AAI Course Measurer Accreditation Course in Cork on Sat April 21st

From John Quigley.......

An AAI Course Measurer Accreditation Course will be held in the CIT, Cork on Sat April 21st, from 10:00 am, until approx. 4pm. Candidates who are accredited will be authorised to measure and certify road race courses up to Irish National Championships. A prime objective of this course is to certify people based in North Cork, West Cork and East Cork, where there is a shortage of accredited measurers. Consequently, priority will be given to applicants from these regions. While the course is open to all applicants, priority will be given to AAI registered members, for whom the course is free. However non-AAI members will be charged a fee of €250 for new applicants, with €100 for those doing a "refresher". All fees are payable to Cork County Board, AAI.

Jones Counters will be supplied for the course, however these will be taken back at the end of the course. They will be available for purchase at cost price, €120 each, and it is recommended that they be purchased - after all, even if accredited, you can't measure with out a counter! The course will comprise a classroom theory/philosphy/guidelines/pitfalls section and a practical portion, during which candidates will be under observation. The course will be led by John Quigley, IAAF Grade 'B' Measurer, accompanied by Tom McCormack, IAAF Grade 'A' Measurer and AAI official, and John Walshe, who is regarded as being "the trailblazer" in Irish Measurement.

Candidates should forward their application, as soon as possible, to John Quigley, Cluain Mhuire, Trabeg Lawn, South Douglas Road, Cork. 087-6261178, eagle262@eircom.net

Candidates will require the following for the course:
* Their own bicycle
* Safety gear: Hi-viz jacket, helmet, (both mandatory), along with gloves (optional but advised) and safety glasses (optional but advised) - required when hammering nails/markers for the calibration course.
* Bike tools: spanners (you'll need to take off your front wheel to attach the Jones Counter to your front wheel), bike lock (don't want your bike stolen while we're in the classroom), puncture repair kit.
* Rain gear: Pray for fine weather on the day!
* Change of clothes - showers will be available on the day
* Backpack to store gear while cycling.
* Calculator, notebook (preferably a small hardback notebook), pen(s) and pencil.

Other equipment that you will require, when measuring your own courses, include:
* A digital camera is not required for measurement, but it is an invaluable tool for recording location of marks.
* Steel measuring tape, at least 30m long.
* Fridge thermometer
* Spring balance (required to ensure correct tape tension when laying down calibration courses)
* Line marking paint aerosol
* Chalk
* Bike pump
* Masonry nails, washers and hammer (for putting down permanent marks on calibration course)

Update from John Quigley...
The course is now full - we can only cater for as many people as we have Jones Counters. Due to demand, we will probably hold another course later in the year. However......If anyone from extreme west Cork (Bantry/Skibbereen/Dunmanway) wants to do it we'll ensure a place for them. There are a lot of new races in that region, so there's really a big need for local measurers.
