New 3km Running Route in Ballincollig

A new 3km running route has just been developed in Ballincollig Regional Park and the official launch is next Sunday the 12th of April.

From Ballincollig AC.......Ballincollig Athletic Club will be launching the Michael O Donovan 3k Running Route on Sunday 12th April, in the  Regional Park, Ballincollig with the support of the O’Donovan Family and Cork County Council.  The 3km Launch is an event for all the family and is open to walkers, joggers and runners.   Light refreshments will be available for all participants who will also receive a certificate to mark the official opening of the route.  A donation of €2 per participant is suggested to cover the cost of holding the event.  Parking will be available by the Lidl carpark.

Michael O’Donovan  was a dedicated and active member of Ballincollig AC . He was both a Coach and Club Chairperson of at the time of his passing in 2012.  With the support of the O’Donovan Family and Cork County Council, the club decided to mark his involvement in the club by holding a 5k Run in the Regional Park in April  2013 and 2014.  In addition to a grant from Cork County Council, income from both of these races was used to develop the Michael O Donovan 3k Running Route in the Regional Park, Ballincollig.

Ballincollig AC is very grateful to the community of Ballincollig and Cork County Council for the support we received in holding the 5k Run  over the past two years. The Club would like to give special mention to O’Crualaoi Butchers & Delicatessen and Cafe Chico for their on-going support of the Club.

It's been a few years since I've run in the Regional Park so it was good excuse to check out the new course. The 3km loop is more or less dead flat and very quiet, a nice alternative to running on footpaths or running on the side of the road.The surface is a mixture of tarmac and compacted soil with a short section of gravel.

As a short run, it's a nice alternative but for anyone doing any kind of decent distance, then I think it might get a bit boring. One possibility is that the section between the 2km mark and the finish would be good for doing 1km intervals. It would be a nice alternative for anyone who doesn't have access to a proper athletics track or just wants to try something different.

Results of the East Cork AC 3 km road race (6th of 7)...Tues 25th Jan 2011

There was a really big turnout for this 3k road race in Midleton with 177 taking part! This was the 6th race of 7 in the winter series and may be a record number for the event. I know a big problem with a short race like this is that the finishing chute can fill up very quickly and 177 must be at the upper limit of what they can handle.

The winner of the mens race was James McCarthy of East AC in a time of 8:48 (4:43/mile pace) while Niamh Roe of Eagle AC won the ladies race in a time of 10:36 (5:41/mile pace).

Start of the East Cork 3 km series in Midleton...Tues 12th Oct (7:30pm)

East Cork AC kick off their winter series of 3 km road races on Tuesday evening, the 12th of October at 7:30pm. If you are coming from Cork, take the bypass and at the main roundabout, take the 3rd exit and the road south towards Whitegate. After the Topaz garage, take the 2nd right. Entries are taken at one of the parked cars.

What is it???...........Basically, the race itself is 3 loops of a 1km circuit just to the South of Midleton in East Cork. No prizes, no refreshments or anything like that. It's just a 3k run. Entry fee is about €3. The start time for each race is 7:30pm. There will probably be around 100-120 runners taking part.

Note of Caution....If you are doing this race, remember it is in a residental area. The organisers depend on the goodwill of the local residents so that this race can continue. Please keep this in mind when parking, warming up and so on.

Reflective vest........Part of this race is on the hard shoulder of the Midleton to Whitegate road. The organisers request that you wear a reflective bib or vest for the race.

Please note the primary purpose for this series of races is to provide some winter training for runners in the East Cork area. Due to the location of the race, it can only handle a certain number of runners. 70-80 is a nice number, 100-120 and it's getting congested, especially at the finish line. 150 and above will present a lot of problems. Just something to consider if you are going. This is the only preview of the race series that I'll be putting up here on the site.......i.e. Notify people that the series is on but not to constantly remind them.

This 3k road race in Midleton went ahead in the end after all of the rain today washed away the snow and ice. By the time the race took place, most of the rain had subsided and the overall conditions were pretty good for the race. Status of East Cork 3km road race - Tues 12th Jan 2009...

Only 24 hours ago, you could almost say for certain that this race would be called off but with a big thaw on the way, it's now 50:50. The problem is that there is an awful lot of ice on the footpaths that will need to be melted before the race can go ahead. Will all of the rain on Tuesday and the predicted temperatures of 6-7 deg C do the trick? Possibly not. Almost certainly with all of the melting snow/ice and the additional rain on Tuesday, there is going to be a lot of surface water on the road.

Here is the statement from East Cork AC regarding the race. Please note that they are advising non-local runners that the event may be cancelled at a late stage. Remember this in case you end up making a wasted trip.

"A decision on whether to go ahead with tomorrow nights 3 k race will be made at lunch time tomorrow (Tues). Tonight the lap is in the worst state I have ever seen it. The slush and surface water, particularly on the footpath, have frozen to an extremely dangerous level (much worse and more widespread than the way it was when the 4th leg of the series was called off). A notice will appear on the East Cork AC web site at about 2pm to update the situation.

In any event anyone (non locals) intending to travel any more than a few miles to the event would be advised to give the race a miss in case it is called off at the last minute..........Liam O'Brien.....East Cork AC"

East Cork Athletics Club PRESENT THE 12th YEAR OF THEEAST CORK AC ‘3K’ WINTER SERIES

Total of 7 runs over 3km (just short of 2 miles) in Midleton betweenOctober and February – Run ANY FIVE and receive a classy printed long-sleeve T-shirt! The Series takes in three laps of a 1km circuit around Bailick and Ballinacurra. Entries, along with the start and finish, are at the bottom of the Dark Road.

132 ran, the same as race #1 last year. But numbers may actually be down, due to the proximity to the Dublin City Marathon next Monday ?
Temp: 9C, but somewhat damp.
No Seiko big clock, but otherwise an excellent race.
East Cork AC made a clean-sweep, taking 11 of the top 14 places, with a large turnout from Midleton AC. Especially the Midleton AC Ladies!
