Guest Post: Mayfield Goes Racing in 1971... by Richard Forrest

Up until the year 2000, there were two national athletics associations in Ireland... BLE and NACA. Back in 1971, NACA held their 10-mile Championships in Mayfield in Cork City. Thanks to Richard  Forrest for the following piece.

Mayfield Goes Racing in 1971

Sunday, October 17th 1971 (all of 50 years ago) saw a large gathering at Mayfield when the local athletics club, Clannn Éireann hosted the All-Ireland 10-mile Road Racing Championship. The event was run over three laps of the Mayfield – Banduff - Fox and Hounds - Dillon’s Cross -Mayfield course.

Among the entries were two former national marathon champions in Jimmy Hughes and Noel Ramsbottom. While Cork’s hopes rested on John O’Brien (Ballymore AC), the former national 15-mile champion and Williie Webb (Rising Sun AC). There were dark horses among the runners from Éire Óg AC and Geraldines AC (London) who had preformed so well in the All-Ireland Senior Cross-Country.

Mayfield in the 1970's

As well as individual medals, there were three team prizes also, guaranteed to make it an interesting race. In conjunction to the main event, a boys under-17 race covered one lap of a course starting at Mayfield, going through the Sisk building site and joining the 10-mile course at O’Callaghan’s Garage on the Banduff Road. Boys and girls under-15 raced over the Lower Mayfield – Iona Park course but the event with biggest draw and, perhaps, the most excitement were the boys and girls under-12 and under-14 races confined to local schools.

Heats in those events were run on Saturday with the finals on Sunday. Twenty-five athletes competed in the national championship at Mayfield that day and a ”superbly fit John O’Brien ran the opposition into the ground”. He finished the ten miles 2 mins 45 secs ahead of his clubmate Mick Kinsella in a time of 54 mins 3 secs on, it has to be said, a tough course and in rough weather.

Willie Webb took the bronze edging out John Fox (Brothers Pearse, Dublin). A special word of praise went to 56-year old Bill McAvoy (Timahoe AC, Portlaoise) who came in 16 th . Millstreet and Ballymore (near Cobh) dominated the underage categories but in the confined boys under-12s the first three were T. Clarke, M. Mulroy and D. Crowley and in the girls, N. Nagle, S. Brett ad G. Hurley.

Addendum: Additional info from Jimmy Murray... "Clann Eireann AC active in the Mayfield area, late 60s to mid 70s., main men there were Bill and Jack Keniry and Eoin Dorney, all now deceased, this was an annual fixture as a non championship event for some years while the club was active, a number of the runners are still with us inc. the first and second on that day, the starter was Paddy Desmond RIP., later President NACAI."

Addendum #2: Additional info from Richard Forrest... "James (Jim) Hughes was NACA All-Ireland marathon champion in 1968 and 1969. The race in 1969 was in Killarney and he won in a time of 2:40.
Hughes was a secondary school teacher from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan and ran with the Brothers Pearse Club in Dublin. Ramsbottom was with Tinahoe A.C. in Co. Laois."

Notice...Great Island 10 mile & 4 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 12th Apr 2015

Another big 10 mile road race coming up in Cork is the Great Island 10 in Cobh on Sunday, the 12th of April 2015 at 10:30am. Last year, they got 573 runners out and it looks likely to be equally popular again this year.

All of the proceeds from this race go towards the Irish Cancer Society. When this race was first set up in 2010, the organisers had a target of raising €100,000 in the space of 5 years. In 2013, they hit the €100k mark one year early. The aim now is to build on that success and to continue to raise much needed funds for this charity.

One major change this year will be the inclusion of a 4 mile race. In previous years, this was a 5k fun run but it will be a properly measured and timed road race this year. Anyone considering this shouldn't be put off thinking it's just for serious runners. It's open to everyone...runners, joggers and walkers...the whole idea is to raise as much money for charity.

Entries....You can enter online HERE ...€11.50 for the 4 mile and €21.50 for the 10 mile.

The race website is HERE.

THE IRISH CANCER SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT APRIL 12th 2015 @ 10.30AM, COBH, CO CORK

Web: www.greatisland10.com

The sixth annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ takes place on April 12th 2015 at 10.30am and once again it is being arranged for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society, with special emphasis on Palliative Care.  A new 4 Mile Road Race will also take place on the same day for those less inclined to run the 10 Mile.  If all the above are not for you and you still want to be part of the day then come along and join us in our Sponsored Walk leaving at 10.00am from the Community Centre or alternatively hold a fundraiser e.g. cake sale, coffee morning, pancake afternoon and contact us for a sponsor card. This is a great family day out while also raising awareness to the cause.  All events will finish at the GPO in the centre of the town to disco music.  For more details on any of the above please visit our website

This year the run takes on an extra dimension with the introduction of our 4 Mile Road Race which will start at Super Value @ 10.45am  We hope to see this grow over the coming years but this is only possible with your support.

Our very own Sonia O Sullivan along with Cork Footballer, Graham Canty have both over the years leant great support to this race. For that we are very grateful.

The feedback from those taking part over the last couple of years has been extremely positive and reflects very favourably on the race itself, the scenery that Cobh has to offer and the support the runners receive from local residents. All this has combined to make this event a very enjoyable experience for all involved.

GREAT CAUSE, GREAT COURSE, GREAT CHALLENGE

The object of this exercise is to raise as much money as possible to ensure that the Palliative Care service is available for those unfortunate enough to need it.
Palliative care offers cancer sufferers the opportunity to spend their remaining time in the relative comfort of their own homes surrounded by those they love while ensuring them the dignity and privacy that only a home can offer.  It is impossible to put a price on such a service  and it’s free.

We are looking for people to run, walk, help with stewarding or hold fundraisers for us. Sponsorship cards are available from sonyaomurphy@gmail.com and she can also be contacted on 087 7904895.
Anyone with any inquires can contact Roslyn Crotty on 087 1327557

11 year old Maggie Sillet from Cork wins 2k race in Mount Juliet

We're all over the place on the blog this week....from 9 year olds running 5k's to 80 year old running half-marathons. This time, it's back to the other end of the spectrum again and something a bit more local. While the blog concentrates on adults running in races, it's important to acknowledge some of the up and coming local talent as well.

Well done to 11 year old Maggie Sillett from Ballymore Cobh AC who won a 2k race in Mount Juliet in Kilkenny today in a time of 7m 11s. Maggie is of course following on the footsteps of Sonia O'Sullivan who won many juvenile races for the club.

Blog Post from Sonia O'Sullivan...The Early Days Pt.2

Sonia O'Sullivan is of course known to everyone as the best female Irish athlete ever. Her old club Ballymore Cobh AC are organising a set of 3k races in the town of Cobh on Monday evening, the 25th of August. More details in this previous post.

Ballymore Cobh AC played a huge part in the development of Sonia O'Sullivan as an athlete from an early age. She fully supports this new initiative from the club and will be present on the night for the inaugural race.

She has also written this blog post below which outlines her early days in the club.

The Early Days Pt.1 can be seen HERE

The Early Days Pt.2.....by Sonia O'Sullivan
Once I started at Cobh Vocational School, training became a bit more regular and this would normally take place immediately after school. I still met with the club a few days a week but I started to train on extra days and follow a training program written up by Sean Kennedy.

This was the beginning of my daily routine that included training at a similar time each day with sessions taking place most days.

I went home for my lunch everyday and would put my training gear on beneath my school uniform, this all helped for the speedy change in the toilets and wasted no time, getting out to run laps and laps of the field as soon after the school bell as possible.  Most days I ran alone , but sometimes I would join in with Roy Collins, Patrick Smith and Willie Cronin. This was my first real experience of running with a group and talking along the way. Most days I ran around the Vocational School field, but at least once a week I would head out with the lads and they would test me over the hills . I always remember one day going for a run out the Valley Road and down the hill to Glenmore. I never knew what loops we were taking and so when we arrived at Glenmore I asked, 'so where to now', only to be told.....'just turn around and back up again'. You can imagine as a teenager I was thinking what's the point of that ?? 'We could've just kept going flat along the Valley Road.'

Sean would drop a training program in the letterbox on his way to work and to me it was just like homework and whatever was written on the page was what I had to do each day. Sean often explained the reasoning but it was a good few years later when I really understood the reasoning behind these training programs. There was plenty of variety in pace and sessions that were prescribed for each day.

This was when I first started to keep a training diary and I was meticulous in recording the details of each days training, it's great to be able to look back now and see the training I did as a schoolgirl in Cobh. I only wish I got to explore Marlogue Woods a little more but it seemed laps and laps of the field inside the "track" was the best place to run and safest way to avoid injury.

Sean introduced me to long runs, hilly runs, interval sessions on the grass,  Fartlek, and he helped put routine and structure in my training. I just did whatever it said on the paper and it didn't matter if I was running around by myself, it was prescribed so I did as I was told and enjoyed every minute.

I also started to do a bit of strength work in Colaiste Muire gym. Deirdre O'Mahony, Lisa O'Donovan and myself would take a break from our homework about 9pm and run in the road to the college and take over the multi gym. I'm not sure we knew exactly what we were doing, just taking turns to lift some weights, do some plyometrics and then run back out the road again .

One of my favourite running activities was a trip to the  Mardyke for training. We had Wednesday afternoon off school, so as track season was approaching I would have track sessions written into my program. I would catch the train to Cork and then walk out to the Mardyke, stopping in Easons along the way to pick up a copy of Athletics Weekly. As I had been on a few Irish international schools teams, I was familiar with some of the British girls names and keen to check up on what races they were running and how fast.

Often Sean would meet me at the track with his stopwatch to monitor the session, mostly repeat 400m's with not very much rest in between . One of my favourite sessions was 1000m, 600m, 400m then repeat and try to match or better the times from the first set. 20x 200m was also another regular session.

After the session I would jog back into town for my warm down and Sean would pick me up outside the train station and drive me home. This is a trait I used throughout my career and was often known to turn up at Heathrow airport coming home from a race only to get changed quickly and leave the driver to take my bag home while I ran, why sit in a car when you can run and get home just as quick.

The Mardyke was always a special place for me, in terms of both training and racing. I just always felt the speed coming off that final bend and dreamt of competing at the Cork City Sports.

To recently have had the honour of being officially recognised in the naming of the track meant a huge deal to me given the connection I had with the venue over the years.

More info about the race in this earlier post. Sonia will also be present after the races in the Commodore Hotel for a Q&A session with sports journalist Feidhlim Kelly.

From Ballymore Cobh AC...."We are hosting a pre-registration day in The Commodore Hotel this Saturday, 16th August, in The Robson Room from 2-6pm. Race numbers will be provided to those registering on Saturday.

The race times can be confirmed as;
