Guest Post: Why ...by Pat Walsh

 * Why *

When I wrote last week about Autumn Marathons and how to prepare I didn’t ask the fundamental question… Why?

If you are attempting something difficult ( a marathon ) or anything else. A First 5k for someone inactive, a move to a 10K for a 5k park runner, maybe a 10 mile or a half Marathon for the first time.. Why?

Anything worth achieving can be difficult or otherwise it wouldn’t be an accomplishment. Why are you doing it. When it gets hard in training you need to know this and want this or otherwise you may risk giving up.

I’m running to raise funds for a cause I love

I’m running a Marathon as I want to do it once in my life

I’m running a 10k as I have done 50 5k’s

I’m running to save my health as my doctor is killing me

I’m running to find a better me

Peer pressure from friends will only carry you so far. A dream without committing (entering the race) is only dabbling. Pub talk carries no currency. There will be tough days on the road to your goal so know why, prior to engaging is vital. Know why, commit, do it. You will be glad. I will be proud of you.

This will get you out each day / week to follow your goal.

There will be days you will not feel like it but you know you must. That is called commitment.

You can do it if you want to, but you must want it and overcome any doubts or hinderances that can and will exist. Bad weather, bad form, bad mood can be conquered if there is a good WHY….

Why did I get out of my holiday bed to run a few miles?

The Cork half is on the horizon and I must get the miles in..I must and I know it…  Plus how many times in your life do you get a chance  to run over the Ponte Vecchio or flatten a Round Tower? Tough life but I’m coping.

"When the why is clear, the how is easy."
