotton '10', it's certainly not the best time for a race but that's just the way the dates fell this year. If you are going for a fast time in Ballycotton then perhaps you should run this one at an easy pace and save yourself for Sunday.
If you want to have a look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. Here is the LINK.

Results of the Rising Sun 'Straight Mile'...Sun 17th May 2009The rain held off just long enough for this 1 mile road race near Ballinhassig to the south-west of Cork City at 7pm. A total of 62 runners took part, an increase of 16 on last year's figure of 46. A few hardy souls mainly from East Cork also made an appearance despite having run in the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic earlier in the day ;o).
With most entrants giving more than the minimum entry, no doubt several hundred Euro was raised for the Lavanagh Centre.

Preview of the Rising Sun 'Straight Mile' road race - Sun 17th May (7pm)
There are 2 races on this weekend. The main one in Munster is the John Treacy 10 mile Classic in Villierstown, West Waterford at 12:30pm on Sunday, the 17th of May. More information about this race on the Running in Munster website.
The other race is the Rising Sun race near Ballinhassig. This is one of the more unusual races on the local race calendar in that it is only 1 mile in lenght and it is dead straight. As for the location, I would descibe as being in the middle of nowhere!! It's a really quiet area, very little traffic, good road surface and surrounded by fields...in fact, an ideal spot for a race! ;o) I often run along sections of this road as part of my long training runs and I have rarely seen any traffic there.
Directions...
Probably the easiest way to get there from Cork is to take the main road for Kinsale over the Airport Hill. After Five Mile Bridge, take the 2nd right. Keep going straight and you'll get there.

Registration...
All the registration, results, etc take place at the finishing line of the race. There is no venue available so entries will be taken at Jimmy Murray's car. The race is purely a fun run but they will be giving out some prizes and some spots. The minimum entry fee is €5 and all entry fees go to the Lavanagh Centre. The race runs from east to west and there is an overall fall of ground from the start to the finish.

Course...
You sign on near the finish and run 1 mile up to the start point. The course is initially downhill and then flat. If you want to have a closer look or get your bearings, I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website.

Overall.......it's not a serious race but it can be interesting if you want to test yourself and see how fast you can run a mile in. In terms of fast courses, they don't get any better.

Results of the Rising Sun 4 mile road race - Tues 17th March 2009
This race took place on a lovely sunny spring morning with a slight easterly breeze...nice conditions for a short race. The big suprise was the number of runners however....194!! To put that into perspective, it's worth looking back over the results of the last few years...
2006 (5k course)......65 entries
2007 (Present 4m course)...87 entries
2008.......99 entries
If you had to guess beforehand, you might expect maybe 100-120 entries for the race today but 194! Why??? Perhaps the fact that there was no local race last Sunday and nothing on next Sunday might have helped. But even allowing for that, 194 runners for what is supposed to be one of the smaller local races is a suprise. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are like for the Cork BHAA UCC 10k on the 5th of April.
While we're on that subject, I may as well give it a plug as a certain well known local runner is constantly reminding me about it ;o) She gave me a full description today of the new Dell 'mini' laptop that they will have as a prize in a draw for all runners. Course...out the Lee road and in the Straight road. I'll preview it here a few days beforehand.
Photos........Paudie Birmingham has photos of the race on this Picasa gallery. Paudie also has his own photo website with pictures of local races.
So, on the todays results.......

Rising Sun AC 4 mile Road Race (Ballinhassig) - Tues 17th Mar (11am) Rising Sun Athletic Club are holding their annual 4 mile road race next Tuesday, the 17th of March at 11am. The registration point is the Marian Hall in the middle of Ballinhassig which is just off the main N71 Cork to Bandon road. There is plenty of parking alongside the hall itself.
Race Flyer...Here is some of the info off their race flyer...Rising Sun A.C. ...5th ANNUAL Paddy Desmond Memorial ...4 Mile Road Race ...Tuesday March 17th at 11.00am ...In Ballinhassig....Race H.Q. Marian Hall (lower Ballinhassig) Awards 1st 2nd and 3rd Senior Men and Senior Ladies , 1st 3 Men O 40,45,50,55,60 and 65. , 1st 3 Women O 35,40,45,50,55 and 60. , 1st Wheelchair Athlete. , Entry Fee 8 Euro , Enquiries to Jim Murray 086 3320461. (Flyer HERE)
The course...The race starts about 300 metres away from the Marian Hall.
After about 3.5 miles, the road begins to climb and the hard shoulder begins to narrow. Soon, you reach a bridge and you can see the road you passed under at the start of the race. Just after this, you turn left and you now have a downhill run all the way to the finish.Overall...Due to the hill at the start, it's probably not the fastest of 4 mile road races. But seeing as how it is 9 days after Ballycotton and 3 weeks before the UCC 10 km race, it's a good excuse to get out and stretch those legs! In fairness to the members of Rising Sun AC, they are very good at supporting all of the local races so now is your chance to return the compliment....Ballinhassig...11am.
If you want to have a look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. Here is the LINK.

Results of the Rising Sun AC 'Straight Mile' road race - Fri 9th May 2008
Nearly 50 runners took part in this small yet novel road race near Ballinhassig. It was mainly a charity event and approx €500 was collected which was excellent. The conditions were a lot nicer than the previous evening for the Pfizers race...dry, bright, mild with hardly a puff of wind. It's a strange distance to race...you are just getting going and you have to stop! Good excuse to get out though ;o)
So, onto the results, you'll find them on the Rising Sun AC website. Click HERE.

Preview of the Rising Sun 'Straight Mile' road race - Fri 9th May (8pm)This is one of the more unusual races on the local race calendar in that it is only 1 mile in lenght and it is dead straight.
You sign on at a car near the finish line. Here is the info as supplied by John O'Riordan of Rising Sun AC...
All the registration, results, etc take place at the finishing line of the race. There is no venue available so entries will be taken at Jimmy Murray's car. The race is purely a fun run but we will be giving out some prizes and some spots. All entry fees go to the Lavanagh Centre. The race runs from east to west.(hopefully the wind stays easterely). There is an overall fall of ground from start to finish.
Course...
You sign on near the finish and run 1 mile up to the start point. The course is initially downhill and then flat. When I was running part of the route last Wednesday, I noticed that they have the half, three-quarter and finish points painted on the road. If you want to have a closer look or get your bearings, I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website.

Results of the Rising Sun 4 mile road race (Ballinhassig) - Easter Sunday, 23rd of March 2008.Just 1 shy of 100 turned out for this 4 mile road race in Ballinhassig just South of Cork. It was a lovely morning..bright and sunny and the big hill to the North protected us from the worst of the breeze.
The race...
What a start! Uphill from the off. Even the guys out at the front seemed to be in agreement to jog to the top of the hill first, then start racing! Once it's out of the way though, it's not a bad course. Some drags but nothing too serious.
So on to the results...

But seeing as how it is 2 weeks after Ballycotton and 2 weeks before the UCC 10 km race, it's a good excuse to get out and stretch those legs! In fairness to the members of Rising Sun AC, they are very good at supporting all of the local races so now is your chance to return the compliment....Ballinhassig...11am.
If you want to have a look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. Here is the LINK.
