Results of the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race...Mon 1st 2013

A total of 134 people turned out for this year's Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race in NW Cork, an increase of about 40% on last year's figure of 96. One interesting feature of the results is that it seems to have been a high quality field with no fewer than 25 people running faster than 6 minutes per mile pace. Perhaps the strong easterly breeze behind the runners for 4 miles was a factor here?

Preview of the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race...Mon 1st Apr 2013

The Jack O'Keeffe 4 mile road race is coming up in North-West Cork on Easter Monday, the 1st of April.

This 4 mile road race starts in Boherbue and finishes in the village of Kiskeam. As you can see from the map below, it's a central location for a lot of people...i.e. N Cork, Mid and N Kerry, W Limerick.

This map below shows the exact location on the R577 road....

If you are coming from the direction of Mallow then take the N72 road to Killarney and turn off right at this junction...

Follow this road to Boherbue and you'll see the Co-Op store on the far side of the town where the race will start. Keep driving and 4 miles later, you'll see the entrance road to the local GAA grounds as you enter the outskirts of Kiskeam..

The race is being organised by Gneeveguilla AC, one of the largest athletic clubs in Kerry. The entry fee is €15 on the day and there is a huge array of prizes on offer. These are usually in the form of vouchers for the Supervalue store in Boherbue and are pretty generous. The prize for the first man and woman is €300 each.

Plenty of parking available at race HQ in Kiskeam
As this is a point to point race, there will be a bus available to take runners to the start line in Boherbue. If you are going as part of a group in a few cars then it might be as well to arrange your own transport......leaving one car in Kiskeam and drive back to Boherbue.

Note that the race starts at 3pm. It would be advisable to arrive in plenty of time to allow for the bus transport, especially if it has to make more than one trip.

As far as I know, a cotton T-shirt will be given to all finishers at the end of the race.

There will be the usual refreshments of tea, coffee, sandwiches, etc afterwards as well.

A full preview of the course can be seen HERE

Prizes......again a reminder......if you win a prize then make sure you spend it in Boherbue before you drive home.

Races on Monday 25th of April 2011

There are 2 road races coming up on Easter Monday in Cork.....the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile and a 10km race in Clonakilty.

Boherbue to Kishkeam 4 mile road race...Mon 25th Apr...2pm......You enter first in the hall in Kiskeam and then you get a lift to the start in Boherbue which is 4 miles away. I don't have any details on this years event. In previous years, it was €15 to enter and there was a cotton t-shirt given out as well.

The course is on the R577 which is the main road from this part of Cork to Castleisland / Tralee. I did this course a few years ago and found it to be very busy. There is one main hill to get over on the route but nothing major. You could expect to get a reasonable time considering that the 2nd half is mostly downhill but it's unlikely that you'll make up what you lost on the uphill section. Just watch the traffic!

In previous years, some of the prizes have been vouchers for a shop in Boherbue. If this is the case and you are lucky enough to win one, make sure you spend it before you leave the area.

Clonakilty 10k....11am...
This is the 2nd year of this race and should attract a lot more runners than last year. The run will be held at 11am on Monday 25th April 2011. Entry € 15 with part of the entry going to local Simon Communities and Primary Schools. Registration between 9:30 and 10:30.

The race route is to the south of the town of Clonakilty and should be reasonably flat.
The course will be certified to 10k according to the organisers.

Results of the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race - Mon 13th Apr 2009

The 'Jack O'Keeffe' Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race took place on Monday, the 13th of April in mild and sunny conditions. A total of 90 runners took part in the race, an increase of 18 on last year's figure of 72 runners.

This was my first time doing this particular race and I'm sure there are many others who never tried it and might wonder what it was like. First of all, the race is in a lovely part of the county and you have the backdrop of the mountains to the south. Once you register, they use a bus and several cars to take the runners from Kiskeam to the start line in Boherbue 4 miles away. From there, you run back to the finish in Kiskeam.

The course....
To be honest and blunt about it, there is a problem with the course. The race takes place on the R577 which is a busy road that is a major route for traffic in this area. It really is not safe. At one stage in the race, I found myself running in the middle of the road with stopped traffic on the right and a creamery tanker passing me on the left...all of this on what is a reasonably narrow road. I know other runners further back had a similiar experience. You really have to ask what's the point in having a route with the start 4 miles away and using the busiest road in the area when there are plenty of minor roads to the north and south of Kiskeam which could be used for a nice quiet looped route with the start and finish near the village. Perhaps when the first race took place 15-20 years ago, the road was quiet but in 2009, that's no longer the case.

I don't want to sound too critical as the other aspects of the race were fine. The club had a fine spread afterwards and the results and prizes were given out promptly. As races go, the organisation was as good as other races. However, having creamery tankers and cars weaving around runners along the course really isn't on, especially when there are safer options.
Kiskeam is in a nice part of the county and has the potential to attract a large entry from both Cork and Kerry. However, the expensive entry fee and the current course will not encourage runners to make the trip. There are plenty of other cheaper and safer races to choose from at this time of year.

Preview of the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 Mile Road Race...Mon 13th Apr 2009
This 4 mile race takes place in north-west Cork on Easter Monday at 2pm. This is a small race and usually attracts around 60-70 runners. It may not be the best day for a race seeing as how it is the day after Kilnaboy but perhaps it might be of interest to anyone not making the trip to Co.Clare.

Getting there.......
Boherbue and Kiskeam are located about 30 kms west of Mallow in north-west Cork. From Mallow, take the N72 towards Killarney. After you pass the tun-off left for Millstreet, look out for the turn-off to the right, the R576 for Boherbue and continue on towards Kiskeam.

Registration......
The entry fee is €12 which is expensive although that does include a t-shirt. There are also plenty of category prizes which might explain the high entry fee. You register in the Community centre in Kiskeam and then a bus will take you to the start in Boherbue.

Course......
Starting in Boherbue (~190m asl), you lose height at first until the lowest point on the course near the 1 mile mark (~170m). From there, it is a gentle climb to the highest point at around 2.5 miles (~215m asl) and then there is a gentle downhill section for the last 1.5 miles into Kiskeam (~180m asl).

Flyer....
A flyer for the race which is organised by Gneeveguilla AC is available HERE.
