No East Cork Harbour Marathon in 2022

The organisers of the East Cork Harbour Marathon have announced that it will not go ahead this year. The event which consists of a full marathon, a half-marathon and a 10k was due to be held on the 6th of August 2022.

In a statement, the organisers said... "Whilst we all acclimatise to the slow unravelling of national restrictions, it’s great to see events re-emerge on the racing calendar.

With regard to ECHM 2022, it was our sincere intention to be able to host you all again this August. Unfortunately, due to logistical reasons, we regret to announce that we are unable to do that this year.

We want to wish everyone well in their training and to reiterate our gratitude for all the support you have given us since our first event in 2016.

May we meet again at the start lines in the near future!

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir,

ECHM Team"

This event was last held in August of 2019 when there were 91 finishers in the marathon, 354 in the half-marathon & 626 in the 10k. Results & photos HERE

A look at the numbers for the East Cork Harbour Marathon

I recently had a look at the numbers taking part in the East Cork Harbour Marathon and put together this chart shown above.

As you can see, the numbers for the Marathon have been steady at around the 100 mark for the last few years.

The Half-Marathon had a record turn out this year which was up 8 on last year.

The one that's really taking off though is the 10k. This has jumped 55% in the last two years.

You can find the results and photos for the 2019 event at this previous post.

The map below shows the full marathon route. It starts near Rostellan Woods and between miles 3 and 8, it takes in a lovely stretch by East Ferry. After 10 miles, it's most out on quiet country roads with some nice coastal views from miles 14-22. For the last few miles, you are looking over the harbour.

The half-marathon route is on nice quiet country roads to the south-east of Aghada...

Results & photos of the East Cork Harbour Marathon, Half-Marathon & 10k...Sat 20th Aug 2016

About 860 runners turned out for the inaugural  East Cork Marathon, Half-Marathon & 10k on Saturday the 0th of August 2016. The breakdown per event was as follows...

Full 26.2 mile marathon...94
Half-Marathon...335
10km...431

I was running in the Half-Marathon and it was certainly a challenging course. Only the last few miles of the race were flat while the first 9 miles seemed to be a constant mix of uphill or downhill running. As courses go, I thought it was a nice course mostly on quiet country roads but it wouldn't be a one for running personal best times.

Weather wise, it was certainly a lot dryer than what had been forecast. I'd imagine that on a nice sunny day, it would be a very nice route for a half.

In terms of numbers, they were pretty good. It's always going to be hard to get big numbers for a full marathon but 335 for a half and 431 for a 10k is pretty respectable for an event in rural East Cork.
