Race notice...Douglas 5k Run - Sat 23rd Mar 2013

Even though the new Tramore Valley Park is not yet open to the public, we can see that a number of events are going to be held there this year. Considering it's central location, ease of access and the fact that there is no traffic to be concerned about then it's likely to become even more popular.

A few weeks ago, there was the Operation Transformation 5k in the park and it attracted a huge number of people who ran, jogged and walked the route.

The next event to be held there is the Douglas 5k run. Organised by Douglas Lions Club in conjunction with Douglas Rugby Club, it is coming up on Saturday, the 23rd of March at 2:30pm.


The entrance fee is €10 and proceeds for the event goes towards Douglas Lions Club and the underage section of Douglas Rugby Club.

It is also being sponsored by Cork City Council.

As you can see from the map above, access to the park is from the South Link Link. The rough outline of the course is shown in green and is basically two 2.5 km loops.

    Why is athletics always being used as a fundraiser for a sport that has much more money. It being a "Timed run". Does that mean that it's a race with race results ?

    I am told that it will be a typical fun run / charity run type of event with results.

    Have to agree with the first post. It appears every GAA/ Rugby club in the land is now using athletics (via a road race) to raise funds.

    I have no problem supporting a race if it is for charity or if it has the backing of an athletics club (as the funds are re-invested in the sport).

    I also agree, various bodies are using the running boom to raise funds. For a while this seemed to have worked but runners are getting a bit tired of it now, every event involves digging into the pocket and as a result runners are beginning to be picky about what races they take part in.
    €10 for a 5k run around some reclaimed land is too much if you ask me.

    I don't see what the problem is. Nobody is telling you to run in this race. If you don't want to run it, don't go. We're spoilt for choice here in Cork so this whinging is a bit much. And I have no allegiance to any rugby club, I'm a runner.

    Has everyone misread the flyer or something.
    It says Douglas Lions Club, and also that the money is for local charities and the underage section of the rugby club.
    It is not solely for the Rugby...

    In relation to the comments already posted why all the negatively. I have no affiliation to the organisers but I will definitely be running on the day. I support all sports as the majority of people involved give their time solely for the enjoyment and to put something back into the community and possibly a sport that was good to them. I have been running for many years and to a good standard, does that give me the right to complain about other runners arriving at races they never ran before!! Just go race - or not!!

    Does the person who thinks that a tenner for a 5k run in a park is a bit shteep want it to be a 5k run on a mountain top instead ?
