The Cork BHAA John Buckley Sports 5k is the most popular race on the BHAA calendar and this year was no exception with 1048 finishers. While that is down a bit on the numbers for 2025, it's the second highest numbers for this race.

15% Discount...... John Buckley Sports gave out 15% discount to all finishers in the race. Use your race number and present it in the shop to avail of the 15% discount. It will apply to any purchases in their shop which is across from the Opera House in the heart of Cork City. Needless to say, the amount you save with the discount may well exceed the race entry so they are well worth getting. Note that the discount is not restricted to just one item. When you are using it, you can buy several products at the one time and get 15% off the lot.

The expiry date on the race number discount is the 31st of December 2026 so you have plenty of time to use it.

John Buckley Sports shop is across the river from the Opera House.

Addendum... It looks as if there was some issue with the course being too long this year. I checked the Strava account of someone who did the race this year and last year.

It does look as if the BHAA put the start line about 300m too far down the Marina. They admitted there was an issue on Facebook.

  1. Maybe it was just me but according to my watch that was definitely longer than 5k

    1. They have confirmed on Facebook "Yes, there were issues with the measurement this evening which will be reviewed to ensure it doesn't reoccur."

By my watch, and those of everyone I asked, there were a good 350+ metres extra. Looks like the start line was pushed back up the marina from where it was previous years, but nobody noticed as the kilometer markers for Km 1-4 were all the correct distance after the start line, leading to a mega long 5th kilometer!!

    4. Definitely ran long, my watch was 360m over, anyone else i spoke to was between 340m and 370m. It's pretty bad to be that far over for a 5k, one thing if it was a fun run but it's a big race that some people pick out as their one to try get a pb

  7. How do they get distance so wrong. Not like it’s a course with lots of twists and turns. and not the first BHAA race down there with race distance off

It's a 5 euro race. We are so lucky in Cork to have a fantastic BHAA and each company does a great job organising these events. It didn't rain, people are lovely. Isn't it great that we are all healthy and able to run!

    1. Agreed. And sure look, we got 5.4 km for the price of 5.

  9. Lots of people giving out about the distance, if ye don't like it go pay €20-30 elsewhere, ye are getting a bargain and ye'll save a lot more than yer race entry with the JB discount.

The BHAA organise race after race year in year out and don't get half enough credit for what they do.

  10. Easy to see the mistake - they started at the 2022 start, when the finish was next to Atlantic pond. They had to push the start back that year to make up the stretch from the pond to the red sheds. The extra was therefore that stretch up from Atlantic pond to the red sheds finish. Unfortunate but it was a combination of the 2022 start and the finish which wasn’t used that year.

  11. Nothing to do with how well it is organized or that it only costs 5eur, no questions about that and thank you to all the volunteers but on a 5k course, having to run an extra 350m is not acceptable, just easy to measure it, just cycle the course with a GPS watch. One of the biggest 5k races in the country, people are chasing pbs!

  12. The BHAA races are run by volunteers, the entry fee is as good as nothing, and there's great prizes. We shouldn't mind if there's the odd issue like this, the running scene in Cork would be much worse without the BHAA.

  13. People keep going on about the price. If companies didn’t fund the races then they wouldn’t be able to do it for that price. And the membership fee as well. So thank the companies. Also a race like last night would have a huge number of people who paid 10 euro as temp reg. You would see a lot of 5ks for 10 euro (or free at a parkrun) and the distance will be correct. This race in particular attracts a lot of people outside of Cork and just because it’s BHAA it shouldn’t be exempt from negative feedback.

And not everyone would shop in the John Buckley so the voucher shouldn’t again make it ok for the distance to be so wrong

  14. I disagree with the comments about the fact we should be happy as it's only €5, this is not a good enough, for a race that brings the bhaa alot of money they let these mistakes happen way to much. Late starts, long/short courses isn't good enough for an race. Really need to get their act together.

  15. It was a great event and I really enjoyed it and a big thank you to all the organisers and volunteers. Hope to do it again next year. Wasn't put out at all by the extra length.

  16. Participants need to get their act together. Races start late as people show up late to register. If the races started on time these same people would be complaining that the race started without them.

  17. If it was free or a charity race I'd have the same complaint. I paid €10 for a chip timed race, to validate the fitness I was seeing at parkruns and at my training, because chip time is the only time when it comes to official or PBs. And there was an area near the very end that was a safety hazard. Lots of loose stone tiles with mud under that should have had a mat across them, and a bollard in the middle of the same area of tiles, followed by big puddles. That point should have been matted off. Being several hundred metres too long is not forgivable because they are "volunteers". The only reason I paid is for the chip time validity that you can't get from parkrun or similar. What did I pay for, as a non-member and why should I return to BHAA races? It was my first experience and I was left with a sour taste in my mouth. Also have not received a chip time and the site only lists gun times so I don't even know what my time was yet for this 5 and a bit kilometre race......

  18. Just to say that I knew last night that there would be a lot of moaning. I know it was a bit of a pain but still really enjoyed it. Thanks to all the volunteers, i just thought if it as a free extra 7%. These things happen, thanks again, see ye next year. Ps, take 350m off next years and we can balance the two.
