The grant for Athletics Ireland athletes was well down this year at €184,000. In 2017, the total was €236k while it was €220k in 2016. A large part of this drop is due to the semi-retirement of Rob Heffernan and the loss of his €40,000 per annum grant.

As well as Rob losing his grant, Ciara Everard also loses her €12,000 grant and the men's relay team lose theirs. The other changes are Mark English dropping €4k to €16,000 and Brian Gregan getting a grant of €16,000.

Some stats for the 2018 Mallow 10 mile road race...

Following on from the 2018 Mallow 10 mile road race last Sunday, it's time to have a look at some stats!

First up, this is the breakdown by club of those that finished...

Last year, there were 20 clubs with 10 or more members. This year, it's 26. There were 7 clubs with 20 or more members last year while this year it's 9.

Almost 68% of the finishers are members of some type of club while just under 59% are actually members of an Athletics Ireland affiliated club.

Just over 1240 runners finished the race, almost exactly the same as last year.

In 2017, 46% of the finishers were women. That dropped this year to 43.4%.

In fact, the biggest drop in numbers seems to be younger women aged under 40.

As you can see from the chart above, the numbers for those aged 40 and above held up pretty well but those aged under 40 dropped.

For the men, the pattern is nearly the same with the decline in those aged under 40.

This follows a pattern for other races and club membership in that it shows that the average runner is getting older. The vast majority of adult members in athletic clubs are now what would be termed 'recreational runners' while the number of young adults actually involved in say track and field events is falling.

This is the breakdown of the finish times by gender in 5 minute increments.

The average woman was about 15 minutes slower than the average man which seems a lot, I would have expected something like a 10 minute difference for a 10 mile race. In fact, just 14 women broke 70 minutes which is pretty low considering that almost 540 women ran.

Overall, there are no big suprises in there, just a confirmation of existing trends. I'm not really sure why the number of younger adults is dropping. I'm assuming that it might be the fact that more people are now working compared to a few years back and younger adults are busier? Whatever the reason, that's the way things seem to be going at the moment.

Info for the 2018 Mallow 10 mile road race coming up on Sun 25th March 2018

Weather forecast......It looks like that it will be a bright sunny day for this years Mallow 10 mile road race. There may be some clouds but there should be plenty of sunshine as well.

There is a light breeze from the North-West which is likely to keep things a bit cool, especially in exposed areas. On the course, it is likely to be a headwind from 2 to 4 miles. From 4 to 6.5 miles, it will be a headwind as well but there will be some shelter from the hills to the north.

The most significant impact is that it will be behind the runners in the last 3 miles so it won't have much of a cooling effect. It is likely to feel very warm along this stretch.

If you are racing then nothing more than a singlet or a short sleeve dry fit top is recommended. Anyone wearing too much will pay for it in the later stages. If you feel slightly cold at the start line then that is the right amount of clothing to wear.

Togher AC get €4000 in County Council Grant

Cork County Council recently allocated over €225,000 to community groups, voluntary organisations, sporting groups and residents associations through the Ballincollig-Carrigaline Municipal District of Cork County Council.

Togher AC managed to secure a grant of €4000. The club has been a regular recipient of grants of this nature and it shows that there are sources of funding out there from local and national bodies.

It's worth mentioning however that Togher AC have their own premises which is often a requirement for some grants.

Clonmel voted best Half-Marathon in Munster in 2017

The Clonmel Half-Marathon was voted the best half in Munster in 2017 according to the poll which ended at the February. The runners up were Charleville and the Waterford Half in December.

Unlike shorter races, the 10 milers and the half-marathons attract runners from a much wider catchment area. The Clonmel Half-Marathon every August attracts a lot of runners now from Cork and has grown from strength to strength since that inaugural event back in 2010.

The 2017 event was actually won by two runners from Cork which just highlights how popular the race is now with Cork runners looking for a quality half-marathon at the start of the Autumn.

This years event will take place on 26th August 2018 at 10am.

Notice : MMRA 7km trail run on Claragh Mtn nr Millstreet - Sun 18th March 2018

The next event on the MMRA calendar is a 7km trail race near Millstreet in Cork. This is the sixth race in the Munster Mountain Running Association Winter-Spring League 2018.

It's probably one of easiest in terms of mountain runs and is a good introduction. It is however tougher than the usual trail races that take place in the various woods. In terms of hills races in Cork, this one could justifiably be called a classic as it has a long history.

One of the unusual aspects of the race is that it starts in the town of Millstreet. From there, you look up at Claragh and it's hard to imagine that you'll be doing a race that will take you to the summit and back. It's also hard to imagine that it is only 7kms but it is.

This 7km trail race is organised by the Munster Mountain Running Association and here is some info from them.....

Notice...Ballintotis 4 mile road race in East Cork - Thurs 19th Apr 2018

After a long winter of dark evenings, it's time to look ahead to the upcoming summer season of evening road races. In Cork, the tradition was been that the Ballintotis 4 mile opens the summer season of evening races and the Ballycotton 5 at the end of August used to bring it to a close.

This year, the Ballintotis 4 mile will be held on Thursday the 19th of April 2018 at 8pm. Last year, they  managed to attract almost 900 runners which is a huge number for an evening road race.

They will have timing mats at the start and finish line so everyone will get an accurate time.

248 turned out for this weeks 5k parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park on what was a damp wet morning which probably explains the drop in numbers. It was a big change from a week ago when it was cancelled due to all the snow that was out there.
