IAAF article on Cork athlete Ciarán Ó Lionáird

The IAAF had an article in their online magazine recently about Irish international Ciarán Ó Lionáird from Cork.

Here's a little excerpt...

"When we arrived at the track it was set in the middle of some cornfields," says Ó Lionáird. "It had a rickety old grandstand with a pub on the corner of the track. It was like a throwback. “I remember the perfect weather: 18-20°C and no wind. I went through the first lap in 59 seconds and was dead last. Then I ran the middle two laps in 1:51 or 1:52. I remember running the 600m to 400m section super-fast and passing about six guys.

"The race was run in almost total silence. I hit the bell in 2:37 right on the shoulder of the leader and finished second [behind the Ethiopian Dawit Wolde]. I remember crossing the line, looking at the time and thinking: did that just really happen?

"Nate, who had finished just behind me, said, ‘man, you’ve just changed your life.’ It was only when the news filtered through to Ireland and I got messages on my phone that I realised what had happened. It was amazing.”

Ó Lionáird had set a new personal best of 3:34.46, hacking an incredible six seconds from his previous record to qualify for for the Daegu 2011 World Championships.

Ciarán Ó Lionáird wins bronze at the Euro Indoor Championships...

In the final of the mens 3,000m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenborg , Sweden, Ciarán Ó Lionáird finished in a personal best time of 7:50.40 to finish third for the bronze medal.
Ciarán pictured with Ciarán Ó Catháin, president of Athletics Ireland. Photo by Kieran Carlin of Finn Valley AC

For most of the race, Ciarán stayed near the back of the pack out of trouble and picked up the pace with about 400m to go when he followed the eventual winner Ibrahimov. At the bell and 200m to go, it seemed as if it was a two horse race but the Spaniard Juan Higuero surged in the last few metres to take the silver.
Considering all the injury problems that he had in 2012, Ciarán is really beginning to show what a fantastic talent he is.

Post race interview with Will Downing here...

For the other Irish athletes today, it was a mixed bag. Fionnuala Britton in the 3000m went through to the final and Amy Foster went through to the 60m semi-finals.

Ciara Everard in the 800m finished 3rd in the womens 800m and also went through to the final. It was however a photo finish for that last qualifying spot...

As you can see, Ciara is #6. I'm not sure how they separated them but Ciara got the nod.

In the other 800m semi-final, Rose-Anne Galligan went out after finishing 5th but ran a personal best time in the process.

In the mens 400m, there was some drama as Brian Gregan got spiked as the field converged after 150 metres. Just before the 200m mark, the Ukrainian athlete Burakov stood on Gregan's shoe and spiked him in the process....
...an injury that required several stitches. Hopefully, it won't be any more serious than that.

In a post race interview, Brian Gregan said......“My raceplan was to get to the bend, and to get to the break third. My plan was going perfect, with perfect pace, around 21.6-21.7 to the bell. Unfortunately I got spiked. A guy just completely took me out of it, and there was no coming back from it. He actually stood on my ankle and ripped me down my leg. I’ve had nine stitches. It was poor form.”

With the first of three rounds of the Olympic 1500m scheduled to take place in just 11 days, O'Lionard said he just has to take things one round at a time, and not project too far forward. He's realistic about his chances, but said that he's a good tactician which should help him to advance.
"I don't think worrying's going to do anything for me," he intoned. "At this point, my body is what it is. I've been dealt the cards I've been dealt and I have to play them the best that I can."

Fourth Episode of London Calling now on the RTE Player

In the fourth episode of 'London Calling' on RTE television, they follow Irish race walker Jamie Costin from West Waterford AC as he tries to get a qualifying time for the London Olympics.

Description..."Jamie Costin is a 50km race walker who has qualified for three previous Olympics but only competed in two. He broke his back in a car crash just before the Athens Games and his return to competition and qualifying for the Beijing Olympics was a story of triumph against the odds in the face of adversity. This episode focuses on his return to fitness, despite doctor's advice. He then travels to Saransk in Russia for the Race Walking World Cup, the final chance for this three time Olympic warrior to make it four. But all is not well back at the farm....

Orla Barry is a 22-year-old discus thrower from Ladysbridge, Co Cork, who was born without kneecaps and lower leg bone. Her parents made the difficult decision to amputate both her legs above the knee when she was 11 months, but this traumatic early life did not hold Orla back. She broke onto the international scene aged just 18 finishing fifth in the final of the F57 discus at Beijing in 2008. She is now the European record holder in her class and will be hoping to win a medal in London. However despite her international pedigree, her inclusion in the Irish team is not a foregone conclusion and she faces the acid test trying to make the distance at the Irish Wheelchair Association National Championships in Santry.

Ciarán Ó Lionáird is often better known by his nicknames- 'Mad Len' and 'The Bullet with the Mullet'. From West Cork he showed a talent for running from an early age. Upon joining Lee Vale Athletics Club in Cork City he realised he could use his ability to gain a college athletics scholarship in the USA. Leaving Ireland at 18, much of his career went unnoticed back home as a series of injuries stinted his progress. But he burst on the scene last year achieving the Olympic qualifying time, reaching the World Championships 1,500m final and being signed to run full time for Nike. The episode joins Ciarán on one of his few, but much cherished, trips home to see his mother and brothers. The series then jets stateside to see how this boy who grew up on a dairy farm in Cork mixes it with the world's elite athletes in Nike's state of the art world headquarters in Portland, Oregon. We then return to reflect with Angela, his mother, on her mix of emotions about her eldest son - her pride in his achievements while missing him dearly."

Ciarán is on from the start until 9:50
Orla is on from 14:50 to 20:45
Jamie is on from 9:50 to 14:50 and 20:45 to 22:50

The programme can be seen HERE  (Available until the 31st of July)

Ciarán Ó Lionáird continues his preparation for the London Olympics...

24 year old Ciarán Ó Lionáird from Macroom in Cork will be representing Ireland in the 1500m in the Olympic Games in London. In 2011, he finished a very credible 10th in  a packed finish in the final of the 1500m in the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. In early February of this year, he won a indoor grand prix mile race in Boston in 3:56:01. A few days later, he improved on this time by running a new personal best time of 3:54.76 in Arkansas. In March however, he picked up an injury to his Achilles tendon and he has spent the last few months trying to recover.

In a recent article in the Southern Star newspaper, Ciarán confirmed his preparation for the Olympics is going well despite the time lost to injury. In the interview, he said......‘Most other athletes are probably starting to ease up now while I’m pushing harder. What I won’t have is the depth of build-up races in May and June that I would have liked. A lot of guys will get to the Olympics tired having raced a lot trying to chase times and other things. But I will be fresh at the starting line, I’m training well right now and I am managing the injury fairly well. It’s taken a lot longer than I would have liked but I had to make sure that the body was ready to go and was strong enough, and that I wasn’t going to set myself back long-term. I consulted with the doctors here in America and my support staff back at the Irish Institute of Sport in Ireland to make sure that I got the all-clear to resume hard training. It’s going well, I am making progress every day and I’m excited to move forward. It’s not an ideal scenario by any means. But it wasn’t an ideal scenario for me either last year, just getting the time before the World Championships, but it worked out for me there. There are a lot of fellas who have come out on fire this year, in April and May, but are they going to be able to hold that until London? Only time will tell. I am happy that, at least, I have the qualifying time in my back pocket and I can go to London really focused and fresh, and have my training geared towards that specific event. I am still a young athlete and for a while there were talks that I might have to give this year a miss to allow my body to recover from the injury and to make sure that it wasn’t going to be an injury that would ruin the rest of my career. We got all the scans, the tendon healed nicely, from where we were two months ago it progressed a lot better and a lot quicker, and I am fortunate that I am able to give the Olympics my full focus now.’

Ciarán will be featured in the TV programme London Calling on RTE this evening at 10:35pm.

Launch of the 'Leevale 2012 Open Track and Field Meet'...

Last Wednesday evening, Leevale Athletic Club held the launch of their 'Leevale 2012 Open Track and Field Meet' at Mahers Sports in Cork City. Amongst those present was Ciarán Ó Lionáird who was home on a short break. Ciarán echoed the comments of the other speakers, saying that he felt kids starting off in athletics should have an opportunity to try sprints, jumps and distance events and the Leevale meet fills an important gap in the athletics calendar. He also had plenty of words of  advice for the youngsters who attended on the night. Ciarán has now returned to the USA to resume his training for the 2012 Olympics in London.

The Leevale Meet for adults and juveniles will be held at the CIT track in Bishopstown in Cork City  on the weekend of Sat 14th and Sun 15th of April 2012. More info on this flyer for the event.

Irish athletes at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul...March 2012

The major international competition this weekend was the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey this weekend. A small team of just three Irish athletes made the trip with Derval O'Rourke and Ben Reynolds taking part in the 60m hurdles and Ciarán Ó Lionáird in the 1500m.

Despite the fact that it was a major event, some of the sprinting events were marred by poor acoustics. Several athletes complained that the sound coming from the loudspeaker behind the starting blocks was too low and the echo from the gunshot sounded like a second shot to indicate a false start. The American Kristi Castlin was disqualified from her 60-meter hurdles heat after stopping in her tracks as the rest of the pack took off toward the finish line. Sally Pearson, the 100-metre hurdles world champion, won her heat but she also thought there was a problem at the start. "I thought someone had false started. 'Oh crap, that wasn't me, was it?''' Pearson said. "But the girl next to me was starting so I just kept going myself. I don't know what they're going to do about that because it's really confusing.'' The men running the 60 metres also heard the repetitions off the walls, but they had the advantage of running after the women.

From an Irish point of view, it was a mixed bad of performances with just some regret over what might have been.

Derval O'Rourke was in one of the hardest heats of the 60m hurdles running 8.19 for 4th place and qualifying for the semi-finals as one of the fastest losers. In the semi, she finished in a seasons best time of 8.13 and 6th position (see pic) but unfortunately not fast enough to go through to the final.

In the 1500m, Ciarán Ó Lionáird had a disappointing run finishing in 11th place in the first heat with a time of 3:50.12 (Ignore the PB next to his time, that was a mistake by the IAAF) . To put that in context, Ciarán ran 3:37 in the final of the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea last year and his personal best outdoors is 3:34.

In an article in the Irish Times, Ian O'Riordan has a piece about his performance and why it was poor. He starts off with "Indeed because I’m not in Istanbul myself I don’t know who he’s blaming, although it’s surely only himself, and the complete breakdown in focus and race execution he so effectively demonstrated at the World Championships last August."....and then goes on to speculate as to what went wrong. You can read it HERE but I'm not sure if you'll be any the wiser as it seems to be mainly conjecture.

Whatever the reason for the poor run, his time of 3:50 says nothing about his current form. As recently as early February, he won a mile race...i.e. 1609 metres...in Boston in 3:56. At that pace, he would have done 1500m in 3:40 which would have easily won the heat in Istanbul on Friday.

It should be remembered that Ciarán is still only 22 years old and still 'learning' the ropes. As he has said in recent interviews, every race is a learning experience and his best years are still ahead. Eamonn Coghlan was 31 years old when he ran 3:49.78 to set a new indoor miles record and won the 5000m in the world championships in 1993.

Ben Reynolds was the third Irish athlete in action in Istanbul. He finished in 5th place in a time of 7.82 in the first heat of the mens 60m hurdles and went into the semi-finals as one of the fastest losers. On Sunday, he ran 7.80 and finished in 7th place and didn't make the finals.
