Just for comparison, the three Irish women in the 2012 Olympics in London were 66th, 68th &107th.
2:39:57 for Lizzie Lee |
Personal best of 2h 31m 22s for Fionnuala McCormack & 20th position |
Really good running by all three athletes considering the heat and humidity. They should all be very proud of themselves.
ReplyDeleteto be fair they were never going to threaten the leaders
ReplyDeleteNobody said they would. What is your point?
ReplyDeleteVery tough conditions for any athlete out on that marathon course today, even the Kenyans were feeling the heat & the humidity.Anyone who has ever run a marathon here in Ireland in hot conditions here knows exactly how tough it can be let alone in a country below the equator. All three ladies finished strongly & should be very proud of themselves. Well done.
ReplyDeleteSomebody is forgetting a Kenyan won in 2.24.04.
ReplyDeleteLee and Connolly ran around the times expected but thought Fionnualla McCormack would run faster. At least all three finished and hope the Irish men will do the same.
ReplyDeleteI imagine the performances of Irish track athletes would be considered disappointing. We have been struggling to even make it into finals these days.
ReplyDeleteLee and Connolly were probably at their limit and did well, but Mccormack can be world class at this distance, there is a toughness about her that few athletes have.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite shocking how bad Ireland is in track and field these days. Qualifying standards are generous yet in so many events we have no one. We have a small population but that is not a good enough excuse. One does not need to be on drugs to get the qualifying standard so that is no excuse either. We need more John Hartnetts, Marcus O'Sullivans, Liam O'Briens, Sonia O'Sullivans, Derval O'Rourkes and Donie Walshes. At least Robert Heffernan is of a good competitive standard but we should have so many more like him. It is unreal in times the emphasis on club membership within athletics here but lack of good performances barely gets a mention. Are some of us patting ourselves on the back too much when over a thousand people run let's say a half marathon yet no one gets near breaking 70 minutes.
