Enhanced First Aid facilities required at local races?

Following on from the incident at the Cobh race, John Quigley of Eagle AC sent out the following e-mail to Eagle AC members. As it is such an important subject, I have reprinted it here with John's permission. Please read it...

Hi All

Two incidents in the last 10 days have raised awareness of the some risks associated with organising races.

The first was the collapse and subsequent death of Gerry Mullane, Bilboa AC, last saturday week. Gerry collapsed at the mile mark in a race and was subsequently placed on life support. He died last Monday.

On Friday night, following the Cobh 5k, Gerry Lawton, Belgooly AC, collapsed several minutes after finishing. Gerry was given CPR by Midleton's Noel O'Regan and quick thinking by Michael Dooley and others came up with a defribilator from Cobh Taxis and Oxygen from the Fire Brigade. Thankfully Gerry is recovering well in the CUH.

It is clear that we need to have medical personnel at all races from now on, and an ambulance at any race where significant numbers (to be decided/debated) attending.

I believe that we now must have a defibrilator available at ALL races, along with trained personnel (and I mean US!!). I suggest that between the AAI and BHAA, we need a minimum of 1 unit, should have at least one per organisation and possibly need three to 4 in total. I understand that the BHAA are already debating the issue. Cork AAI has previously discussed and rejected the idea of getting one. I think its time for the AAI to revisit the matter and will be raising the issue withe the AAI before and at the next meeting.

These units cost approx. €2500 each. They are relatively dear but if any of our loved ones required one of these units, we'd be shoving money at anyone with one!

Tomorrow morning I intend to look into getting hold of these one way or another. I reckon we should be able to get someone to sponsor these and I'm asking everyone to actively seek sponsorship, either full or part, for these units. Failing that, between the AAI & BHAA, clubs and individual subscription, we MUST have them asap. Many of us will have to undergo training - I'd say as many as possible. We also need to set up a contact protocol to ensure, at races, that word quickly reaches the medics if someone collapses out the course.

I don't think having an ambulance and, at a minimum, medics, along with a defribilator, is an option any more. It is now a must and I think permits should only be granted for races with this cover.

We all need to push this with both the AAI (in particular) and the BHAA - bring it up with them at every opportunity - that should ensure that it gets done NOW.

John Quigley
(Eagle AC)

So, what do you think? Are you trained in the use of a defribillator? Do you know of any that are surplus?.../not being used? If you want to contact John, then send an e-mail to me (shown on the right of this page) and I'll pass on the info.

If you just want to comment on John's e-mail, use the Comment link below.
Cobh Race - Evening Echo article (20th of Aug 2007)

Now that there is a bit of a lull in the races, I'm posting this newspaper article from the Evening Echo of the 20th of August. From what I have heard from some people that were present, there is a difference between what was reported above and what actually happened on the night. One of the key figures on the night was Noel O'Regan of Midleton AC (shown above in the picture wearing the baseball cap, 2nd from right) who gave Gerry CPR. Well done Noel!!
However, regardless of 'who did what', the main thing is that Gerry is currently recovering well.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race - 29th August 2007

There was a good turn out for this race with 205 taking part. As always, the facilties and refreshments were excellent at the Naval base.

To see the results, click on this link...http://www.corkbhaa.com/results/ArmyNavy2007.html
New Poll...
On the right hand side of this page, you will find the new poll.

The question I asked is...

Now that the Summer races are over, what is your preferred distance for a road race?

Maybe you prefer the shorter races? ...or the long ones?
If you have a preference, pick one and we'll see if there is a trend in the results.

Question...
Do you have any suggestions for future polls? Send an e-mail to the address shown on the right.
Cork City Marathon survey results...
Thanks to the 21 people who voted in the first survey carried out on this blog. The question that I asked was...

What did you think of the Cork City Marathon / Relay?

The results were...
a) Excellent. Very well organised. (12)
b) Good but could have been better. (7)
c) Not great. Should have been better. (1)
d) Disaster. Never again. (1)

Some points...
Now, I know that 21 is a small sample but it should be enough to show a trend.
In addition, I presume that those runners who had a bad day may have been out on the course a long time, may not be regular runners and probably have not seen this blog to vote in the survey.

So, the conclusion that I would take from the results is that amongst regular runners, the vast majority thought the Marathon / Relay was a good event with some things that could be improved on.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race - 29th August 2007 (Wednesday 7:30pm)

Only 2 more evening races to go on the Cork BHAA calendar and this is the 2nd last one. The sign-on, start and finish is in the Naval base near Ringaskiddy.

Directions - Just get to Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area.

Course details - The start and finish points are in the Naval base itself. The course goes back towards Ringaskiddy and just as you are entering the town, you take a sharp left and climb 500 m up a steep hill. After that, the course is pretty much ok. There are some small drags but nothing major.

So overall, it's not a bad race. Going on last year's entry, I'd expect the turnout to be around the 180 to 200 mark. Just remember the start time, 7:30 pm, not the usual 8pm.

If you want to have a closer look at the course or need more directions, have a look at this link...http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/3579396
Cork Half Marathon.........a quick look ahead - Sun 9th Sept 2007

I know this is about 2 weeks away but the closing date for pre-entries is next Saturday, the 1st of September. The pre-entry cost is €20. However, if you miss this date, you can still enter on the day for €25.

You can get an entry form at this link...http://www.stfinbarrsac.com/MizunoEntry2006.doc

You should return it to John Buckley Sports on or before Saturday (accross the river from the Opera House).

Appearently, you can also enter online. Here is the link...http://www.activeeurope.com/Events/index.cfm?AC=EventDetails&E=45900

Ballycotton 5 Photographs...

Derek O'Keeffe of Eagle AC took some very good shots during the Ballycotton 5 mile road race last Thursday evening (23rd Aug 2007). In the post below this one is a shot of Alan O'Shea winning the race. Derek has managed to capture the image of the runners clearly yet the background is distorted which really gives the sensation of speed.

The image above shows two fellow clubmates, Pat Murphy and Michael O'Regan of Eagle AC finishing strongly. Look at how fast and distorted those feet look...no wonder I couldn't catch them!! (finished 30 seconds behind ;o)

A total of 28 photos are now up on the Eagle AC website. The link is http://www.eagleac.net/component/option,com_gallery2/Itemid,47/?g2_itemId=7570

Results of the Liscarroll 8 km road race - 25th August 2007

Looks like a small enough crowd turned out for the first running of the Liscarroll 8 km road race. I wonder if the high entry fee of €15 was responsible for this? Having a prize fund of €2,000 for a race that only had 53 people taking part seems huge.

So, what was the course like?.....hilly/flat? Well organised? Prizes? Refreshments?........Entry fee....do you think it was too expensive or was it fair?........if you did the race, you can leave a comment by clicking the link at the bottom of this post. (or click on Comment to see what others thought of the race)

So, here are the results...

Preview of the Liscarroll 8 km Road Race - Sat 25th August (6:45pm) (Updated 4:35pm)
This is a new race on the racing calendar. It is on in Liscarroll in North-West Cork. Looks like the best route to get there is to head North on the N20 Cork to Limerick road and look for a turn off left in Buttevant.
Course - I am told that the area around Liscarroll is pretty hilly so I'd expect that maybe it won't be a flat course. The distance is also a little strange in that it is 8km rather than 5 miles and the markers are every km.
Entries - The entry fee for the race is €15 which is frankly very expensive for what it is. I know all proceeds from the race go towards the Leukaemia Research Unit at Cork University Hospital but how much of that entry fee goes towards it? How much goes towards the €2000 worth of prizes?......and the medal for all finishers?
Flyer - If you want to see the flyer for this event, see the earlier post further down this page (dated Thurs 23rd Aug).
Update - Just recieved this message from Paudie Birmingham (Updated 4:35 pm)
"Just in case you want to put this on your Blog. I rang the Liscarroll culb and I think this is the Liscrroll run. 99% sure. Starts at a pub called the Old Walls and finishes at the community centre. This being the case, the first 2 kms will be hard as the street called Castle Street is uphill. Probably not a bad run to the finish if people have any energy left. Anyway enjoy if you’re doing it...Paudie"
Paudie has put a route of the course up on the following website.........http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/709976057
Thanks Paudie
