Three new bridges planned for Cork City

It was announced recently that there are plans for three new bridges to cross the River Lee in Cork City. Once all shipping operations have been moved down to Ringaskiddy, the planned bridges will be part of the docklands development.

The Mill Street Bridge will allow better access from Centre Park Road to the railway station. Water Street Bridge will provide similar access but further downstream.

From a runners point of view, the one that will make the biggest difference is likely to be the Eastern Gateway Bridge near Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

This will connect the Centre Park Road to the area near the skew bridge on the Lower Road. As well as giving motorists and cyclists more options to cross the River Lee, it will also allow runners in Tivoli and Mayfield direct access to the Marina and the walkways in Mahon and Blackrock.

All of this needs to be finalised though and may well change. Considering the scope of the overall project, I suspect that the Eastern Gateway Bridge will be the priority.
