Over the last few years, a very successful graded track and field league has been held at CIT during the summer months. This has been of particular interest to those who specialise in track and field athletics as well as some of those more used to the road running but wanted to give the track a try.
Over the course of the summer, most of the usual distances were covered from 100m to 5000m on the track. The 5,000m race last June attracted a field of 20 runners who had finishing times from 14:47 to 21:38.
One event that has been absent up to date has been the longest track race, the 10,000m. It's a little bit unusual in that it is included in major athletic championships but at 25 laps, it's not exactly the most spectator friendly race for smaller meets.
David Comber of Leevale AC asked me to put up a short notice to ask if anyone would be interested in a 10,000m race in Cork this summer. He wrote..."I was thinking about trying to organise a 10,000m track race over the summer as part of the Cork Graded Leagues, it would be a good opportunity for anyone looking to go to Nationals to get a bit of practice at running 25 laps."
If you think it's a good idea then leave a comment saying so and maybe your estimated 10,000m time / 10 k road race time. You don't have to leave your name if you don't want to. This is just an exercise to gauge the level of interest. If enough people are interested in a 10,000m track race then perhaps the organisers might put one on.
Note : From what I remember, these graded league races are only open to club athletes.

Great idea. Most 10k races on road have a hill or 2 so this is a good chance of a p.b.. Running on a track doing a 10k is a real test of mental strength.est time 32:30
Interested 45 mins
I'd be well up for that...will you be doing a preview of the course??
John
Sounds like a great idea.
I'm sure there would be a lot of interest, in particular with the 10K distance
Go for it!
Great idea Dave and thanks for posting the notion John. I think I can speak for the committee who organise the leagues and say that if there is interest we will definitely facilitate the race :-)
Good idea to try this... Have done a 10,000m on the track once... great sense of achievement... as good as any marathon. I'll be signing up for this... if they can do one in the Dublin track league, we can surely get one going in Cork. If you can do 10k on road you should try this.
interested. great idea. road pb 36.30. est track time the same??
Angela
Fantastic idea. Should definitely happen. Estimated time 36min.
Would like to do the race defo but am not a club athlete,.if not open to club members seems a shame. Surely by letting everyone interested run these events would attract more members to clubs. Just a thought......John McCarthy,..interested 46mins (on a good day)
Great idea Est Time 36 mins
Definitely worth doing, est time 31 mins
great idea lads i would be there in a heart beat. Brian Murphy Ennis Track
non Club athlete, would be interested and would expect to do 40mins
yes, count me in. Est time 34 mins
Great idea. There is plenty of runners in the club who are interested. I'd be interested. Pb sub42
Would be interested also. 35 mins
It would be interesting to see if some of the better Road Runners (e.g. the 'usual' top 5) competed in this to see how it would translate into times on the track.....
Sounds good - would run if it was to go around sub 36mins
Just a comment in general, I've done the graded leagues over the last couple of years and I don't think the organisers would have any problem if non-club runners want to take part. Last year the graded leagues incorporated the County Championships so only registered club athletes are eligible for medals in these races but again I think any runner will be accomodated on the night.
Great idea, more 10k on track is needed to boost national distance running standards! I look forward to it
Would def be interested, change from the roads, sub 40 min
Most of us seldom if ever race on a track. This would be great if it happened. Estimated time some where around 41 mins
This would be fantastic. I'd definitely sign up.
P.s.
Love the comment about the "course preview"
interested.....38ish minutes
Would be nightmare for organizers. Would have to have several races. How many times would a 30 min runner lap a 45 min runner.
would be an excellent event. need a good 10k. loads would show up. is it happening?
Hi Dave I would be interested! Munster and Cork badly needs more track races and track 10ks. Barry Donovan
