Notice...Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 31st Jan 2016

Now as we head towards the end of 2015, it's time to look ahead to the Spring of 2016 and what lies ahead. This is the traditional season for 10 mile road races in Munster and the four big ones are Ballycotton, Dungarvan, Mallow and Cobh.

The first one up is the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday the 31st of January 2016. This is one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. Please note there is an entry limit of 2,500 this year and it will almost certainly close well before race day. The entry fee is €25 and that includes a Nike dry-fit running top. It really is an excellent top and better than most you'd get in any race.

If you are interested in doing this race then I would strongly urge you to enter as soon as possible. While it doesn't sell out as fast as the Ballycotton 10 race, it does sell out earlier every year. Decide if you're doing it and enter.

Here are some details from the organising club West Waterford AC...Entries are now open for the 25th Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 which will be held on Sunday January 31st 2016. West Waterford Athletic Club have announced details of the event which has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre entry race which will close when 2,500 entries is reached. (please note this race was full in a very short time last year).

West Waterford Athletic Club is delighted with the support it receives from its sponsor for this event. We are fortunate to have the support of the local authorities, Glaxosmithkline, Tipperary Water, Flahavan’s, Déise Design, Go Dungarvan smarter travel, Nike,Ger Wyley Sports  along with many other local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan. The race also incorporates the popular John Treacy Club Challenge Cup for men’s and ladies teams which has proved to be hugely competitive. We will again be calling on all the athletic clubs of Ireland to take on the challenge in the 2016 event.

The John Treacy Dungrvan 10 brings together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan ,we look forward to welcoming you to our town on January 31st 2016. Don't be disappointed as many were last year get your entry in soon.

I wonder are they providing chip times this year. It says chip timing but last year they only published the gun time don't think they had any mats at the start. Granted chip timing gets the results out quicker but would be nice if you could see your gun time took me a few minutes last year to get over the start.

I'd like to see all team events judged on more than just the top 3 runners for your club. There are plenty of us whose efforts never get included simply because we're not in the top 3. Still though, a welcome addition to this race.

Just waiting now for a smarty pants to reply and say that I should try harder to get into the top 3 in my club.....!

They have 2 team prizes. One of them doesn't include individual prize winners so that gives people down the field a good chance as other club members that place either overall or in an age category are discounted.

Regarding the start and gun / chip times....As far as I know, it will be gun timed from the start. The road is very wide which allows for a lot of people to get off fast although some will lose some time.

If they had timing mats at the start and it was much narrower, the problem is that there would be a substantial delay in the slower people getting across the mat. As there is loop in the first mile, there would be a real risk that the front runners might complete the loop before the slower runners have cleared that first junction.

I'm not sure if they could really put timing mats across the whole width of the start line? Another problem there is that the road is open until just before the start. Maybe there is a solution but it may not as simple as it would seem.

Is it open to runners who would not be elite runners but would like to set a goal and do a 10 miler. I did the john buckley 10 miler recently and finished it. while i would be a slower runner I would like to try this one and set it as a goal.

The Dungarvan 10 mile is open to all standards. As long as you're running then you should be fine. Have a look at the race website and the results for last year. This will give you a good idea of the standards there.
