For the last few years, the Maxi-Marathon has been held in Killarney, Co.Kerry. It started off as a 15 mile race and in later years, options for a Half-Marathon and a 10k were added.
As of 2013, the 15 mile Maxi-Marathon is gone and a full 26.2 mile Marathon takes it's place. Full details have yet to be announced but it should prove to be a popular option for a lot of people. The Half-Marathon starts up near Moll's Gap and runs downhill to finish in the National Park in Killarney. I would presume that the full Marathon will be nowhere near as easy. Will it have lots of hills? Will it be really hard? We'll have to wait and see.

Typical of Kerry athletics- two Killarney marathons within 8 weeks of each other with the marathon of the lakes on in may- both will suffer!
hmmmm. i wonder about this. Will this another of those rip off "scenic marathons" a la dingle, clonakilty, connemara where people are forced to come down the night because the organisers are too tight to post out chips and bibs and then are fleeced by the killarney hoteliers ? No thanks
The organisers of the Maxi Marathon closed the entries before the event this year and posted out the bib number and chip. They gave out the dry fit tops after the race.

As someone who has been critical of "commercial" races before on this blog...only as recently as last week regarding Clonakilty, I was delighted to see the organisers of the Killarney Maxi has the full on offer for us. Although I've never ran the Maxi race myself, my friends and colleagues always talk very highly of the quality of the organisation, post and pre care of runners...And What Killarney has to offer regarding scenery...Bring it on...
Cant wait to see the route...
john the maxi is a joke the last couple of winners as prizes got there money back. Nothing went back to improving athletics. Athletics Ireland needs to be strong and get races for profit to put money back in grass roots athletics if they care about the sport enough its the right thing to do
If 1200+ people decided to take part then it can hardly be described as a joke.
Rather than starting a debate here, we might look into the merits or otherwise of commercial races in a post in the new year.
Totally agree with you John, a debate on the merits would be great.
I do feel that it should be mentioned, that this race has the charity "Bee for Battens" as a charity Partner, your followers may remember the family from Killorglin who had 2 children with this disease, one of whom has passed away.
Kinda puts things in perspective dont you think.
Merry Christmas to you and your followers.
