Bandon AC Open Sports...Sun 7th Sept 2014

Bandon Athletic Club were formed back in 1964 and in 2014, they celebrate their 50th anniversary. To commemorate this, the club is holding an Open Sports Day in Bandon Town Park.

From Bandon AC......The Open Sports Day is being hosted to celebrate our 50th birthday and to coincide with the first open sports held in Bandon back in 1964.

We are hoping for a competitive and fun day for both juvenile and senior athletes. Admission is €5 for adults, €3 for juvenilles/juniors and €10 for a family which covers entry to any of the events. Junior and Senior pre-entry is available which will help the organisers but athletes can simply enter on the day if necessary. The full order of events and pre-entry can be found on www.bandonac.org

The day starts with juvenile events at 12 pm with the first senior events starting at 2pm. Linking back to a tradition when cycling was a core part of many athletic events, there are 3 cycle events included on the programme which should make for an interesting change.

Please note that this was originally due to be held on the 24th of August but had to postponed due to wet weather.

Further info...(note the times are the same as originally planned for the 24th)

Results of the Liscarroll 10k road race...Fri 29th Aug 2014

There seems to have been a big drop in numbers this year with 85 runners taking part. Last year when it was part of the Ballyhoura Active Series, it had 131. Coming one day after the Ballycotton 5 probably didn't help either although the catchment area would be a bit different.

Results & photos of the Ballycotton 5 mile road race...Thurs 28th Aug 2014

A record 573 runners took part in this years Ballycotton 5 mile road race, the 4th and final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series. That was up 6% on the previous record of 539 which was set last year.

In the mens race, there was a dramatic finish with John Meade of St.Finbarr's AC coming from behind to just pass James McCarthy of East Cork AC before the line...

Overall positions after 4 races......These can now be seen HERE

Tom Hartnett (R) presenting the overall series first prize to James McCarthy of East Cork AC

Some notes...
a) Strong growth in the numbers completing the 4 races in the series this year. The overall number of people doing all 4 races was up 17% with a lot of that growth coming from men.

b) The percentage of men getting a top 50 t-shirt was about 21%. This was the lowest percentage ever and was due obviously to the growth in numbers. The percentage of women getting a top 30 t-shirt was 25%. In August of 2013, I had a post up about women getting top 30 instead of top 20 t-shirts as it was in previous years. In 2014, the number was increased to 30. If it had stayed at top 20 then the percentage of women getting a t-shirt would have been just under 17%.

c) A suprising 62% of the finishers at the last race in Ballycotton had completed the previous three. I would have thought it might have been a lot lower. My initial thought was that it was probably non-club runners completing the series so as to avail of the extended entry window for the Ballycotton 10 race next March. However when I look at the figures, some 51% of those completing the series were club runners who can avail of the same extended entry window. No doubt some people do all 4 because of the Ballycotton 10 but it seems that for a lot if not most, it's just a popular series to take part in.

From the registration area to the start line is about 200 metres. If you have taken part in the first 3 races then you can find your race number HERE

The overall positions with times after 3 races can be seen HERE

Louise Shanahan from Cork finishes 6th in Youth Olympics in China

A team of five Irish athletes traveled to Nanjing in China for the Youth Olympic Games. They were...Michaela Walsh (Shot Put), Roseanna McGuckian (200m), Eoin Sheridan (Discus), Adam King (Hammer) & Louise Shanahan (800m). Irish results in this earlier post.

L-R...Adam King, Eoin Sheridan, Louise Shanahan, Michaela Walsh & Roseanna McGuckian

Three of the five athletes recorded new personal bests at the Games including 17 year old Louise Shanahan of Leevale AC in Cork. In 2013, Louise won Gold in the 800m at the European Youth Olympic Festival in the Netherlands. At the Athletics Ireland Track & Field Championships in July, Louise won a national bronze medal at a senior level. In the Youth Olympics last Wednesday, she finished 2nd in her heat to qualify for the final on Saturday in which she ran a new PB of 2:08.29 to finish 6th.

Another member of the squad setting personal bests was Adam King of Iveragh AC in Kerry. His throw of 71.91 metres in the Hammer saw him get through to the A final. There was a recent article in the Irish Examiner about Adam and how as a former GAA player, he got into this aspect of  athletics....“I’ve always been into athletics and about four years ago on a summer camp in Castleisland we were given the chance to try out the different events, hurdling, long jump and so on. And that was how I started hammer throwing.” . There could be a lesson in there for other clubs and counties.

Dry-Fit top for the Dingle Marathon...Sat 6th Sept 2014

The Dingle Marathon is coming up on Saturday the 6th of September and there are a choice of 3 courses...half (13.1 miles), full (26.2 miles) and ultra (50 miles).

This is the dry fit top that will be given out at the finish line...

The full and ultra will have different colours....see below. The main advantage of this particular top compared to others is the fact that it's long sleeved. The majority of dry fit tops given out at races are short sleeved which tend to be fine if worn in mild weather. In the middle of winter when it's a few degrees above zero, the long sleeve top comes into it's own. If you're out for a long run in cold weather, your arms generally aren't doing much work and your hands can get very cold. I know myself that during the Winter and Spring, all my long sleeve tops are in constant use whereas I have an assortment of short sleeve ones buried away in a drawer that I have never worn.

As a location, the whole Dingle peninsula is a stunning area especially for anyone who wants to make a weekend away out of it. One of the best websites to find out about local attractions and where to stay is http://www.dingle-peninsula.ie/index.html

You can find out more about entries on the race website... http://www.dinglemarathon.ie/
