Guest Post : AOIFE COOKE’S 55:17 AT MALLOW...by John Walshe
Following on from the Mallow 10 mile road race last Sunday, John Walshe reflects on Aoife Cooke's remarkable winning time of 55m 17s.
AOIFE COOKE’S 55:17 AT MALLOW
Regarding Aoife Cooke’s time of 55:17 for 10 miles at Mallow last Sunday, this makes her the second fastest Cork woman (after Sonia O’Sullivan) on the all-time list.
The fastest time in the country in 2018 was 56:47, which Aoife equalled in tough conditions at Duhallow on March 10th. So to run a minute-and-half faster two weeks later amounts to a superb performance.
Lizzie Lee’s average pace in her half-marathon best of 73:19 in Barcelona last year equates to a time of around 55:55 for 10 miles, although in the National Half-Marathon of 2015 in the Phoenix Park – which she won in 73:27 – Lee went though 10 miles 55:40.
In the history of the Ballycotton ‘10’, just one woman – Maria McCambridge – ran faster than 55:17. It should be noted, however, that she did it on three occasions - 54:20 (2015), 54:48 (2012), and 55:01 (2013).
Although the 10-mile distance is not as prevalent in the UK as in the past, only three women (Eilish McColgan, Alyson Dixon and Steph Twell) ran faster than Cooke’s time in all of last year.
And finally to put it all into perspective – the fastest Irish woman over 10 miles is Sonia O’Sullivan who ran 51:00 at the Great South Run back in 2002. This was a world best at the time and still remains as the tenth fastest on the world all-time list.

Info for the 2019 Mallow 10 mile road race - Sun 24th March
The big race this weekend is of course the Mallow 10 mile on Sunday the 24th of March.
Weather forecast.....It looks as if Sunday should be dry day with some sunshine. The temperature should be around 10 deg C but that may feel much warmer in places.
There will be a light breeze from the North-West which is likely to keep things a bit cool, especially in exposed areas. On the course, it is likely to be a headwind from 2 to 4 miles. From 4 to 6.5 miles, it will be a headwind as well but there will be some shelter from the hills to the north.
The most significant impact is that it will be behind the runners in the last 3 miles so it won't have much of a cooling effect. It is likely to feel very warm along this stretch.
If you are racing then nothing more than a singlet or a short sleeve dry fit top is recommended. Anyone wearing too much will pay for it in the later stages. If you feel slightly cold at the start line then that is the right amount of clothing to wear.
Mallow tops......This is the dry fit top for this year.
I have just updated the race website with all the latest info.

Cork City Council divided on plan to ban cars from Marina
Back in October of 2018, cars were banned from the Marina on a Sunday morning as an experiment so that people could use it as an amenity. Following the success of that project, the question raised was whether this should become a permanent feature?
According to an recent article in the Evening Echo, Cork City councillors are divided on the plan to pedestrianise the Marina. .
It does mention the following in the article..."Running groups have suggested that 5k runs could take place if the road was shut off to traffic on weekends."
This would suggest I assume the possibility of a 5k parkrun at 9:30am on a Saturday morning.
There may be some merit in the argument that the Marina is needed for cars at the peak traffic times on Monday to Friday as people try to get in and out of the city centre. On Saturday or Sunday, that is almost certainly not the case as there are plenty of alternative routes.
When the car ban was discussed previously in 2018, one Mayfield based councilor spoke out against it on the basis that old people liked to be driven up and down it as part of a spin on a Sunday afternoon!
I don't know how practical it is to just close it on the weekends but if it's possible, surely it's a logical first step?

Guest Post: MICK MOLLOY CELEBRATES HIS 81st BIRTHDAY... by John Walshe
In this guest post, John Walshe of Ballycotton writes about Mick Molloy who one of the best marathon runners in the country back in the 1970's. He also has the distinction of having set a new world record for 30 miles of 2h 44m 47s. That works out at about 5m 30s per mile pace for 30 miles!
MICK MOLLOY CELEBRATES HIS 81st BIRTHDAY
(By John Walshe)
This month sees one of Ireland’s legendary distance runners celebrating his 81st birthday. Mick Molloy was born on March 13th, 1938, and during the 1960s won three Irish marathon championships, along with titles at 10 miles, 15 miles and cross-country. He also represented his country in the marathon at both the 1968 Olympics and 1969 European Championships.
Molloy grew up beside Lough Corrib, four-and-a-half miles from Oughterard in County Galway. His first sporting involvement was with Gaelic Football but all that changed at the age of 18 when he ran his first cross-country race. In a full page feature in the Connacht Tribune last December, Molloy recalls that day: “My only mode of transport at the time was a bicycle and so after returning from Mass in Oughterard I headed to Dunmore (100 mile round trip) and lined up with 45 other runners, I finished in eight place.
Four years later, he won his first Galway senior cross-country over nine miles near Athenry. “I not only beat Willie Morris, the favourite, but won the race by over 300 yards,” he remembers. In 1966, on a wet and windy day at Dromoland Castle in Clare, he won the All-Ireland cross-country title and captained Galway to win the inter-county team event ahead of Cork.
Later the same year he transferred that winning form to the road with victory in the Irish Marathon at Banteer in 2:24:45. A second marathon title (2:22:52) followed two years later in his native Galway which qualified him for that year’s Olympic Games.
In the warm and altitude conditions of Mexico City, Molloy had to discard his shoes after 14 miles due to blisters but he gallantly carried on to finish 41st of the 74 starters in a time of 2:48:13. Despite the setback of a serious ankle injury he was able to retain his national marathon title (2:22:32) the following year of 1969 and went on to finish a creditable 13th in 2:28:38 at the European Marathon in Athens.
Five years later, in September 1974, Molloy won the prestigious Berchem marathon in Belgium, but not without drama: “I was leading the race at 15 miles when the official car turned down a side road for petrol and I followed; not understanding the language, I lost about a minute-and-a-half and by the time I got back on the correct road I was back in eight place.”
He eventually caught the leaders at 21 miles and went on to win by over two minutes in 2:18:41, a time he would marginally improve to 2:18:22 (which remained his fastest) when finishing 12th the following year at Kosice. This was less than a minute behind Waldemar Cierpinski who would go on to become dual Olympic champion at Montreal (1976) and Moscow (1980).

Running the Streets of Cork City Centre - Strava Style
Who would have thought you could run 15 miles just by running around the centre of Cork City? Well, that's just what Cork runner Brian Buckley did this morning when he ran on every single road in the city centre of Cork City.
The big ones are obvious but there are loads of small little roads and alleyways.

Athletics Ireland release club membership stats for Feb 2019
Athletics Ireland have just released the membership stats for clubs as of the end of February 2019. Link HERE
Note that at this time of year, the figures often just reflect how good clubs are at getting the renewals back in rather than their real size.
Once we get to about start of May, things will begin to settle down and we can see the relative size of each club.

IAAF announce high qualification standards for the 2020 Olympics
The IAAF have recently announced the qualification standards for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Based on this, it seems to suggest that most Irish athletes will fail to qualify.
An athlete can qualify for the 2020 Olympics in one of two ways: Achieve the entry standard OR qualify by their IAAF world ranking position.
According to the IAAF....“The process is designed to achieve about 50% of the target numbers for each event through entry standards and the remaining 50% through the IAAF world ranking system.”
The qualification periods are from January 1, 2019, to May 31, 2020, for the marathon and 50km race walk; from January 1, 2019, to June 29, 2020, for the 10,000m, 20km race walk and combined events; and from May 1, 2019, to June 29, 2020, for all other events.
Very high standard
The most obvious thing about the standards is just how tough they are in comparison to those for the Olympics in Rio.
For example, the qualification standard for Rio for the women's 3000m Steeplechase was 9m 45s. Kerry O'Flaherty, Michelle Finn and Sara Treacy ran 9:42 to 9:44 at a race in Letterkenny in July 2015 to qualify. The new standard is 9m 30s.
The new qualifying times for Tokyo for the women in the marathon is 2h 29m 30s. The standard for Rio was 2h 42m.
The time for the marathon men has gone from 2h 17m down to 2h 11m 30s.
Unless someone qualifies through the ranking system, it seems likely that there will be a very small Irish athletics team in Tokyo.

New parkrun signs for Ballincollig Regional Park
Due to the popularity of the ongoing weekly 5k parkrun in Ballincollig and a new Junior parkrun on the way, Cork County Council will be putting in these new signs in the Regional Park soon.
The lap markers should be particularly helpful for runners to gauge if they are ahead or behind previous runs.
Running events - Sat 9th and Sun 10th March 2019
In contrast to last weekend, everyone and anyone seems to be holding a race on the 10th of March. It might be something for race organisers to consider, the first weekend of March is pretty free of fixtures.
The weather forecast for the weekend is reasonable although the rain will never be too far away. At worst, it should amount to just passing showers.
As well as all the usual 5k parkruns on the Saturday, there are a few to choose from on Sunday.
The Crosshaven 10k race is full. In East Cork, there is a 4 miler in Killeagh. If you want to do a 10 miler then there is one in Newmarket or one up near Clonmel.

Membership of Cork athletic clubs is getting older
One of the most dramatic changes in the composition of athletic clubs in Cork and Ireland over the last few years has been the adult age profile.
Most members of the public would probably assume that adult members of athletic clubs are in their 20's and early 30's. The reality is the exact opposite with relatively few adults in their 20's and the vast majority aged between 35 and 50.
In terms of membership of an athletics club, a Senior is aged from 20 to 34 where as a Master is aged 35 and over.
The age profile of four large Cork clubs illustrates how the adult membership profile has gotten much older of late.
All four would be considered to be large clubs involved mainly in running and road races as opposed to the traditional track and field.
Over the last six years, the change has been dramatic as younger adults in their 20's are generally not attracted to running as a sport.
The membership of St Finbarr's AC typifies this. This club based in Cork City usually had a younger membership than most clubs and back as recently as 2014, roughly one third of its members were Seniors. As of the end of 2018, the club has the same age profile as the rest which is up around 90%.
Just to highlight how dramatic a change that is, consider that in 2014 one in three of its adult members were aged 34 or below. As of the end of 2018, that is now one in ten.
