Results of the Bay Run Half-Marathon & 10k...Sun 3rd May 2015

The annual Bay Run Half-Marathon & 10k was held in Bantry on Sunday the 3rd of May 2015. It was always going to be interesting to see how numbers would go this year considering that it was no longer going head to head with the Great Railway Run in Carrigaline and the Bandon Half-Marathon & 10k.

In 2013, a total of 518 people did the Bay Run Half-Marathon. In 2014, the event was split between the half and a new 10k race with a combined total of 572, a 10% increase on the previous year despite the other two events in Bandon and Carrigaline being on the same Bank Holiday weekend.

The graph below shows the drop in numbers this year. The half is down 27% on 2014 while the 10k was down a smaller 8%.

Initially there was supposed to have been a full marathon as well but it had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest.

Any age categories

I wish Bandon AC would reconsider holding their half again. It was a tough course but a great event.

Dear enough for 16 prizes and no age category.

I ran the Bayrun in 2010, 2011 & 2012 and was injured in 2013 - enjoyed the event in all 3 occasions, particularly as I'm originally from the area. Did not run in 2014 or 2015, as a matter of principle, as it's overpriced for what it is - the second most expensive roadrace in Cork (after the Cork marathon) plus it's too grand to have proper refreshments afterwards. Every town and village in Cork has a roadrace now, most of a very high standard when it comes to atmosphere and organisation.

Ran race yesterday and had done in 2012 and 2013, it was a really tough one this year with the new course. The last comment is a bit unfair as it is no longer a commercial venture with the money going to charity now so water bananas etc is sufficient. What I would say is this years course will turn a lot of newer runners off and could lead to a fall off in numbers.

Really enjoyed the half, great new route mostly off the main road and very challenging. There was great support at pearsons bridge, the big cheers and encouragement were just what was needed at that point and gave me a big boost.
It's a pity numbers were down as it's well supported by local volunteers and proceeds go to Bantry hospice fund.
Admittedly it's expensive and organisers might want to consider more of a goody bag at registration, surely some sponsors could have got on board. The bag consisted of the same tshirt as last year (even change the colour?), race map and number. No treats, flyers, bars or anything else, there actually wasn't even a bag.
None of these things would prevent me going again next year as we had a great family weekend in bantry but others may be turned off.

Did the half enjoyed it but it is still expensive. Bandon was far better and not so expensive.

Agree with first comment.but it was 12 prizes big enough numbers for category prizes and category positions as this keeps interest goin for people.looks like cut back due to numbers being down.

I was a bit disappointed with the change of route.
It should of been left the same as other years before 2013. Also according to my watch the course measurement was incorrect My watch read 13.2 at the finish

Shame to see the numbers continuing to fall but at such a steep price its hardly surprising.

Water out of cups, a measly banana and bottle of water at the finish line... Very poor value overall!
