Due to some flooding on the course near the coast, the marathon in Clonakilty was cancelled this year. The half-marathon and 10k however though did go ahead with just over 1400 runners crossing the finish line.
When you consider that it was wet and windy and that half of the 5k parkruns in Cork were cancelled on the same day, 1400 plus runners is a big turnout for an event in West Cork. If the weather was fine then it would have been obviously larger.
A few days ago I posed the question if €50 for a 10k race was too expensive... link here
Well, there were 525 finishers in the Clonakilty 10k so perhaps €50 isn't too expensive despite what many people think.
The one thing I noted about the 10k results is that only 20 runners ran under 45 minutes on what is a reasonably good course. It suggests that the faster club runners gave this one a skip but there were many more runners who were more than happy to enter.

If people are silly enough to pay 50 euro for a 10k race then races like this will keep going. People complain about the cost of living but you have to wonder. The organisers must be laughing up their sleeves
ReplyDeleteA lap of a muddy field at the very end of the half marathon. Disgusting
ReplyDeleteNearly cried when we had to run around the field at the end of the half. I didn’t sign up for a cross country run, it was absolutely soul destroying
ReplyDeleteMost runners with a sub 45min 10k time gave it a miss because they have a brain! I mean why would you pay 50 euros for 10k,you need your head tested!
ReplyDeleteThe 10k course was almost 400m over distance. The first two finishers in the 10k didn't complete the muddy field lap .
ReplyDeleteThrough no fault of theirs as they didnt realise it. No signs no direction. Plus 1 and 2 were miles clear so it wouldnt have made any difference to the placings. Fair play to them i say
DeleteThat lap of honor was crushing when you had the momentum coming off the road and very slippery in vaporflys.my watch read 13.3 miles also so don’t think there was any need for it
ReplyDeleteThe council gave the flooded part the all clear by Friday and informed the organisers. They ignored this
ReplyDeleteThe council cleared the flooding by Friday morn and gave it the all clear
ReplyDeleteAs someone doing the half marathon as his first half marathon in six years after losing three stones weight, I wasn't particularly happy about having to run through muck for the last stretch. It added minutes onto my time and stopped me breaking 3 hours not exactly Eliud Kipchoge it's true, but it would have been a big thing for me after a prolonged break from running. That said, I have to defend the organisers from some of the comments here . I guess I missed the bit where people were forced at gunpoint to pay 50 euro for a 10 k. You don't want to pay it, don't pay it. As for the full marathon, I remember years ago they were criticised for waiting until the day before the marathon for postponing it, now they are told it was too soon. I guarantee you that no one in that committee said to themselves, "How can we cause the most inconvenience to the most people possible. Decisions are made under pressure, they will suit some people, not others. I'm biased perhaps, because this race was a big deal to me, with it being my dad's anniversary, running it for a local cancer charity and it being my home town, but I will always remember this race. Obviously criticism is totally valid, but let's bakso acknowledge the hard work that went into putting this event on.
ReplyDelete* Also, not Bakso
DeleteI think Donal the issue here with the marathon was that it was put on a route that was known to be subject to flooding, the organisers if they looked at the weather on Monday knew this was going to happen and it also appears the council had it cleared by Friday. V poor form and not the first time. Welldone on your run. Keep at it.
DeleteAnyone know why the association with The Park Hotel went away? Hopefully some changes incoming next year, doing a lap of the parkrun can't be a great way to finish a race.
ReplyDeleteThey should pack it in. Waterford AC half mara superb
Delete10k runner here but not by choice!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't totally impressed with the way the cancellation was handled and wont be running clon again. I knew I'd be going on to run the full mara distance as a training run during the week instead, that I wouldn't be deferring my entry and didnt want to completely lose out on an entry fee so 10k made better sense on the day. I wouldn't pay 50e to run that distance ever! Glad I took this decision though as the mud field/parkrun at the end would be a very disappointing way to finish a very first full, as would having to run 300m over the actual distance.
The xc section puts me off running clon again too. Its a shame this section wasn't clearly outlined on signing up. I'm sure I'm not the only one who turned up expecting it all to be all road and if people had advance notice they could make an informed choice to run in the event or not -and organisers wouldn't hear as many complaints about the ending!
I think the criticism against the run (in part) is warranted and should be expected. Cancelling a race is fair enough if the conditions call for it (as it did thur eve for clon) however automatically transferring and thinking everyone would then run the half without highlighting the deferral option was always going to get peoples backs up. Throw in disappointment and its a perfect storm waiting to happen! Had they included the images, reasons they couldn't run the half route x2 and deferral options in the original email like they posted online, I think it would have saved a lot of confusion and hassle on both sides. I think the inclusion of emoji on the email, while well intended, probably didn't help the situation either and made it seem like it was making light of a disappointing and big enough decision- again, just my 2cents!
Having those in the winning positions not complete the full course, regardless of it impacting on placement or not, isn't fair on any of the runners and does make a difference as times are for 2 different distances....who REALLY won???!!! (I'm not criticising runners/winners btw, they just followed the directions given on the day) For the runners at the back of the field or expecting an accurately measured course, those extra 300m can and in some cases did make a huge difference to finishing times and pbs so, YES! Running that section (or not!) does make a difference!
On a positive, the road section of the 10k was a lovely course and a very enjoyable run up to that last lap!
Overall, I wasn't overly impressed by how the run was organised and run so won't be back but again, just MY opinion and I appreciate many others think and feel differently about it too.
