Results & Photos of the MMRA Corrin Hill trail race - Sun 19th Jan 2020

Just a few years ago, if a MMRA trail race got 50 to turn out then it was considered to be pretty good. Contrast that with the most recent MMRA trail race on Corrin Hill near Fermoy where 165 took part.

Trail races are now becoming increasingly popular and are attractive to those who want to experience something different to the usual road race scene.

As you can see from the photo above, it was a beautiful sunny morning for the event.

Results & Photos of the MMRA Corrin Hill Trail Race...Sun 14th Jan 2018

Not so long ago, the MMRA trail races used to attract somewhere in the region of 30 to 50 runners per event. 30 seemed to be the norm and it was 50 on a good day.

Contrast that to the numbers on Corrin Hill near Fermoy last Sunday the 14th of January when a whopping 198 runners took part! Even the numbers last year were a record with 141 taking part. This year was up 40% on that.

The attraction of trail races is that it offers something different. It's not like you're putting your name down to run up and down a mountain and it's not that far removed from doing say the usual type of road race.

There are 9 more events left in the MMRA Winter-Spring Series. Info HERE

1    Mark Nolan    821    M    0:27:24    Kerry
2    Andrew Fleet    405    M    0:27:50    West Waterford AC    Waterford

Results of the MMRA Corrin Hill Trail Race...Sun 9th Feb 2014

This trail race in Corrin Hill Woods near Fermoy and organised by the Munster Mountain Running Association attracted a field of 62 runners.

Report from the MMRA...Despite the bad weather of late, the 64 runners who took to Corrin Hill yesterday were greated with ideal running conditions. The course route was just under 5km in length, taking in 200m of climb. The route started with a steep uphill section up to the cross, where runners were rewarded with a long downhill section along a forest road before entering the forest on trails at the foot of the hill. Unfortunately for these racers, what goes down must come up, with a long drag up to the finish, those familiar with the route were able to factor this into their race tactics!

The short distance and long downhill sections lead to some very impressive times. The top three spots were divided by just 15 seconds. Noel Berkeley held on to take the honours in this race, with Mike Curley Cunningham hot on his heels. Sarah McCormack entered the finishing straight just seconds behind Curley, rounding off the top 3 and taking the women's honours at the same time. Kealan O'Connor took third spot in the men's battle. Carol Finn and Laura Schwirz rounded off the women's leader board in second and third place respectively.

In the juniors race, Joe Bosonnet and Tiernan Morrissey had to fight hard against one another over the 2km course, resulting in the closest finish of the day. Joe just pipped Tiernan at the post, with only 1 second separating the two warriers.

1 18.00 Noel Berkeley M40
2 18.05 Mike Curley Cunningham M40
4 18.55 Kealan O'Connor M40
3 18.15 Sarah McCormack F 1st Place Ladies

25 22.05 Laura Schwirz F 3rd place ladies

New trail series in Cork..July & Aug 2013

The Munster branch of the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA) are organising a new trail series during the months of July and August 2013. The three events are organised near the towns of Fermoy, Mallow and Midleton.

The usual type of IMRA event tends to be running up to a summit of a mountain and back down again. This new trail series is on tracks and the gradients and surface is a lot easier. They should appeal to those who like running off-road and those who want to try something different than the usual road race. Ordinary training shoes are fine for these type of event, no specialist shoes are required.

The first event is on Wednesday evening, the 31st of July in Corrin Hill woods near Fermoy . Directions and maps HERE
