Notice...Emer Casey 10km road race - Sun 24th May 2015
This popular 10k road race in Youghal in East Cork is coming up on Sunday, the 24th of May 2015 at 1:30pm.
Here is some more info from the organisers...2015 sees the Emer Casey 10K return to its original route. While the 2014 route had its attraction of a very fast first 2miles, the call from runners to revert to the old tried and tested route was immense. There’s a certain appeal to starting down the newline, with the wind in your sails, adrenaline flowing, running a 7min mile (when your normal pace is 8) and generally feeling like Usain Bolt! Then it’s down by the Youghal Lighthouse, past Green Park and under the Clock Tower – one of Youghal's most historic attractions. At this point, the crowds of supporters are in full voice and you can hear the echo of the runners feet as they race under the tower. A sea of club colours, the roar of the crowd, a swift loop of the town now its homeward bound back up the lighthouse hill. Magnificent views over Youghal Bay distract you through the pain barrier allowing you to finish in style at the front strand. The biggest question from here is whether to take a dip in the sea post finish line or to jump straight on the bus for a well deserved shower, cup of tea and post race analysis at Pobailscoil.
*****
Other changes...
1) Every entrant will receive an Emer Casey 10k dry fit top.
2) All runners must be over 18.
All proceeds go towards the Emer Casey Foundation, a charity which helps fund cancer research.
Here is a small extract from their website which describes what the race and the fundraising is all about...
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancy in the western world. The poor survival of ovarian cancer patients can be attributed to 1) lack of standardised screening test 2) late presentation of disease 3) high rate of recurrence 4) development of chemoresistance and 5) poorly understood disease biology.
The Emer Casey Foundation is dedicated to providing funding to the DISCOVARY consortium to secure the best independent research to detect the early signs of Uterine/Ovarian cancer. It is also currently sponsoring three Phd Fellowship students, whose focus is in the areas of chemoresistance, cancer stem cells, circulating tumour cells and the body's immune response to cancer. The scientists have already identified a panel of proteins that can be identified in the blood of ovarian cancer patients. They have developed a near patient testing device to assess a patient's response to chemotherapy and are currently working on new ways to isolate circulating tumour cells in a patient's blood.
Pictured is Emer Casey Gynaecological Oncology Nurse Specialist Vickie Cleary with Sonia O'Sullivan at the recent Great Island 10 mile road race in Cobh. Sonia is the patron of the charity and Vickie is the nurse based on CUMH and being funded by the Emer Casey Foundation.
Race HQ on the day will be at Pobalscoil Na TrionĂ³ide which is just off the Youghal By-Pass so access won't be an issue. Considering the potential catchment area, it should attract a good sized crowd...

500 plus runners take part in Emer Casey races in Melbourne, Australia
On the 18th of May, the Emer Casey Memorial 10k race in Youghal attracted a large field of 570 runners. In addition to this race, there are other Emer Casey events organised in London and in Australia to raise funds for cancer research.
Last weekend, the Emer Casey 5k and 10k races were held in Melbourne, Australia and attracted a field of over 500 runners. In the 10k race, Sonia O'Sullivan (#571) was the winner while Sonia's daughter Sophie took the title in the 5k event.
MENS 5K... 1 Beau Lang 16:44.9 // 2 Steven Griffin 17:49.8 // 3 Bradley Serry 18:03.3
WOMENS 5K...1 Sophie O'Sullivan 19:15.0 // 2 Jane Hemmings 19:43.5 // 3 Amy Cornell 21:13.9
MENS 10 K... 1 Luke Burns 35:56.6 M // 2 Steven Bonfadini 36:21.8 // 3 Jacob Nolan 37:09.8
WOMENS 10K...1 Stacy Bolger 38:27.4 // 2 Sonia O'Sullivan 39:43.1 // 3 Lesley Turnbull 40:46.9
Report from Sonia O'Sullivan.....We had the Emer Casey Melbourne twin event on last Sunday in lovely sunning conditions at the Monash University Campus. This is the 7th annual Emer Casey fun run in Melbourne and we have grown from 17 runners in the first year to a record 500 plus runners yesterday (Run4Ec.com.au) with the race broken down into 5km and 10km events.
It is an amazing turnout with big representation from the growing Irish community in Melbourne. We had chip timing for the first time, sponsorship from the Melbourne Rose of Tralee and Emerald Travel so we were able to have t-shirts to early bird entries and focus on raising more funds and awareness of Ovarian Cancer and the Emer Casey foundation around the world.
The course itself is not a typical road race, there are 2 x 5km laps on a section of the Monash university campus that cross playing fields, and weave around some skinny paths and back around even more fields so multi-terrain, not the fastest course but we believe this is a fun run and we want everyone to enjoy the day out, bring their families and get everyone to join in the fun. Here for a good time, not a fast time.
Best Wishes...Sonia
