Cork City Council divided on plan to ban cars from Marina

Back in October of 2018, cars were banned from the Marina on a Sunday morning as an experiment so that people could use it as an amenity. Following the success of that project, the question raised was whether this should become a permanent feature?

According to an recent article in the Evening Echo, Cork City councillors are divided on the plan to pedestrianise the Marina. .

It does mention the following in the article..."Running groups have suggested that 5k runs could take place if the road was shut off to traffic on weekends."

This would suggest I assume the possibility of a 5k parkrun at 9:30am on a Saturday morning.

There may be some merit in the argument that the Marina is needed for cars at the peak traffic times on Monday to Friday as people try to get in and out of the city centre. On Saturday or Sunday, that is almost certainly not the case as there are plenty of alternative routes.

When the car ban was discussed previously in 2018, one Mayfield based councilor spoke out against it on the basis that old people liked to be driven up and down it as part of a spin on a Sunday afternoon!

I don't know how practical it is to just close it on the weekends but if it's possible, surely it's a logical first step?
